Comparing apples to oranges. An american "hot rod" is a customized street or drag car originally patterned after the old "track rods" of the late 30's. "Rat rods" are closer to the original concept. A UK "hot rod" is a classification of oval track racer. One has nothing to do with the other except for their name. In the US, I raced a car we called a Pro-4 Modified. Replace the rear wing with a spoiler, steel wheels, and the UK car would likely be Pro-4 legal. We even used the same tires.
