Arizona Shed Hunting: Backcountry Elk Shed Hunt

- My friend Ken and I hiked in about 4 miles and set up camp to hit some elk country we’ve been e-scouting for a while. I managed to pick up 5 elk browns and we picked up a bunch of chalk elk sheds. We picked up a few nice sets and I found 2 brown sets and a single. We found over 65 antlers and hauled most of them to camp, but could only pack out the browns and our best ones back to the trucks.

Finding that huge, match set early in the trip certainly gives you high hope for multiple, big browns. As MC said, that set alone made it a successful trip. Speaking of MC, I didn't know you knew him, nor that he shed hunted in AZ (?).
Yeah, I know him. It wasn’t planned, just ran into him in AZ last year. All the other state closures don’t help AZ or NM.

We hiked in on Weds afternoon, I took 2 days off to do this trip. 3 full days of hiking. Lots of old chalky sheds.

He's a nice unbroken bull. Lots of heavy dense antlers this year. 3 of the sheds on this trip weighed 12 lbs, that is pretty rare.
Aw shucks I was really looking forward to a home decor and more vid. I guess I’ll have to go to tiny house nation to find the shed that fits me and my lifestyle.

No, all the miles I put in, I’ve only ran into 3 rattle snakes in 7 years out hiking. I see more on the roads driving but not in the mountains.

Yep, the other state's closures have really hurt AZ. I would venture to bet that AZ will follow suit just to keep the out of state guys from overwhelming AZ and NM next year.

All that finds on the wmat rez because state side bulls doesn't get big like that so I'm sure it's towards 300 road or along the young road

I wear prescription Oakley glasses. Martin actually took a cholla cactus to the face on this same weekend. He wasn’t wearing glasses either, but he should be.
Sweet brown set, I really like that you aren’t some drama queen when you pick them up. So many shed hunters act like damn liberal drama drag queens when they pick them up. Thanks for acting like a man.

He’s only 361”. Looks a lot bigger than that. Just has short beams. He’s super heavy though.

Pretty short. Right side is only 49” and the left side is 52”.

@@copperstatetucsondispatch they are the Peax brand. Yes, but one of the straps only lasted 6 weeks of shed hunting (weekends only). I have like them though.
