Emo isn't really so much a genre as an insult. Since its origins in the mid-80s Revolution Summer, through the Midwestern “second wave” and beyond pretty much every band that has been labelled with the word has despised it. In many ways genre is just a way to group bands together, used by journalists to make sense of the multitudes of music they have to listen to, define and review. But because of this “emo” has been lazily applied to any punkish music with a emotional heartbeat. Rites of Spring, Lifetime, Dashboard Confessional's "Screaming Infidelities" and My Chemical Romance have all been tagged with “emo” despite sounding completely different. Another band that shouldered the burden was Jimmy Eat World, deflecting the term while inspiring a multitude under that vague banner. Their 1999 album Clarity, with tracks like "Goodbye Sky Harbor", paved the way for a whole generation of heart-on-sleeve bands throughout the first decade of the 21st century. Their next album Bleed American was the album that made this sound mainstream, charting on Billboard and making the previously underground sound pop. Featuring hit singles like "Salt Sweat Sugar", "A Praise Chorus", "Sweetness" and of course, "The Middle". But due to label issues that album and its resulting repercussions almost didn't happen. This is how Bleed American saved Jimmy Eat World.

Jimmy Eat World was one of a few bands that actually "made it" based on the music they created. Not looks, not attitude, but music. I will always respect that.

One thing that was left out of this video is the promotion from Tom Delonge. And at the time blink-182 was the biggest band in the world and definitely reached the 11 to 23 year old demographic. Tom singing Jimmy Eat World’s praises relentlessly drove countless numbers of fans of blink, to Jimmy Eat World as Bleed American was being released.
Bleed American is undoubtedly one of the finest ‘all killer, no filler’ albums of all time. It still gets regular plays in my house.

@@GetAsCloseAsYouCan It took me way too long to take Jimmy Eat World seriously and give their music a listen (outside of The Middle), and Futures just clicked with me so well. It isn't just my favorite Jimmy Eat World album, but one of my favorite albums of all time. So fucking amazing.
I wanted to be a drummer so bad when I was in high school. My parents got me a drum set & lessons for Christmas, I was over the moon. I'll never forget how chill my instructor was. In his 50's, long hair, made a living playing live jazz in bars, prlly smoked a lot of weed but was 100% professional around his students.
He asked me to bring in a song that I wanted to learn how to play, so I brought him 9:50 J.E.W.'s The Authority Song. He showed me how to transcribe the beats on paper, I didn't even know drums could be written like that. He had never heard of the band before but after I introduced him to that song (and we had to listen to it OVER AND OVER AND OVER again)-- he went out and bought their CD's and became a huge fan.
The song "The Middle" has gotten me through some hard times. I know that I'm a full-grown adult but I still and forever will love that song. Sometimes you just need someone to remind you that "everything is going to be alright" when real life goes to shit.
It got me through my non-self-medicated drug hazes in early high-school. I remember basically singing the chorus over and over reassuring myself that I wouldn’t go back to the hell that was suicide street...

I remember ordering Clarity from a mail order alt/punk catalogue just because I liked the cover and it became the album that defined my late teenage years and I still listen to it regularly. Bleed American was the soundtrack for the summer after graduating from school and got me through a difficult time full of uncertainty. Thank you so much for telling the story of this band in such a heartfelt way.
Perfect album released at the perfect time and written in a timeless manner so it still feels just as relevant now as it did when it was first released.
As someone who has listened to hundreds of emo bands, I can say that you almost perfectly described emo. You clearly did your research on this near-dead and really misunderstood genre. Thank you and kudos
I did think it was funny to describe emo bands as sounding "completely different" and then giving 3 driving electric guitar songs with vocal fry male leads as examples. :)

Honestly they're underrated imo, there's more than The Middle, Sweetness, Pain, etc.
Clarity is without question their best record in my opinion, but Bleed American is super strong in its own right. It shows an amazing progressive step forward for the band and is a real treasure.

Clarity and Futures are for me the best albums but as the vid says Bleed American hit all the right the buttons in its day and even though it appears at first listen to be 'too poppy to matter' it has elevated itself to become a piece of true Americana canon
@@ip3948 I liked some songs on Futures but honestly I skip so many of them because they never really hit with me. Clarity is something i literally listen to on repeat for hours at a time and BA (aside from Praise Chorus) is something i can do the same with. To each their own of course, some things speak to people while others dont, but BA will always be among my fav JEW records.

This is one of my favorite albums. I was in high school, 10th grade, when it came out. I remember driving in my '74 Chevy Nova playing 'If You Don't Don't" as loud as I could. Bleed American has been a staple on my phone over the years of my adult life too.

I'm more of a metal head or hardcore kinda guy these days, but I loved this album when it dropped, and I still love it, and the band in general, to this day. Middle school was hell for me, and this is one of the bands that helped me through, a long with a lot of bands that were actually referenced in this video, including SOAD, POD, Weezer, and bands like Linkin Park, Disturbed, The Offspring, Less Than Jake, Chevelle, Rise Against, etc. Basically, all those alternative rock, alternative metal, pop punk, Cali-core, Nu-Metal type bands. I went from a heavily bullied and medicated social outcast to being moderately well adjusted because I had music as an outlet, as well as the small support circle cadre of dedicated friends who were really there for me, talking me down more than once. LAN Cafe excursions playing Counter-Strike as a mitigant when depressed, or trips to concerts with friends and family, is what made me anything resembling okay. The people in my life, and music, literally saved me, and it's likely the only reason I'm even alive today, and not dead from something self-inflicted. As much as the world sucks today, I'm glad I'm alive to even try to make a positive difference for myself and others, so I'd say overall outcome is better than what it could have been, to say the least. People say violent video games and emotive, especially sad or angry, aggressive music, makes people violent, but for me, it was downright cathartic, so I'm going to say they are dead wrong, as an ironic turn of phrase. I'm Rick, I'm bipolar, and I hold Jimmy Eat World in a special place in my hear, and thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I love that there is footage from the 1st Unitarian Church in Philly in this video! So many great shows happened there.
In addition to having incredibly timeless records, one of the other things I've always loved so much about Jimmy Eat World was how emblematic they were of the death of the so-called "rock 'n roll lifestyle." According to journalists who spent time on the road with them, it was always their crew who had been doing all of the reckless debauchery, and never the band. It just shows that music can be great and stand the test of time, and the musicians can simultaneously not be assholes, which I always appreciated

JEW is the only band I can claim as being there from nearly the beginning, back in ‘95. My sister-in-law worked for Capitol Records as a publicist, and gave me their first album and a four-song sampler cassette tape of songs from Static (“Thinking, That’s All,” “Seventeen,” “Call It In The Air,” and “Rockstar”). I listened to that cd and cassette OVER AND OVEF AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again until Static came out nearly a year later.
Since I was a big fan, my sister-in-law told their publicist, and he gave me a stack of copies of the album to give to my friends and tell about the band. I told everyone I could, and was even known as “Jimmy Eat World Tim” by my friend, who I called “Punk Rock Josh.”
I can go on and on about seeing them live a bunch of times, hanging out with them (even went to the same movie with them), but I’ll shut up😛😛😛

I just came across this one today because Jimmy Eat World just released their new album, and being a fan, I wanted to check the new video... I'm hooked! "If You Don't Don't" takes me back in an instant.
That sound and scene was widely mocked and was generally uncool and it's interesting now to see how much respect it gets from the mainstream. We were really lucky to have grown up in that era of music with so many great bands. I am proud to have been a part of it.

Jimmy Eat World's Clarity album is one of the my favorite albums of all time, out shining some of my favorite bands. The opening of the song Table for Glasses is still to this day my favorite opening song I've ever heard. It's what got me through the entire album, even finishing Goodbye Sky Harbor in it's entirety because the album is that poetic to me. They are the first band to be labeled Hardcore Emo and there will NEVER be another Clarity style album again. I've said that years ago and i'll say it years from now. It will never change.

With all due respect to the Gin Blossoms, Jimmy Eat World is the best band to come out of my home town in Arizona. 'Clarity' is easily one of the most influential "emo" albums ever made.

Just the other day, I heard someone on the radio refer to Jimmy Eat World as ‘one hit wonders’ and I lost my shit. My older brother’s friend worked at a record store and he dropped off two CDs for my brother. One was the Pixies’ Surfer Rosa and the other was Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity that had just come out. I put them on and listened to both back to back and was hooked. I bought Bleed American myself a couple years later and Futures a couple years after that. Those albums are still in my car, getting fairly regular use year-round.
I love Jimmy Eat World, but I was also very impressed at the quality of this video. Relevant footage, interesting details, emotional epilogue. Let's give it up for Trash Theory
This is an amazing video. Had me on the verge of tears. The album meant so much to me. And the middle offered me something more than just assurances during that dark time for our country and in my life. It was there for me. This video describes that better than I could.

Dashboard Confessional is one of my all-time favorite bands, and for the longest time, I thought they were the only “emo” band I liked bc that next massive wave of scene kid, suburban pseudo-punk never really did much for me, but then one day it kinda dawned on me that Jimmy Eat World was basically emo. So... yeah, I like two or three emo bands, I guess 🤷🏼♂️😉 lol

Another great video. Thank you Trash Theory. I haven't listened to every Jimmy Eat World album but will always have a soft spot for them and their emotive and melodic compositions. While I will always have a fondness for Bleed American as my introduction to the band and emotional alternative music, like many fans here Clarity was, and remains, the one for me. I weirdly came to it in my late teens/early 20s as a student some years after Bleed American and that's when I truly became a fan.
I’m sure everyone has other albums they could mention, but for me, this album is perfect start to finish. Every song. No skipping needed.

I remember getting into Jimmy Eat World in the most unconventional way... I was playing Midnight Club, the street racing game for PS2, and I heard one of their lesser-known, but still growing in popularity singles, "Just Tonight". I'll never forget the way that song would make me race, man. The minute I lost any race, I KNEW if I put this song on, I wasn't losing the next one. No way.
I never forgot that courage that the song gave me, and as I looked more into the bands whole discography, I noticed a lot more of their songs giving me the same sensation... pure, utter confidence. Like everything was going to be alright, even if it didn't feel like it at the time. To this day, I know some bands that give off a similar feeling in some songs, but there will NEVER be another band like Jimmy Eat World, that encompasses that feeling better. So many good memories from finding this album. Thanks for the video, and the nostalgia run!

When I went to see Green Day back in 2005 or so I had no idea who was opening up for them, after Flogging Molly was done (they were great) the crew let down FM’s backdrop and behind it was a white sheet with a pentagram written with marker and some name for some band I’d never heard of let alone I don’t think I could read the sloppy marker writing, anyway it was a little bizarre because under the sheet you could clearly see Green Day’s expensive American Idiot backdrop, so we waited to see what we were gonna get then a music video came on of some guys in the middle of the desert singing cheesy death metal, the “singer” if you could call him that had blood on his face, and I was confused until Jim Adkins ran out and went right into a Jimmy Eat World song, probably Authority Song, I don’t think it was Sweetness, but the crowd went freaking nuts! Some big tall ass dude rushed through our group and everyone else that was crowding the stage so he could get to the front and we started moving around like a fricken wave which eventually got worse once Green Day came on, it was literally like swimming or well tumbling in the water at the beach
Physicists have actually done studies which show people in an audience where that kinda of thing is happening, a wave or a crush, people actually are behaving like water particles, and it's more accurate to use the physics of fluid dynamics to describe it. No really, that's an actual thing.
And yeah being in a crush is bizzare as it is terrifying. You feel like you're floating, like you're not touching the floor really. And it's not any one person's fault, it's everyone's and no-one's. I was in a crush once, also at a Green Day gig, at Leeds Festival in the UK back in I think 2005 as well, funny that. It was a weird arse day, 50 Cent had been on just before Green Day and got booed and bottled his whole set. Dunno what they were thinking putting him on in front of Green Day fans. Anyway the crush started and it was terrifying, it was hard to breathe. And in the UK we have an infamous crush that happened in the 80s at a football match where 96 people, including a whole bunch of kids, died because of a crush and because of the police being criminally idiotic and shoving everybody into one cage (football matches had cages for the crowds back then, to try and stop hooligans) instead if into 3 or 4 cages. So when that crush began it was genuinely like "oh fuck am I gonna die right now?". Because you cannot control it, or escape it. There's literally nothing you can do. You're just at the mercy of the crowd. And you're contributing in your own tiny way to it as well, but nobody is in control, nobody can change what eventually will or won't happen
have been waiting for you to mention the promise ring, one of my all time favourite bands. would love to see you do something on maritime and how the promise ring and dismemberment plan merged. i think they're one of the most underrated pop bands about.

What?!?!? That solo in The Middle is awesome. I’ve always really enjoyed it. It was bad ass, in my opinion. It was kind of a shred.

IgNasty86 Jim Adkins said it’s the worst song he’s written. I believe it ‘cause they have so many more gems than that. It’s super watered down and even more poppy compared to their other stuff with more substance.
its a good solo but imo not a shred. it changes between notes very slowly. Generally shredding denotes faster melodies (yes he picks fast on 1 note). we cant call every time someone's able to play guitar "shredding".
Music critic types are inclined to call any guitar solo cheesy whenever they feel like it. Guitar player types are inclined to hate on any guitar solo that doesn’t meet their narrowminded standards set by [**insert preferred guitar hero here**].
I strongly recommend ignoring both types of people when it comes to this topic (and several others).
