"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a nine-part Pink Floyd composition written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Rick Wright. It appeared on Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here.
The song was conceived and written as a tribute and remembrance to their former band member Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd.
Barrett was ousted from the band by the other members in 1968 due to his drug use and (partly-related) troubled mental health, which had affected his ability to integrate with the rest of the band and perform and create as a musician. He was replaced by David Gilmour, Barrett's former school friend who had initially been brought in as second guitar. The remaining band members felt guilty for removing him, but they viewed it as necessary, admiring Barrett's creativity and being concerned about his severe mental decline.
    Barrett incident
Syd Barrett, visiting Abbey Road Studios on 5 June 1975
One day during recording, Barrett (now heavyset, with a completely shaved head and eyebrows) wandered into the studio (although Mason has since stated that he is not entirely certain whether "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was the particular work being recorded when Barrett was there). Because of his drastically changed appearance, the band did not recognize him for some time. When they eventually determined the withdrawn man in the corner was Barrett, Roger Waters became so distressed about Barrett's appearance he was reduced to tears.[6] Someone asked to play the suite again for Barrett and he said a second playback was not needed when they had just heard it. When asked what he thought of the song, Barrett said it sounded a "bit old".

Same here, and I'm delighted when I run across the "youngsters" who are just now discovering the Floyd experience. What I've noticed over the years is the meaning of many songs does change, as we gain knowledge and our mortality becomes more evident. I'm certain that I'd be a different person had I never heard these masterpieces.

As a school kid in England in the 70s, freezing cold and dark winter mornings, I’d stick headphones on and listen to this, really loud, each day, as I got dressed in front of the heater before getting on my pushbike to deliver newspapers before heading to school. I swear it was the thing that got me going every day... and now, 45 years later, it’s still amazing, and never boring ! The definition of a masterpiece

The best concert I've ever had the honor to see, you see I was there and we were partying, it was a feeling of being free, the music was the best, there were speakers set up to left, right, behind and to the front...the light show was phenomenal-it appeared Pink Floyd was in a crystal ball, with the Chicago skyline in the background-amazing. There was nowhere to sit, the stairways were jam packed, most of all everyone got along...I was young and free. The finale-after the fireworks, they played Money and Breathe from Dark side of the Moon. If I recall about 70, 000 people. By far the best concert I've ever seen with friends ever.

    You shone like the sun
    Shine on, you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
    Shine on, you crazy diamond
You were caught in the cross fire
    Of childhood and stardom
    Blown on the steel breeze
Come on, you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon
    You cried for the moon
    Shine on, you crazy diamond
    Threatened by shadows at night
    And exposed in the light
Shine (shine) on, you crazy (you crazy) damond
Well, you wore out your welcome
    With random precision
    Rode on the steel breeze
Come on, you raver, you seer of visions
Come on, you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

I am 48 years old, I discovered it with 12 since my cousins a little older listened to them, it has accompanied me all my life and I never get tired of hearing them, there is no group that gives me more goosebumps than Pink Floyd, it is a hurt that there will NEVER be something that comes close to it even the least, this King Crimson that are good, but that magic that Pink Ployd has, those harsh and critical lyrics... no band like it... All his songs I like, but for me there is a very special and underrated, his lyrics are beastly that is Sorrow, in the version of Pulse I jump the tears

Now in retirement with more free time to listen to abnormally long songs, I have come to fall in love with their music!!!!!WOW OH WOW- the music, the lead singer, the back up harmony, and you cannot leave out the light show of light shows- these guys are addictive- the more I listen, the more I want to listen- CAN YOU SAY MUSICAL GENIUSES!!!!! I LOVE ALMOST ALL MUSIC- these guys and all alone at the top of the pile of all the greats-Queen, Beatles,Zeppelin, Journey, Ac/DC, Foreigner, Kiss, Guns and Roses, Eagles and many many other.

Pink Floyd. Pulse. As they embark for their American tour. They will have 3 identical stages touring the Americas at the same time. Each stage takes 3 days to setup. 49 simis of equipment for each show. Enough power to make the light show look as bright as the sun. Take a mockup of the Hollywood bowl on tour. Have the best lightshow ever built. Largest round screen with it's own lightshow. Biggest mirror ball ever on tour. This show was just pure Genous. Pink Floyd is by far the most extravagant band ever. Now let's talk the music. Well, I really have no words but just impeccable class. Gilmour self-taught guitar player who barrowed a guitar at 11 and never returned it. The rest is history at its finest. I seen this show Amis Iowa along with Division bell tour. It changed my life. In my eyes no one even comes close.
