    When Netflix announced that they would be making a Gilmore Girls revival, fans were ecstatic and while there were many things to love about it, there were also a lot of things we could have done without. In this countdown, we’re taking a look at the to 10 Things We Hated About Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life! For one, the show ended with a bunch of loose ends. We left not knowing who the father of Rory’s baby is, left wondering if Paris and Doyle will get back together and where do Luke and Lorelai stand on having a baby?

      Tammy I feel like that was done on purpose though... Rory was always praised on how grown up and mature she was as a teenager, it serves that she would have taken that to heart a lot and stayed at that "mature" mindset, making it easy for her peers to outgrow her in return. It also adds in a little bit of the "child prodigy" phenomenon, where extremely smart children and teenagers tend to grow up to become mediocre adults.
      It fits that the adult Rory is lost and mixed up and didn't live up to her full potential; she was so smart as a teenager that she never really picked a direction and stuck to it. She was told she could do anything and kind of cracked under the pressure of that. Now she's scrambling to fix her life and decide what she really wants to do, one mistake after another.

    It struck me within the first five minutes that Rory was 32, the same age as her mother in the first episode in the first season. Her mother, who at age 32, had single handedly raised a 16 year old child accepted to a prestigious private academy, owned her own home, ran an entire business and planning to start her own inn, was in college at night also, was heavily involved and respected in her community, and even had a far more respectable love life complete with commitment and decent men who committed to her too. I actually thought Lorelai’s reaction to Rory wanting to write a memoir about them was in character. She’s always been touchy about her upbringing and I can’t imagine her wanting that in black and white. Rory had the nerve to throw a tantrum when she didn’t even bother to consider Lorelai’s feelings. There were a few times in the original show where Rory ignored her Mother’s wishes when it came to her parents. This isn’t surprising because Rory has always been a bit spoiled and her Mother rarely says no or objects to what she wants. The book was advice she took from Jess who has a history of being careless with people’s feelings, including Rory’s. She’s been having a hard time finding work and she found no issue using her Mother’s story to make a buck. She can’t write a memoir without including Lorelai because there would be no story. Rory’s life is not really memorable; she hasn’t had a life yet.

She should've focused on her own side of it as Lorelai said but then again I actually thought Lorelai would be flattered and so happy that her daughter praises her so much that she'd want to write her story of triumph! I found it shockingly arrogant that she was offended and like... Way narcissistic in the fear of exposure. She needs to stop hiding and being worried what her parents think and just live.

      That's exactly it, Rory felt entitled to tell Lorelai's story as her own. Plus with so many other people that'd be referenced Lorelai was completely right to be upset and not want that in an actual book form. Even the way she's structured the story to start with Lorelai leaving her parents says it all.
      Throughout the show, the writers have hinted at Rory kinda wanting to be Lorelai or even thinking she is Lorelai. So Lorelai's experiences are hers. Rory isn't a complete person on her own, and she's regressed completely. It may not be a happy ending but I like that the writer didn't shy away from showing that actually Rory is a bit weak, book smart but not the smartest, and very indecisive.

Sutton Foster and Christian Borle are ALWAYS a welcome addition to anything, but the writers should have given them something better to work with (and less screen time tbh, we wanted to spend as much time as possible wit our beloved characters)

She stole Richard away from his then-fiancée, Pennilyn Lott, and Richard's mother HATES her with a passion. Emily is such a perfectionist, and always gets her way. My favorite thing about watching Emily is when she starts opening up and showing vulnerability, but she realizes it, and snaps back into boss-bitch-mode. She's manipulative, demanding, controlling, and doesn't let anyone phase her. I'd say she's the best part of the revival who TRULY received a perfect closed chapter.

There are some slight differences, i.e. Logan actually knows how to be successful and actually does have money, and Jess--well, we don't know much about Jess at this point, but he is more inline with Rory compared to Luke and Lorelai's relationship...and Rory will have the priviledge of a mom who she has a good relationship with compared to Emily and Lorelai's relationship...but I supposed it is possible for history to repeat, regardless.

He is more mature & wiser now. I love that he respects Luke more & he cares more about what Rory wants. In the earlier seasons, he was bratty, disrespectful, impulsive & only cared about his own needs. He wanted Rory to drop out of Yale & run away with him, not caring that she would be leaving behind her own dreams & her mom. She's always been so head on with her decisions and kind of selfish. In the later season she turned away internships and jobs for the one internship she swore she was going to get. She was bound to fail in life because she never knew how to except the second best. Ever. It was not unlike her character to have a one night stand either. Girls like Rory who are stuck in relationships their whole life tend to lose themselves romantically. Even tho I *hated* season 7 and had a hard time watching it I do love the final, I thought it was soooo sweet to throw Rory a goodbye party, having every single person who cares about her (minus her had bc that douche only cares about her when it's convenient) wish her luck and tell her how happy and proud they are of her (also Luke being the sweetest guy ever). Sadly I was really disappointed with the revival, I thought it was going to be about Rory being pregnant and having to deal with all of that but with the help of her mom (in contrast with Lorelai's situation) idk, kinda bummed out tbh

    I hate that the writers treated like FOOLS, Rory's "brokenness" didn't make sense. Christopher is insanely rich (to the point where he's mentioned he doesn't know what to do with it many times). Plus, if Richard left Luke some money imagine what he left Rory. I hate that they didn't acknowledge any of this. Rory probably has access to millions and the fact she considered herself homeless enough to move back to SH instead of getting her own place? Even the way they referenced her apartment in Brooklyn. There was also the scene in S7 where Richard & Emily were considering getting an apartment on the Upper East Side.. Rory may not have been successful by any means but I'd still count her as filthy rich.

    The biggest thing I did not like about the revival was Logan's story. He was completely in love with Rory and in Season 7 you really saw him grow up from an entitled boy to a more responsible man. He broke away from his father and the business and set out on his own. He never would have been engaged to someone he didn't love and have Rory on the side. He would not have worked for his father's company. ASP just made him into an asshole to make Jess look better, and that's not fair. I know she didn't write Season 7, but she should have paid more attention to what happened.

    I think the question of Rory's lack of professionalism was actually answered very very well in the show. More than once Rory was told by her mother that she was used to everything falling in her lap. While Rory didn't let this go to her head as a teenager and college student, if things continued to work out this way for the next 9 years-especially with things like her New Yorker article-then it kinda makes sense that Rory might start to think a little more highly of herself. Furthermore, it was already well established from the beginning that she only wanted one job and wasn't taking anyone else very seriously, and this ties into her general arrogance in the revival. In general, I think it was well set up. You can hate it, but it still certainly makes sense.

    • @girlwhomustnotbenamed4139
      @girlwhomustnotbenamed4139 Před 3 lety +9

      I get what you're saying but to me it still doesn't make sense. Rory might have been unfamiliar with academic failure which makes it difficult to handle when it happens but she had always been incredibly overprepared for everything, down to the last random school test. She even started to get less idealistic in the 7th season of the original series after Logan's dad told her she didn't have it. She stopped catastrophising one person's negative opinion and coped well as a journalist and editor at Yale. The fact that after spending 9 years in an admittedly competitive profession where she has even had some success she would be totally unprepared for that Condé Nast interview is incomprehensible. I get they tried to write Rory as less than perfect but she was just fundamentally inconsistent with the person we saw grow up in the original series. Not to mention the way she acted in her private life.
      I think the writers had no idea what to do with her, even though there was so much to work with. They could have made her react totally differently to the same situations and it would've been interesting to follow her development. This way when she says "I suck" at the end, I couldn't but agree with her.

    • @apolloscrow3686
      @apolloscrow3686 Před 2 lety +3

      I think you’re right, but it would have been nice to see an arc in that case. Rory really doesn’t evolve at all, doesn’t even seem to get any moments of clarity. She’s like “poor me, no one will hand me a job and my love life’s a mess (while I sleep with an almost-married man, have one night stands, and string along a decent guy for two years while disrespecting him behind his back).”
      It would have been better to have the messiness and flaws in the first three installments and then have some sort of satisfying development in the fourth. It’s like the Palladinos were still writing for a weekly series, but that’s not what this needed to be. It needed to be self-contained while recapturing some old magic, and I think it fell way short.

I think his death impacted her and she's flailing without her guidepost. As much as her mom means to her, her grandfather was always the beacon she followed. He always supported her. Rory is lost without him. Emily grew and was able to learn to live without him, but never forgetting him. That's why Rory chooses to write in her grandfathers study. she needs him.
