Why must Chinese people become "western refined" when the traditional non-manchu culture was pretty refined and even better than the swiss or french. Also why use european porcelain when chinese porcelain (old) is even better? Idk China is loosing itself to the West and these rich people have lost contact with their historical heritage (thanks to Mao an his damn cultural revolution) and are trying to imitate westerners when they have an example next door (Japan) of how to preserve your culture and still be sophisticated or refined (although they go to the other extreme, yet is an example)

Overall the new generation doesn't think very highly of their own culture but idolise anything "western". Whenever I'm in China and the topic of me being an European born Chinese comes up, it calls for lots of "wow" and an immediate social status boost. It's pretty peculiar and a bit sad I reckon

Having "higher education" does not make you a smarter person. Nor does it make you kind, generous, warm and a well rounded individual. I would rather be with people who are "rough around the edges so to speak" as opposed to people who are snobbish, drab, unoriginal and egotistical people.

taylor lavigne No, actually Matie Antoinette's head were cutted off because she tried to escape to Austria. Before the royal family journey to Austrian Netherlands, they're perfectly fine. The people want Constitutional Monarchy, the revolutionaries still want Louis XVI as head of state, because losing him means losing all treaties and starting over is just too hard (proved by how United States refused joining French war against the European Coalition because their treaties were made with King Louis XVI). But they decide to abandon (or escape) to Austrian lands (Marie's ancestral lands), and this is seen as treason by the french people. It's not because they eat well or dress fancy, it's because they abandon their own people in time of troubles.

I legitly hate this. Yes, I do believe Chinese people need mannerism classes, but this ridiculous class is just erasing our own culture. Why can’t we keep our culture while having manners? You don’t see Japanese people losing their culture while still maintaining their manners. In fact Japanese mannerisms goes even beyond Western mannerisms, while still keeping their culture. I’d love for Chinese people to not just copy others (especially Westerners), we have our own culture and it’s beautiful and amazing beyond comprehension. Why not keep our culture and have amazing manners too? Drinking and eating out of fancy French plates and cups does not make us more cultured or developed, in fact at the end of the day this just erases the beauty of our own history.

How about the part about using forks and knives instead of chopsticks. The west has set the standard simply because the United States transformed into a pre-eminent power during World War II. The west has gatekeeped cultural standards, and policed non-western countries for "backwards" culture, so much so that many east Asian nations have developed pronounced inferiority complexes to the west.

I already replied this somewhere else, but I feel compelled to repeat it since I think we're missing the point here. I believe the point of the "how to eat a banana elegantly" lesson is more about teaching knife and fork handling skills, it's practice for different maneuvers to slice and lift food with a fork and knife. Chinese people mostly use chopsticks for their entire life, so they would need to learn how to properly hold a knife and fork, how to cut food with it, the amount of pressure, sliding the knife to make a good clean cut, pressing food on to the fork then lifting it to their mouth without bits of food falling off. It may seem ridiculous to westerners because you grew up with that, but haven't you ever tried learning how to use chopsticks? The banana is just a nice medium to practice all the different ways you can use the knife and fork at one go.

You guys don't understand the situation in China, If you go to hongkong, Singapore, or Thailand, You will see a distaste for tourists from China. Though some not all of them have pretty much horrible etiquette.
There were witnesses of Chinese kids taking a dump in the middle of a shopping mall in Hong kong while their parents watched.
There was news of a flight passenger who opened the emergency door to get some fresh air. They come from a culture who would cut queues shamelessly, Squat on toilet bowls, Spit everywhere... In part this could be blamed by China's Cultural Revolution in Mao's Time.
They grew rich faster than their culture. The poor came from rural villages into urban life. Those who were never educated became millionaires.
