    Noah Lyles Coach is obviously very, very astute and concentrates on building strength during the early part of the season. Then "tayloring" or sharpening the athlete as they build towards a Peak performance period, just prior to which ever Championships they are aiming for. Noah even stated that he could go faster in training than what the session required but the Coach cautioned him and held him back, explaining that extreme, full out exertion would have damaged his planned progression towards a peak period. This excellent type of controlled training and racing is something that most College level Coaches ignore as they are really only interested in getting as many points out of the runner as they can in Meets. That's why many College athletes that perform close to their PB's at the beginning of the season (far too early) often don't really progress much by the end of the season during Championship races.

    That 19.67 (0.3) means Lyles only needs 2 more sub 20s clockings to surpass Bolt's total of 34! Blows my mind that 27yr old Zharnel Hughes who ran 20.02 (-0.1) as a 20yr old to finish 5th in the '15 WC 200m Final still hasn't broken 20s! His 20.07 (-0.3) to win the European Champs 200m Final last year is the closest he's been in 8yrs! Should've been a 19.8 guy by now at a minimum like Jereem Richards. Tbf to him, he had a number of injuries that kept him from training for/running the 200m as much as he used to from around 2018 onwards. Plus, he's unlucky in that his Top 3 times of 20.02 (-0.1), 20.05 (-1.4) & 20.07 (-0.3) were run into headwinds, otherwise they would all have been sub 20s clockings. I imagine if it was closer to the +2.0m/s allowable time it'd be close to 19.0 flat, and that would be absolutely untouchable. You can see Bolt struggling to maintain his speed in the dying stages of the race as his stamina runs out. I think Lyles in the right conditions in the next 1-2 years can take this record.

    There's no reason to think Lyles can't go below 19.19. He's JUST entering his prime at 25. With his physiology, long legs and stride but only 5'11'', and massive top end speed, and mentality there's no reason he doesn't run below 19.3 this season. If you're with .05 of a WR in a sprint there's literally no reason you can't run through that WR. None. Idk if he does it this or next year but he's doing it. For ME, the question is how fast can Fred Kerley run the 200? If he can dip below 19.5 this year with a lot in the tank, he may just be able to go faster. Idk tho. He really does not like the turn. Going to be interesting.

Hope he proves me wrong though just like Shacarri has been doing thus far (yet to do it on big stage). I'm also assuming Bolt has the all-time record in sub 20 second 200s curious to see where Lyles is as I believe he will retire with that record and put it out of reach for quite some time.

  • @chomalen
    @chomalen Před rokem

    His coach is on point and has the correct understanding.
    That training target below your current potential with a gradual close towards peak personal ability is the way to go. There is almost no point in forcing a teenage prodigy to push to their maximum ability at that age (for example). It is much more holistic and goal-oriented to sub-maximally develop and prime the machinery for that end-point to be attained when the physical form and neurodevelopment would support such an outcome. Sprinters usually achieve this between their mid-20s to early 30s. Prior to this, it serves near to no purpose to train and function close to your maximal output and inherently increases the risk of injury that would almost certainly reduce the upper limit of potential ability. Any Achilles' tendon rupture or hamstring tear would almost certainly reduce the output and result (sprint times, peak velocity) that could have been delivered otherwise.
    Often the hardest part is the psychological and mental reframing that is required in individuals who are so highly driven in such a pursuit. Sometimes, it can be to their detriment.
