  • When you want to change or upgrade the jockey or pulley wheels in your Derailleur like a Shimano Dura-Ace / 105 / Ultegra / GRX / Tiagra, or a SRAM Eagle / GX / NX / X model derailleur for a MTB, racing, street, gravel, or e-bike, you will have different options to choose from. This video explains the 4 major types of options, from (1) a simple cheap plastic bushing wheel without bearings (2) one with open bearings, (3) one with closed steel bearings, and (4) one with closed ceramic bearings. It tells you what you need to measure (= number of teeth and width) before you can select the right one. Wheels can have anywhere from 9 to 14 teeth (T9 - T14) depending of the gear type and system on the bike and the width you need. Also, some bikes have a smaller upper wheel and larger lower wheel (for instance SRAM Eagle has 12T/14T). In terms of width, most wheels are 10 mm, a few are slimmer. The way to change a pulley wheel is very very simple if you have an Allen wrench and some blue thread-locker. To see a video about how to actually change the jockey wheel, please choose another video on CZcams. This video deals exclusively with explaining and showing the major types and how to determine what jockey wheel you need.

    I was looking all NIGHT FOR A VIDEO JUST LIKE THIS!!! Even GCN didn't have one like this- or maybe I was just too frustrated to keep looking. Thankfully I did buy the right ones. So many videos already assume you know ALL the parts of a bike, but I don't and want to learn them all. Thank you for making this. SO HELPFUL!!!! Albeit a day a late, and you taught me about jockey wheels!!! Now I know to buy the freewheeling ones next time, IF I CAN FIND 10 TEETH!!!!!

    If You like a quiet drive train stay away from alloy jockey wheels. The original nylon types are alot quieter. Also stay away from jockey wheels with thin spokes like the black one here in the video. They could break and destroy your derailleur.

    The top of the range shimano derailleurs have bearings in the jockey wheels and price wise are around forty dollars AU...

    Wouldn’t the aluminum pulley wheels wear on the chain and also cause more friction between chain and pulley wheel teeth?

      No, since the tension/resistance is very low and no power is exchanged between pulley wheel and chain. It is NOT comparable to the power exchange between chain vs front chain rings and cassette (Rear chain rings), which is the main reason for chain wear/stretching. Furthermore, a metal jockey wheel is typically made out of aluminum (soft metal).

      Agree with you. Since the plastic pulley wears out then I believe that there is friction and force that would affect the chain.

    Whats the name of the brand and where can i buy the (4) fourth jackey wheel?

      The one I am showing here is a cheap Amazon product called MUQZI ceramic pulley wheel. Most ceramic pulleywheel has the same freewheeling feature.

    worht it or nah?

      For most peopel NO ... However, I like the fact that you do not have to take the jockey wheel off to clean and maintain it. Therefore, personally, I use the free turning ones (red) on my preferred MTB. The main reason is that I save time on maintenance, but it also feels better to have a little better chain speed, the upgrade is cheap, and they look better :-)

    The problem are the bearing! Most these alu wheels use 2 type of bearing. Normal sealed bearing and these long run wheels use none sealed bearings which is crap

      dang, so no need to upgrade to these? my mate told me to get on the gear but I am thinking of just getting some performance upgrades

      @@FloridaBikeVlogger these pulley wheels doesnt give you a better Performance that you will see. I think there was a test of wheels from ceramic speed and there was a better Watt measure in 1 digit place. And these China wheels have a big down and that is the missing seal where dirt can get in the bearing and run them like crap.

      Totally agree. Non-sealed bearings are problematic, dirt gets in there.

    $300 jockey wheel? No

    Your "plain" bearing (aka mountain bike style) has lost its center bushing!

    • @NilsRandrup
      @NilsRandrup  Před 9 měsíci

      True. The bushing is a thin metal ring making it easier for the wheel spin.

    • @NilsRandrup
      @NilsRandrup  Před 9 měsíci

      The missing metal ring is almost identical to the metal rings you see above the black and red wheels
