    Norway is by far one of my favorite places to go, Specifically the Lofoten area. Here are a some of the images I captured using the Pentax Spotmatic and the Super Takumar Lens system. The Spotmatic is a pretty inexpensive body but the lens options available for the M42 System are fantastic.

    The spotmatic is probably the best 35mm camera ever made. From personal experience the build quality is S tier. This camera is beautifully simple. When you pick it up you can just tell it was built to last. Compared to most 35mm cameras it feels far more premium. The best and worst thing about the spotmatic is it’s m42 mount. Yes it’s small but the lenses that you can attach are absolutely legendary (specially the 50mm 1.4). This camera can be very simple but I personally don’t think you need all those “features” to get great results. Plus the shutter sound and overall aesthetic is 🤌🏻

      @graham_white  Před rokem +1

      Agreed. I honestly still don't know if the meter works in any of my Nikon or spotmatics simply becuase I don't use it unless its a body that requires batteries to operate. I do get a bit annoyed swapping lenses with the m43 since its not as quick and easy but yes the glass is fantastic and the body very reliable and capable.

      I use a Minolta light meter with my Spotmatic SP2. I recently installed new light seals in the camera. I mainly bought it for the lenses that came with it 35mm3.5, 50mm1.4 & 135mm3.5

    Can never tire of hearing about older 35mm cameras, especially the classic Pentax Spotmatic. This camera made its formal debut in 1964, same year Tokyo hosted the Olympic Games. It was a fantastic opportunity for Asahi Pentac to market its new camera to the world. There are anecdotal stories of Pentax Spotmatic being sold to visitors and film kiosks located in the Olympic Village, but have found no posts of the 1964 Olympic Games shot w a Pentax. Do you know of links and sources for Pentax photos of the Games? As for stuck shutters and film advance, gotta believe it is due to oxidized lubricants used at the time. Now lubricants are more commomly synthetic and resistant to oxidizing and getting gummy. I own a Pentax Spotmatic SPII with a Takumar 50mm f 1.4 and love how it performs, having invested in a clean, lube & adjust too. Keep posting and encouraging us shooters. ❤❤😊

    I gave your ratings of the Pentax Spotmatic more thought, and I don’t think it is fair or accurate. The Pentax Spotmatic was first introduced in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and it took off. It reached its peak development about 1972, so it isn’t accurate to rate the Pentax for lacking features that came out much later in other cameras. You have to rate a camera body for the year & vintage that it is, and not say it is lacking some feature that you find in later cameras. The Pentax Spotmatic takes superb photos.

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  Před 3 lety

      It is a great camera, my questions about its build quality are in fact my own. Any camera will work better after a CLA so that doesn't really mean anything. me personally, most of the bodies I come across are in poor working order. That could be due to auger other things. but I will say I hardly ever come across a Nikon F that isn't working. There is no way to track these kinds of things anymore since they aren't produced etc. so it could just be my region, or personal luck. none the less, I am giving my own input neither of us can say for a fact one way or the other at this point. Also It isn't really isn't inaccurate to say it lacks features.... because like you said it does. If I compared each camera only to cameras of its identical time period, it would be useless to most modern shooters. some people need more features than others as intro or beginner shooters. I personally prefer the spotmatic over a lot of other options with a plethora of features. someone just starting isn't going to say "I want a camera from the 60s with the most features" they will say "I need a camera that has more features cause I am just starting out." lets keep it simple for now.

    I found a Spotmatic SPII in pristine shape but non functioning meter for $15. Forced myself to learn exposure without metering and now I honestly like this camera more than my nikon F3 since the weight and ergonomics feel perfect in my hand. The silver version has a very nice satin finish that I haven't seen on other cameras. Beautiful shots btw, would love to visit norway!

    Really interesting photo trip to Norway. Colorful pictures. Wonder if the cold Temps affected the shutter function or accuracy. Have used Pentax for awhile and problems are mainly due to age and dried lubricants. Also older lubricants vs those used today were petroleum based vs synthetic which is less vulnerable to oxidation. Pentax makes a superb cam, considering the Era it was built for. Still love my Spotmatic SPII. Nice to see others use this cam.

      Thanks Norman! I was also wondering if I would have any issues with slow speeds due to cold weather ceasing up lubricants. I believe the spotmatic I was using was CLAd within the past 5 years ish so that may have helped. Hi Graham, love your channel! A was very lucky and found a Spotmatic with the 50 1.4 8 element version attached at a local antique shop for only €35. So beautiful! The built quality of the lens surprised me. Smooth as butter and a lovely look to the rendering of the lens. Very special. Also found the cold shoe attachment and hood last week. The cold shoe clips onto my Spotmatic without any fuss though. Looking for the 35 3.5 the 28 and the 90. Can’t wait.

      @graham_white  Před 3 lety

      Nice! great find. I believe there are different types of cold shoes. The one in this video is spring loaded but I have one on another body that just slides on and is much easier. Good luck in your search for those lenses, they are fantastic.

    • @pametex
      @pametex Před 3 lety

      @@graham_white Huh, didn’t know that. Mine is of the spring loaded kind. I tried to slide it on at first, but that didn’t work, so I pinched the little wings on the side and that did the trick. Just as smooth as the lens. You mentioned issues with shutters in SP’s, mine has a strange one. If I activate the meter and take a picture the mirror keeps hanging on one side. So I activate the meter, adjust and deactivate. A doable workaround I’d say.

  • @normandong4479
    @normandong4479 Před 3 lety

    Pentax Spotmatic is a fine camera w its Takumar lenses. If you have had issues, it is due to age and lack of proper clean, lube & adjust. A CLA can make every camera work better. If you want a hot shoe w a wider range of ISO, you need to get a Spotmatic SPII.

I picked up a Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic with a Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8 lens, case, Sunpak flash unit, and Tamron 28mm f/2.8 lens last year for $45.00..all in excellent condition. First couple of rolls shot with the 55mm lens I was impressed with the sharpness and color rendition. A real nice, basic, easy to use camera.

      @graham_white  Před 3 lety +1

      they really are fantastic. I got a helios recently but haven't been using it much over my takumar 50 1.4... hard to weigh the benefit other than the softer and interesting bokeh. but need to switch it up some. yeah solid m42 bodies are great when you can find a good one.

    • @paulstillwell
      @paulstillwell Před 3 lety

      @@graham_white The Helios 44-2 is also a very sharp lens! It might have a bit of an advantage in video with the clicky and non-clicky aperture rings... you can set your most closed down aperture and then smoothly go from a more open aperture to the most closed aperture smoothly for a cool effect - I don't shoot much video so YMMV. For my next negative scanning session I am planning on trying it with a macro tube instead of the 50mm f4 Macro Tak I have been using so far. I will admit that mostly I have used the Helios for shooting wide or close to wide open for that special bokeh :-)

    If you like Spotmatic SP, and hate the clunkiness of Zenit cameras, you should look into Praktica cameras from East Germany, to my knowledge all of them are in M42. Yes they also do not have the bast build quality, there's too much of plastic in some models, but on the bright side all of them have a full range of exposure times from 1/1000ht fo a full sec. + B, a hot shoe, a vertically travelling metal shutter but the best thing of all, those are dirt cheap...

      I have always wondered if I would get that issue actually. But so far when I travel to cold places like this I am taking a very mechanically sound camera. such as the Nikon F2 or the Pentax spotmatic and I don't bother with batteries. So I haven't had issue with sticking shutter or dying failure due to battery. I can definitely see less sound cameras or bodies that havent been serviced recently jamming up do to interior build up of oils etc.
