    Actually, no John. This is the guy who carried those two heavy tablets of stone down a mountain to enlighten struggling artists! ;-) I'm just restarting drawing after a 40-year hiatus and today stumbled across this 5-Pencil Method while desperately searching for a way to draw realistic hair. Not a beard, though I'll get onto that too, but on a lynx. I'm still open-mouthed at the clarity, depth and completely open-handedness of this this man's teaching. Many thanks Darrel Tank for your remarkable ability to inspire and encourage.

    Its good to be reminded there are variable pencil grades which aid in shading and bringing out values on a piece of work. Many times we stay with several favorite pencils and incorporate stumps and methods of smudging, particularly fingertip number 1. I enjoyed this tutorial very much. Thank you🙂

    After using a tortillian for a while now, this video has definitely made me question it being the better option. I now understand why after a certain point it becomes hard for me to put more pencil down - and in turn take it away. I always struggle. Also using the texture of the paper I think will help improve my drawings so much more. Thank you so much for this!

    A lighter line is easier to erase, so I’d say start lighter and gradually build on it until you are happy. A bit like watercolour painting. Acrylics you paint light on dark. I feel more confident drawing very lightly and softly and buildingon it. Then I don’t get those deep lines in my paper which I can’t ever get rid of. Always soft light with pencil don’t press into drawing

    Yes, us different types of paper, makes you a better artist. realy it does. Like horse riding or driving. Riding different horses will make you a far better rider. Due to different personalities, paces and experience and temperament of your partner. As with paper and pencil. Even .esrning the feel of when your point wears down gradually. It reaches a moment that’s perfect in your hands before you need to resharpen it.

    I oddly found its useful to be ambidextrous to a degree. Same with painting. Simply because my hand hides my lines already drawn where I want to draw or paint into and if I can swop hands I uncover that bit right away. Just a tip that might or might not be useful to you too.

    I have been drawing from your smooth sphere video. The best sphere I could find was an old base ball. set up my lights and got similar effects. After a few dozen practices I decided to finish the ball with the string and all. It worked very well. It reminded me where my light, dark, and reflective light was even though with each seam there was it's own lights and dark areas. Tried the method on a face and also worked well even though there was a lot of erasing around the nose cheeks etc. Am I going in the wrong direction and just shade parts instead of areas? I only use the 2H pencil and then go back and do the details with the other pencils..

    • @5PencilMethod
      @5PencilMethod  Před 8 lety

      +Steve Larsen The principles are the same, regardless of which pencil you use, but generally Darrel starts his shading in the darkest portions of what he is drawing and works toward the highlight. In other words, he would start by laying down value in only the shadow areas with his 4H pencil and then use his 2H pencil to reinforce that base layer and extend just a little further toward the lightest area and then back to his 4H to blend the two together. He would then repeat this process with the next three pencils. Hope this helps! Feel free to email support@fivepencilmethod.com if you have any other questions. ~Diane, 5PM Team

      Hi Stormtrooper: Both sides of the Bristol Vellum have a non-smooth textures. It's just that the "back" is a finer texture and the "front" is a coarser texture. But both sides have a rougher textures than the smooth stock. - Luke with the 5-Pencil team

    • @5PencilMethod
      @5PencilMethod  Před 7 lety +3

      I see. I don't believe Darrel wants to totally have a smooth texture in every portion of his drawings. That's why he actually WANTS to have the grain on the paper because it allows him to capture certain textures that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve. There may be portions of a portrait where he wants to have a smoother texture and some portions where he wants to have a coarser texture which using a paper with a tooth allows him to accomplish. Hope that helps. - Luke with the 5-Pencil Method team

I have been trying very hard to learn the 5pm tapered stroke I have spent 5hrs a day for about two weeks trying to get the sphere down but I cannot get my pencils to lay down like you do in the videos. I had some Prismacolors but find them gritty and that they scratch the paper, I just bought some KOH-I-NOOR Hardtmuth pencils and they seem a little better but I cannot achieve the smooth blending that I see from you. Hey Darryl and team,
    I am finding that when i build up layers i am still getting the shine, how can i prevent this?
    Is it perhaps that i need to lighten the pressure more and use the value to my advantage.
    I really want to take my drawing to the next level of finer detail but struggling somewhat due to me being over critical of my work.
    regards Jason

      Hi Jason! Darrel covered this topic in the following video: How to Avoid Dreaded "Graphite Shine" in Your Pencil Drawings ~Diane, 5PM Team

      Hey Diane & team
      I watched the video, before i actually posted the comment sorry i should have said, I'm not sure what to do as its still having that god awful glare, even after building up layers by the time i have got to 3rd pencil.

      Jason Zaple Hey Jason, this is Jeremy with the team. My first question would be what paper are you using? Drawing on a paper without a good "tooth" can cause the graphite to just kind of sit on top of the paper and that will cause a nasty shine. Another thing you'll want to be really careful of is your pencil pressure. It's easy to have a heavy hand and not even realize it. Pressing too hard, even if you are moving forward carefully and in layers, can cause a build up of graphite and give you shine as well. The only other factor I can think of that may be causing you grief would be the type of pencils you are using. What brand and model do you use? I've heard from some folks that certain brands of pencils, even "higher quality" pencils tend to have a higher graphite content and are therefore more shiny... So, several possibilities there! Also, I'm sure you saw in the video, but Darrel even recommends using workable fixative to reduce graphite sheen. Just be sure that you do quick, even bursts across the entire drawing and let each layer dry before adding more. But I would try to fix it before this stage. Let me know if this helps you out at all. I have a feeling it's one of the issues above giving all the trouble. Thanks for touching base and for your support. All the best, Jeremy

      Hi Jeremy,
      Thanks for the in depth reply; I can say i am using Windsor and Newton bristol board A3 240gms acid free, the pencils i use is Lyra as derwent and castell generally the only ones can get here in the U.K although i find them too grainy for my liking and the wood they seem to use is of a poor quality also.
      is there a way of testing pressure? I do use the pencil in the correct way as Darrel explains, at least I think so anyway I also have yet to try the fixative as I noticed how much it discolors the paper when Darrel gave the demonstration.
      what about charcoal pencils, should i consider these perhaps?
      regards
      Jason

      HI Jason!
      Darrel doesn't recommended mixing charcoal and graphite as that can easily ruin a drawing. Not saying it can't be done, but unlike pure graphite alone, charcoal cannot (easily) be backed off so once you've committed to using it you don't have the same freedom you have with graphite. One way to get used to the feel of each pencil and not overcompensate by changing pressure is to practice the patches exercise. Here's part of the description from the video: "The strokes will gain their full value by utilizing the tracking procedure. Then, leaving a clean edge on one side of your patch, they will become progressively lighter as you move away from the darkest value of the pencil. As you lay them side, by side, you should see a gradation of values. It should fade away to nothing. As you become sensitive to the pressure and visual aspects of your patches, this will add the next dimension of contour and curve to your stroke." • @5PencilMethod
      @5PencilMethod  Před 9 lety

      No, no charcoal and only the 4H, 2H, HB, 2B & 4B. Many users on Darrel's online Community favor the Canson paper. The eraser is a Tombow Mono Zero eraser and you can buy them from Amazon, which does ship to Egypt. If you have any other questions, feel free to email support@fivepencilmethod.com.~Diane, 5PM Team
