Summer 98 I was working in the bakery for a chain bagel shop. Between the oven and two boiling kettles it would be over 100 degrees in there everyday. Two giant industrial fans would move the air around only adding to the convection heating of the room. There was one door outside and one vent/window. It was a hot and humid summer. The fans were so loud. I would blast this CD louder than that din, in the heat, shovelling bagels from the boiling kettle into the burning oven. Sweat pouring out of me, seasoning the bagels. Bits of dried garlic and poppy seeds caked to my pants and shoes. The smell of fermenting dough mixing stale onion and garlic flakes. Mixing the everything seasoning by hand. Sesame and poppy seeds caking my sweat drenched arms. gagging on the dust blowing up from the garlic bins. Onion burning my eyes. Packing 20 blocks of cream cheese into those 2 quart stainless steel containers every sandwich shop uses... The cheese melting in the heat... Alan Vega screaming at me. The throbbing din of Pan Sonic's primitive electronics. The unending din of the industrial fans. The balsting heat and steam in every direction... It was a vibe.
In this 1998 collaboration between Pansonic and Alan Vega, Pansonic create a desolate soundscape over which Vega chants his incantations. The glitch-noir futuristic disco "Medal", the noise-techno "Incredible Criminals", the factory pulse of "Motor Maniac" and "Sick Sick USA", the frozen cyclone "No Home Kings" (with delirious vocals), the free-form dadaist collage "Outrage for the Frontpage", the thriller-soundtrack of "Endless", the electric radiation of "Desperate Fa Tha Miracle", the homage to the original spirit of Suicide "Red Lights Down", the percussive/ minimalist "Fun In The Wonderland", the suspenseful electro "Baby Lips", the monolithic cardiogram ambience of "Disgrace" etc are more than simple songs; they are a visionary depiction of cyber-neurosis.
