By the time I was forced to upgrade my PC, 2000 came out. The most trouble I had was game compatibility early on. So stable, and that recover to earlier working config option was gold. I didn’t install another OS on my desktop until 2008.

Windows 2000 was awesome. When I was old enough to get my own PC I got a used one with a fresh install of 2000. I think our family PC was running XP home at the time and we had an older 98 and 3.11 machine too.
2000 Was awesome since it ran basically everything that XP did but consumed less resources. All my games worked on it and I definitely preferred using it over the family XP machine. Now that I’m older I realize it was probably just the low resource usage of 2000 plus the fact that the early Pentium 4s were pretty terrible. My 2000 machine was rocking a pentium 3 that smoked the Pentium 4 in the family PC. Definitely some nostalgia factor but still, it was the first OS I truly got to tinker around with since it was on my own PC.

I kinda missed the ball with these. lol My first ever computer was a hand-me-down that had Windows Me on it. And unfortunately, I do remember having instability and crashing issues. It was only after I had my first DIY computer in 2011 that had Windows 7 on it. And since then, my experiences with Windows have been rock solid since then.

Got it the day it went retail. It's the last version with the OS/2 subsystem. It was so delayed in the deathmarch that was NT 5.0. By the time 2000 shipped Cairo had failed (yet again) and the updates, and option pack + IE's for NT 4 was just too much. 2000 had all the COM objects which took forever to register during install but changed the way you could program the OS, however .Net made it all more usable. In the professional world it's the first DDNS/Active Directory version and it was great for massive networks! Sadly all the RISC CPU's didn't make the cut, the Alpha64 wasn't public and there was that one preview for Itanium.. It's the last significant 32bit version of NT for me, afterwards with XP64 & 2003 Itanium/x64 it was all 64bit for me onwards.

I was in a mixed hardware environment where we also used Sun hardware, but everyone preferred the Windows workstations.

Strange enough I still have RiscOS running, but now on the Raspberry Pi 400 (and even faster than on the original Acorn RiscPC hardware). Win 2k was a very good and stable OS (at least for SP4 that I mostly used). I even used Win2k instead XP until SP3 came out for XP. It had a very small memory usage (I managed to run it on a 128M P2@233 and it used around 48M), it was stable (did I mentioned that?) and for games - being dos games or windows games - it was great. I guess the max directX supported was DX7 or DX8 but for most games it was just enough. I never run into a game that did not ran on Win2k while I used it. Also, driver wise, it was very compatible with most of the old and new hardware, and as a bonus, many XP drivers were suported and installed just fine on Win2k. I upgraded my old NT4 server to Win2k Server and I used it until the hardware died. As a daily driver, it had the best from Win9x and NT worlds.
Fun fact, the path to upgrade Win9x was Win98->WinME->Win2k or Win98->Win2k. Win2k did not upgraded to WinME even on a FAT32 HDD partition, because it was considerred a major version than WinME.

its direct x 9.0c officially i think though a lot were that era. Not certain if the XP mod to get fake DX10 to trick some games into working on it would work on 2k as well but it'd be a interesting experiment. You'd still be stuck with a 2 TB hdd limit unless someone has modded XP/vista support into that part of 2k (XP is 3 tb, not certain if Vista, 7, 8.1 have a limit other than what the motherboard would have)

@@patg108 Officially forXP max DX version was indeed DX9.0c, altough I remember hearing about some unofficial DX10 mods for XP that I never used (bu the time I needed DX10 for a game, I already ran Win7). Yes, DX9 installs well on Win2k and I am sure because I installed and used DX9 games on Win98SE. About HDD size, as long as the partition type is MBR, I think that any size will be recognized up to 2TB. I have few 5TB Seagate portable HDDs that are not recognized under XP so I guess not under Win2k also, they are partitioned as GPT. While I have many old HDDs in good condition, I like to use them in my retro builds, most of them are from 60G to 160G and that is What I mostly used to install Win2k,XP, Vista or 7; for Win9x I mostly use HDDs from 20G to 40G as boot disk, formatted FAT32 and I never had any problems booting or accessin the filesystem .

And like i said XP's partition type (unless a mod exists to extend it past 3 TB that's the limit)
They'd have to be NTFS or Fat32 for 2k/XP (well i think fat16 would also work technically)
XP might take more than 3 TB if the partitions are 3 TB or less

But the point of the suggestion is how far can 2k be modded? How far can it go? Even to the point of modding the mods and XP drivers to work on 2k?
And also after all that's done how well can it handle the modern web and more modern games than it normally could? (meaning XP to vista era or early 7 era perhaps games)

Should install the server version on a core2duo (high end) or a i3/i5/i7 and have fun with it. To see how it fares with modernish processors and tasks, Then go through 3rd party mods to show how it still handles things. And i know it doesn't support hyperthreading (but it will see it as another cpu when changed) And since it supports multiple cpus (at least the server versions) it should be interesting to see how it handles 4 or more cores
Might well think you're using a board with 4 processors or more. There's also gpus that are far newer than it but still have support (titan series or the 900 series i think had support for 2k, at least XP)
And there is a program that allows it to run XP (i think there's one that allows XP to run vista as well, not certain if it goes further than that). but it'd be interesting to do that, give it lots of ram (2k doe shave a 64 bit version as does NT). Also the option of a antivirus (old version that can still get the modern updates, avg i think)
Would be fun for a quirky build to see how 2k still handles modern times. There'd probably be more esp with the XP hack app. And possibly modifying XP drivers to work on 2k too (if they don't already).
It'd then also be interesting to see how it still handles things like youtube and web browsing
