best bet is to get one that you can go full non normal. that way each patch junction is isolated and stands on its own. then youre simply looking at the back of all your equipment. no looping back or cascading unless you tell it to
I have a Pro VLA II like yours. If I have two microphones, how do I connect both microphones into channel 1 and then from channel 1 to channel 2, as shown in your demonstration? Please advise
You will need a separate mixer to combine 2 microphones and have the line level output of the mixer into CH1 of Pro VLA. ART Pro VLA II is line level input/output only.
Escuse me do you know if can I use the channel one with my preamp to record and later use the channel two for inserts for mixing .??( as a plugin)) there are any problem with it???
Good video ! I was thinking of buying a Black Lion Audio B17A2 (LA2A into a 1176 clone) but its $1400 ,pretty much more than $1000 more than the ART Pro VLA 2 ,but I will get the ART better and save some some money . thank you for the video .
I will be making a video soon on how to set the correct stereo balance on the ART Pro VLA, as they are slightly out of balance from factory. Make sure you keep en eye out for that video.
@@RecordingStudio9 i will be on the look out , got my notifications on of course ! Thank you so much for your videos , there are very little videos on ART hardware , really appreciate your vídeos
I've watched this a few times. I will watch a few more I'm sure but I am able to follow and hear tonal changes in my signal flow. I wonder if you have used the vla for lots of tracking and if so, in the same multi mono fashion or just one channel for a vocal track?
I use the ART VLA almost always during mixing and not recording. I use on on drum bus, vocal channel in series and on the vocal bus, as well as on my mix bus. Each time adding a small amount of saturation to the signal using the compression. I feel the small amounts add up to a great 'powerful analog' audio signal between the digital processing. It's a personal thing.
What! A beautiful song! And thanks for the video about using the ART VLA II in series. I currently have a Behringer UltraGain Pro MIC2200 and Behringer Composer Pro XL MDX 2600 connected to my Behringer U-Phoria UMC1820 audio interface. Maybe one day I might upgrade to ART series of gear, but I'm not sure if average listeners are going to notice a difference even with similar settings. It's only when it comes to let's plays and content creation/podcasts. And by the way, what are the components besides dbx that you currently have?
Thanks for the comment. I also have and use the MDX2600, normally on my keys and guitars. You already have what you need, ART will not make much of a difference. The other units are my DEQ2496 Digital EQ and Mastering Processor, mainly used for room correction (see my video). and the TC-Helicon hardware pitch-correction and harmony processor (I hardly ever use it these days). And, my Lexicon MX400 FX unit. A few other units on the other side as well.
Hi. This is really great. I was looking at a TL Audio C-1. But now I’m considering this one. Have you tried to do this before the DAW? When it actually records?
Hi there, thanks for explaining stuff. Q. on the back of the VLA is the option +4 or -10. What purpose does this serve? Cheers. Pete from Auchtermuchty, Scotland.
+4dBu is the more professional balanced interface standard, and that's what my setting is. -10dBV is the more for unbalanced semi-Pro lower voltage standard used for cheaper audio gear. Using them as mixer Insert (unbalanced) then -10db. Using them direct balanced in/out from Audio Interface then +4db. Check your Audio Interface specs first.
Nice have just seen the real benefit of two channel outboard gear similar two stacking plugins(neat; obvious really, but yeah nice!) and I'm presuming you can run,the first output in series with more outboard gear and return allowing for inheritant latancys and added noise. I was looking to buy my first outboard and was nearly set on the DBX 286s but it is for singing vocals and realised real Tube/valve was best for bassy vocals and I dont have good dynamic control. Actually could you do some singing samples with none or wanna be;but can't as I am a deluded wanna be sing'er. A live Singer recording session with not so perfect vocalist. but as usual; great video; there seems to be a distinct lack of singing videos with ART Pro VLA 2 was starting to suspect its no good on vocals or weak or is youtube hidding them. I am starting to get really pissed at youtube suggesting shit im not interested in or iv already look at.
Hey - are you using a stereo audio interface? Recording dry, with output going to the Art, then it’s output going back into the interface to another track? Then you playback and record a track 2 with compression? Do that for each track? Then at mix down, run everything through the Art? Not too much compression in the final mix?
My interface has 8-in 8-out. I'm using just one input and one output for this. Pipeline Plugin allows to playback the track out and receives back onto the same track. If you need to use the ART again, then you need to print/record the return audio onto a new track (this is automatic in Studio One). Compression is an art and lots of experience. Thanks for watching.
TC Voiceworks is from my live and pre-melodyne days. It was much more affordable than the Anteras hardware during live and in the studio, Anteras Autotune. I don't use it much these days. I do like some of the Reverb effects though. Thanks for watching
DAW channel hardware insert plugin to M12 channel 6 (or any mono channel), MODE switch set to PC. M12 channel 6 has only SUB button down, so it only routes the audio to SUB output. The SUB output Left into the compressor. The output of the compressor into M12 channel 6 input, allowing the audio to route back into DAW hardware insert plugin. PS. This also depends on the DAW you are using. Not every DAW supports hardware I/O insert.
@@RecordingStudio9 Thanks. I made some experiments using the test oscillator and I tried to balance the right level of input and output, and I pusher the level button on the rear panel. Now I think I solved the problem. Thank you for your answer and your videos!!!
A lot of times the price of those vintage machines are just way too much. Technology has made it possible to own quality without breaking the bank. Go with the the Art. I did, and I love mine. Gives great results.
Bought this guy with the full upgrade path on everything. cost me a few hundred extra but sooooo worth it. great tips, hope youre doing well
Mine is dead standard and used on most of my mixes as bus compressor. I’m happy with the results.
The original vocals sound horrible distorted
great ideas- really like this video

Very good 👍🏻
Please share what patch bay you are using, and a snapshot of the connections would be great! I'm a newbie and like to learn.

if you wanna multi track vocals using this method just repeat the process on every track untill ur done
its a great compressor i really like it it has a great sound

Hi. This is really great. I was looking at a TL Audio C-1. But now I’m considering this one.
Have you tried to do this before the DAW? When it actually records?
Yes, as an insert from my mixer/interface for acoustic drums, as two mono channels, kick and snare. But mainly I use for bus compressor.

Because the VLA is stereo linked, most people use it on drums, mix bus etc. This video is good example on how to use it on vocals.
Don't waste your time with DBX. If you have to go cheaper than Art you might as well just use plugins. Seriously.
please who is the singer i love his voice what is his name for search him in spotify

My needles never move that close to red any reason why it's like my needles barely ever move
Your input signal maybe too low. Check the input level switch (-10db or +4db)
Hi! My ART makes some hiss (or white noise): I use balanced cables, my power line is good... what can I do to reduce or kill that noise?
It’s what makes it analog. How loud is it? Any white noise below -60db is normal. Maybe you have your gains too high.
@@RecordingStudio9 Thanks. I made some experiments using the test oscillator and I tried to balance the right level of input and output, and I pusher the level button on the rear panel.

How would i do this as a insert effect how would the wiring be ??
This depends on your DAW. I have a few examples using Studio One, Cakewalk, Reaper etc on my channel.
Should the link dual button be pressed
Dual link is mainly for stere channel processing. Unlinking sets as two independent channels.
Great video, thank you
Can this serial mode technique be used on all stereo compressors?
Yes, as long as they have the Stereo Link option, and most do.

Hi Vatche - when you consider the PRO VLA ll - what are your thoughts vs a LA-610?
Is your studio recording professional music?
I can't compare as I don't own LA-610.
