- I am drawn to the beauty of sentences, Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie confesses in this interview. Nevertheless, it is important to keep a distance from your characters.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (b. 1977) discovered literature at a very early age. "I started reading and writing at the same time", she says in this conversation. "If the writing is going well, it is almost transcendent. Then it is a state of being."
Adichie explains, that she is drawn to melancholy: "Both in people, stories and music I find it very beautiful."
At the same time, Adichie distances herself from pure emotional literature. "People tend to think, that if a book supports your own prejudices, it's great literature. It's not. As a writer, you have to keep a distance to your subject. And in general, the definition of beauty in the western world is very narrow."
Adichie grew up in the southeastern part of Nigeria. After school, she studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria. At the age of 19, Adichie left Nigeria and moved to the United States for college, where she studied communications and political science in Philadelphia. In 2003, she completed a master's degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. In 2008, she received a Master of Arts degree in African studies from Yale University. Adichie has received numerous prizes for her literary work, including the novels Purple Hibiscus (2003) and Half of a yellow sun (2007) as well as the collection of short stories The Thing Around Your Neck (2009). Her latest novel Americanah (2013) was selected by the New York Times as one of The 10 Best Books of 2013.

Every time she speaks, she confirms how wonderfully inspirational she is.
+Nidah Mutheu I couldn't agree with your statement more... a beautiful woman inside and out
I can listen to her talk all day as well. She is intelligent, poise, opinionated, gorgeous, bold, brave and on and on!! One of my favorite authors.
"There are people who sort of have this belief that if somebody writes a book that in its spirit is derogatory to an entire continent... that somehow it's 'honest'." This is true on so many levels. I'm in love with this woman.
Her wealth of knowledge always mesmerises me.
The "Danger of the Single Story" presentation was truly beautiful. I show it to all my classes!
Anthony Dunn she can pull it off easily but I actually prefer hearing and seeing the interactive relationship between two people in interviews.'
This is my fav interview with Chimamanda...
Now this is a woman one can have as a role model. excellent!!
Yeah!
What a gorgeous smile she's got. Beautiful and intelligent lady
I just like and admire her. she is a role model
I love how I relate to almost everything she says. med school, writing, melancholy, love, fashion, African history, language , hair, teleportation in a story😟😟😟😟🇰🇪
She's spot on. Beauty should never be the "end all be all" for a woman. There is so much more to life
Absolutely!!!!
It's kind of easy to say "attractiveness doesn't matter" when you've never experienced being unattractive. Attractive people get more attention, are more easily forgiven their flaws, have more options open to them, have an easier time getting jobs, and, yes, have an easier time dating and meeting more interesting people on average (because even interesting people look for beauty when dating). Beauty doesn't solve everything, but it sure helps.
Olivier Faure That's true.
Definitely true. The 'worth' of a person should not be measured by their looks.
@@Yanaschaf tell that to society politicians the media the world!!!!!
@She’s liberated TV yes ,and that inner beauty will start to reflect on the outside.
Totally agree
THIS WOMAN IS BEAUTIFUL.
EVERY PART OF HER.
1:41 Beautiful what she says about melancholy. I recognize that too.
I like the fact that "care" has gone into something,......wow,...this expresses my heart!!! She's charming.....
that 'ceiling' thing about Obinze in Americanah is so funny😂

woman crush all day everyday! don't you just love her smile/laughter?!
Her laughter is so beautiful. She finds telling stories so natural. I like the fact she is not conforming to the societal norms, we should all be able to define who we want to be.
Chimamanda! I love this lady. She is well read and piercing with her position. You are a definition of beauty with brains. Higher heights in all you do.
She listens and talk with so much confidence. I’ve met her twice and I hope to have a sit down conversation with her in the future. Eloquence at its finest ❤️❤️❤️

I love how Chimamanda sees the world and things! Quite fascinating, independent and provocative to those set and stuck in their old thinking - a beautiful soul 💕 🤣🙌🏾
She's so intelligent and beautiful. I love her 💛💚💛
Chimmamanda you are truly inspirational and beautiful in a very sublime way.
She and Lupita Nyongo are 2 of the most beautiful women in the world!!!
She's so gorgeous and soft looking.
This how our Nigerian women are down to earth and very smart not all this kpankolo women you see every where in America having kids left and right not knowing who there father is.
jiggar22 How is your narrow minded comment regarding AFRICAN-American woman conducive to the spirit and message of this woman's teachings/writings? Marginalizing African-American women as "whores who have so many partners they have children who don't know their fathers" is the exact point she is preaching against in "The Dangers of a Single Story". Perhaps you should watch this speech. Please expand your thoughts through knowledge. Comments like these make you seem so...un-evolved. .

I wish all of the women in the world could see this. It's so important to value yourself beyond your looks and to cherish yourself and your values.

Yes, your writing is transcendent. And beautiful. And I hope you have many more stories to share, because they are moving and great, and beautiful, and thank you for that, Chimananda Adichie.
To end with "I see you", very beautiful.
Love this Woman
A pleasure to hear you, congratulations for your brilliant mind and personality!! We also love you in Peru.

I find her beautiful, interesting and I feel like I can’t get en of her😍😍
jeeeez she is soooooo pretty!
Amazing interview, I love Chimamanda , a great woman
My view of beauty is that it's not complex there's people who are beautiful and those who are not.. It's a sad truth.. Beauty is a blessing that's why when job passed his test in the Bible he was blessed with the most beautiful children
She is lovely, refreshing, gasp of fresh air hearing her speak
I have never read any of Chimamanda's work but I just really enjoy listening to her interviews she's so beautiful in her expression & perspective. She has so much grace and ease in her whole spirit.
I still grapple with the "hair" conversation. As a bi racial hair stylist I always wonder why African/African American women have so much judgement about hair. Women from all cultures alter their hair color texture length ex year round. We as black women are the only ones that are not allow to do to change our hair without it being a self hate statement. Why would we put our self in a box ? It's not as if we don't have a completely different approach and style to even straight styles. There is even a culture around the "straight" look that's unique And different than other women. We are aloud just like other women to be versatile after all we created all of it!
@7jandi7 valid point however l'm yet to find anyone outside the black race trying to 'emulate' /'mimic' (be it chemically or in extentions) the 4C texture. There is something very sad about that
@@kaypee9199 I don’t think you know this but in Korea they lovvve kinky hair and get permed and do infect emulate every thing Afro centric. there have always been women that tried to imitate black hairstyles, culture, shoot, American culture essentially is black culture in the 60s and 70s white girls got perms to make their hair kinky enough for a fro. One day we will love our selves enough to divorce the victims mentality redirect that energy on raising men that love black women and a culture that demands loyalty, community, black family first 1 man 1 women not multiple women. Truly being proud from a place of knowing how vital we are and not defensive because other are jealous or threatened. Instead of glorifying drugs glorifying the strength to be present to all that is. This is when hair will not even matter. If you love and respect your self no matter the style you will show up as the gift your are
OMG I love you and your books so much!

The power is in her voice and her intelligence.
i love the way she said "a bend in the river is the most honest book about Africa, that i have read, which i find profoundly annoying" with such a straight face.
I could listen to her for hours! I guess I need to bye some books of her!! :)
I enjoy her reflections and growth which affect her writing. I am inspired.
I love the way she defines beauty...not equating beauty with the outside shell...but how she connects .....I love it...

Oozing a lot of wisdom! Very well read. Strength of a woman.
I Love Her! She inspires me!
I love her, she is an inspiration!!
Am fascinated by Chimamanda and made my daughter to follow her.
It is easy to be dismissive of beauty when you are beautiful. Like anything you take it for granted. I like her, it's just the truth.
She's expressing things I feel all the time... Expression can be difficult when you're away from home
Splendid! But beauty also, I believe has 3 components; spiritual.intellectual and physical beauty. This explains why beautiful is not necessarily interesting. You're simple good!
In my own opinion the value of good jazz (or any music) is infinitely more than a diamond.
Love this woman
I so agree with her, I find melancholy very alluring in all thing
Beautiful!!
YOU ARE AMAZING!
Beauty draws attention and that is part of the larger process of finding and reaching to solutions.
