- The Rough Rider Classic Carbon Collection is a set of 14 traditional pattern slip joint knives. I was lucky enough to win this set as part of a National Knife Day Celebration by Smoky Mountain Knife Works. The celebration was on Friday, August 24, 2018. Winners were announced Tuesday August 28. I received the knives on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Talk about fast! Thank you SMKW for holding such a great contest! I'm honored to be one of the lucky winners!
I thought I'd share my luck and let folks know what i think about this wonderful new series by Rough Rider!

Gave it a thumbs up... although as a Trapper fan, it was hard to hear you say you hate 'em. To each their own... but maybe you'll come to your senses someday! Seriously, I enjoy your videos. Thanks for the work.
I don't really hate the knife. I hate the way the way they are pushed and promoted.I would also bet money the Buck 110 style of knife is more popular than the Trapper.
LOVE that 2 blade Folding Hunter! The Sodbuster too.
What a lovely little instant collection! You were very lucky!
Slick Slicers, someday, I’ll need to make a video of Knives I’ve won in contests! Some good, some not so good! But this was indeed a good win! Thanks.
They DO have the Classic Carbon Barlow now!....It's a good one....Fits right in with the other frames!
Absolutely love this series❤️ I have thought about just buying the entire current series.
What amazes me is the amount of detail on every knife. I mean this is maybe a $12 knife retail and the quality is what you might find on much more expensive knives.
Your absolutely right we have asked for a high carbon knife for years on Rough Rider and they delivered!
It is really pretty cool, Steve. And it has two really nice Stockmans. Maybe a sowbelly is in future or perhaps a stockman with a reamer. I'm really hoping to see this series expand. I tell you what, I think my favorite just might be that locking sodbuster but then there are few others that are just totally amazing, especially for $12-13 each!
Steve H at least we aint talkin bout bench n spydie. Sick ov them2🔪🔪
Congrats on winning Tobias! Enjoyed the review.
Charles Sample, thanks for dropping by. I’m glad you enjoyed the review.
Just got the split back. Very very nice knife. I agree, I love to a scout knife in this series. Amazing they sell these for $13!
The price truly is amazing. I'm in the process of purchasing more of them for gifts and for everyday use. Hard not to at the low price. Thanks for watching!
That stockman is a true beauty! 🤩
I have the splitback whittler. And I love whittling with it. It hogs out big chunks, and that very narrow tip is such an awesomely useful blade tip.
Got a Case seahorse whittler on the way. Hope it gets here soon!
Wow...so awesome you won this complete set!
I'm a happy camper. I'm thinking I'll get a display box and just pick up seconds on the ones that I really want to use. I'd hate to break up the set! Thanks for watching!
Wow! I am gonna have to try that seahorse whittler and the camp/scout knife. Looks immensely well crafted mostly.
It is put together well enough but it is way heavier than it needs to be.
I always love a Barlow. That would be a nice addition.
Barlows are one of those classics. If you haven't checked out Slick Slicers, I strong urge you to check out selection of Sheffield made Barlows. They put the American and German made Barlows to shame.
Excellant study! Thanks!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for dropping by!
I like Rough Riders in general but really like the carbon series I already have the two stockmen and a carbon canoe is on order.
I would love to see the two blade Half Hawk in carbon and the Teardrop jack in carbon would be tempting.
I agree! They really need to expand this series. So many folks want carbon steel blades! Thanks for watching and thanks for your thoughts!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias I came over from Paddy, he recommended your channel and he's right. Now I need to catch up.
The carbon steel makes these knives tempting. Update I have bought a couple of knives from the series and I am very impressed by the large stockman.
If you've never bought a Rough Ryder knife, this might be a good one to start with, if you're looking for a Carbon Steel blade on a traditional pattern. Very reasonable price for pocket knife. Thanks for watching.
Got the Sowbelly about a week ago and the weather's been so wet recently it's definitely Stainless steel time. It'll have to wait to get put through it's paces. Nice knife though.
I like the wax paper.
Heck of a win! A cub and a mini canoe would be cool.
That is INSANE! Congrats on the win!!!
BushcraftWoodsDevil, thanks. What’s truly insane is SMKW gave away something like 23 prizes that day!
I believe these carbon steel knives are T10 carbon steel, that’s what they were advertised as at work (I work at SMKW) this is a steel that’s either made in China, or foreign made but used a lot by the Chinese sword and knife manufacturers. It seems to be at least as good as 1095. Of course the real test is if the heat treating is done correctly. Like the videos, glad these knives are so cheap, I would love to carry Great Eastern and Case only but y’know, not all of us can do that. They really seem to be pretty good.
You are correct. T10 is a Chinese equivalent of 1095 Carbon.
Wow ! instant knife collection. Very nice Knives, Congrats. :-)
I love the yellow handles!!!
Thank you for sharing your carbon bladed bonanza, I can't think of a more deserving winner! I fully agree with your 4 additions to this series as that would cover all or most of the major pattern bases :)
JJ Cahill, recently found out the steel used is T-10, a Chinese Tool Steel that is arguably similar to 1095.
Really good knives. Thanks for watching.
Great to know, thanks!
Nice. I did not know RR did carbon steel.
Lars Buskkraft, it is pretty cool. Thief have a few others but this is their first carbon steel series. The steel is a T10 which is similar to American 1095 carbon steel. Thanks much for watching!
Great video. Thank you. I would like to see a carbon steel barlow with a sheepsfoot main blade and a 4 blade congress. I just bought the half hawk and can't wait to get it.
The Congress definitely belongs among the classic carbons. You really can find a more Classic American knife.
I'm surprised there was no Barlow, Gunstock or a Teardrop pattern. You can't get anymore classic than those.
I was really surprised by the lack of a Barlow. And Rough Rider has recently started making Teardrops in other lines; so I agree. It seems a natural in this line. All would make great choices for the Carbon line. Thank you for your thoughts and for watching.
Or copperhead or sowbelly
@@raiderfandew One of those stockmans is a sowbelly I think
@@raiderfandew, I'm really surprised that they didn't choose the Sowbelly for the Stockman in the series straight away. It seems like the most popular of the stockmans, currently. And I'll take a copperhead over a standard trapper any day of the week. Good call!
That is a fantastic collection. Thanks.
You have some real nice roughriders knifes .
Thank you and thanks for supporting my channel!
Not bad for cheap knives made in China.Nice collection.
Erik, there's a difference between a "cheap" knife and an "inexpensive" one. Rough Rider is NOT a cheap knife!
Awesome buy, as soon as I saw this started getn some myself, thank you for another great review
Great looking collection, Big congrats on winning them, :)
Thanks Rambler. I'm ptretty happy with it.
You’re quite right, where is the Barlow... the classic!
Slick Slicers, to me, the lack of a Scout knife and a Barlow was a big oversight! I’m thinking with Case pulling the Barlow out of the “vault” this year, Rough Ryder may add the Barlow to this line. I’d really like to see a scout knife added. Thanks for watching.
Knife Chats with Tobias though I turned a very slight shade of green, I enjoyed watching it very much, thank you!
@@slick_slicers. LOL.
Cool
You are a lucky man. I love carbon steel and yellow comp handles. I have the Doctors, the Sowbelly, and the Muskrat. It looks like I'm getting more!
I'm sold! I just ordered the RR Sleeve Board Whittler! Can't wait for it go get a patina! I agree with your idea of converting the longer pen blade into a coping/scribing/sheepsfoot blade.
Would love to hear your opinion of the knife once it arrives! Thanks for supporting my channel!
My RR Classic Carbon whittler arrived today and I was very pleased. If I had a complaint, it would be that it feels a little big to my hand. I don't have small hands, if anything a little larger than "normal," but I think if it were 3 3/8" .... a half inch shorter than it is now.... it would feel better, at least in MY hand. JMHO. I hope they come out with the same knife in bone scales.
Late to your party here but congrats on your knives, thanks for sharing these. I'm heading over to smkw to get a few.
Thanks. I'd love to hear your opinion of them! Thanks for watching!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias I wanted to respond to your request by saying I wholeheartedly agree that these Classic Carbons by RR are some of the Best knives for the money you can buy. I ended up buying seven of them over two months because I was more impressed at each purchase starting with the Canoe and Whittler. I used them in canoe camp this summer for basic chores and making a few utensils and things. And since I'm a fan of half-stops I felt at home with them immediately. One more thing I like is that they are a bit beefier than most traditionals and bigger which is better suited for these old hands. I give them 5 Paddles Up. LOL
Nice set
Thanks! and thanks for watching!
These are indeed nice knives for a bargain price. I wish they'd make a Barlow in carbon steel, with only one clip blade about 2-3/4" long.....3- 1/2" handle. That would be right down my alley because these knives have stiff back springs. I don't want a weak back spring, otherwise I prefer a lockback. But RR seems to be designing all these slipjoints with good, stiff back springs.
Good Call! A single blade Barlow or a Boys knife would be an excellent knife for the Classic Carbon Series. And both are very much classic traditional patterns!
Very interesting I didn’t know RR made a carbon knife. I love the trappers btw lol
Just looked for this on Amazon and they have it listed as being G10 instead of Micarta, they also list it for $52, you have to always keep an eye on Amazon because if you don't they will eventually screw you, this is a perfect example. This sell on my seller of choice SMKT for $16
woptucci yeah Hell wit AmAZon! Im LoyAl to SMKW! 100%🔪🔪jus ordered me an Edict, gerber. And a Case white sparxx toothpick. SWEET
Very cool
I want all of them….lol
I was going to get the Toothpick from Heinnie Hayes but saw a lot of bad reviews, I emailed Heinnie and asked if they could inspect one before sending out, they said yes so ordered, got email back to say after inspecting several they didn't have a good one to send, all had blade faults, you were lucky Tobias.
Your Are Right about Not Having The Grand-Daddy Barlow in The Collection also as Much I Don't Like The Lady Leg With This Collection You Need It it would be a crime not To Have One to complete The Collection.
Nice line up.Get em while there still affordable.
If it cuts, we've got bandages.
Loooveeee the toothpick!
You and me both! I've since picked up another one of the toothpicks. My favorite in the bunch! Thanks for watching!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias ohh wow! Someday ill get another one too ❤
great knife collection :) thanks
Nice video and collection sir.. You don't like trappers?! Says alot about your taste or lack of.....just funning, I like ALL patterns, just some more then others.i like the carbon and carbon II series alot.
I've done multiple videos on Trappers. The short version is I have more issues with the marketing of Trappers than I do the actual pattern itself.
Can I ask why you don't like trappers ?
gearhead1982, the knife itself is fine. I don’t like the history of how the knife came about and how it is over marketed. Plus I don’t care much for the secondary spay blade. That said, I can see why so many folks love it. It’s just not fo me.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias thanks for reply . Is it due to the trapping ? Skinning or castrating . Just curious now ?! I enjoy your videos keep them up life long knife fan I've only just now looked up the names history of my slip joints due to you . Stickman trapper Barlow lambs foot sheep foot etc
gearhead1982, oh no! If I had problems with Trapping, skinning , and/or castrating, then I’d have issues with about half of the traditional pattern knives out there. In fact, my favorite knife, the large toothpick was a knife designed for hunting, trapping, and skinning. And the Stockman, which I truly love, often has a castrating blade.
gearhead1982, I’ll be doing another video on the trapper soon but here is an earlier one: czcams.com/video/MJ37j-ipKNM/video.html
@@KnifeChatswithTobias ha good video
I know I'm 2 years late but the steel is T10 not 1070. 👍
they call the steel for these carbon knives T10
Aaron Morris, yes. I was first under the impression this was a 1070 equivalent but have since found out it is a Chinese steel more closely in line to 1095. Carbon steel.
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias Is T10 steel Good ?
@@magoolaush, i cannot give an extensive review of the steel as I have not used it much. Everything I've read says it is similar to 1095. I have had plenty of experience with 1095 and really enjoy it. I have also heard that it is similar to W1, water hardening steel also similar to 1095.
Most people say: T10 is basically the Chinese equivalent of our 1095, but it has silicon added as an alloying element to improve the steel's strength and wear resistance (edge-holding) properties. T10 blades can be tempered to a high hardness and hold an edge well. As with 1095, rust resistance is low, and T10 blades must be carefully maintained.
As with any steel it really depends on the heat treating. I know that T-10 is used in swords as well as fixed blades. If it is similar to the 1095 that I have used then I would say it's a decent steel. Camillus, Ontario, ESEE, and TOPS all use 1095 in most of their knives.
But as I said, I've had very little experience with it personally.
@@magoolaush T10 is simmilar to 1095 with a small amount of tungsten, the carbide forming tendencies of tungsten should make it very simmilar to W2 and a generally good steel so long as it has a decent heat treat.
Great review!! I now have the whittler on my purchase list. Will you produce a video on making the coping blade on the whittler?
The Case seahorse is on my list also.
Can you recommend a solid grip to choose from on the seahorse??
What do you mean by grip? Handle Material? If so Stag will be the most expensive but also the most sought after be collecyors. Case does an amazing jb with bone and stag... that's what I look for. But plenty swear by exotic woods. If you are looking for something for hard use and plan on putting the knife through some difficult paces, I'd suggest Delrin (Yellow composition) It wears well and is very durable. Plus they yellow delrin knives tend to have carbon steel (CV) blades. Hope that helps
@@KnifeChatswithTobias yes. i did mean handle material. Thanks for the advice
T10 carbon steel .Not 1095
robert stockton, you are correct, sir. I originally thought it was a 1070 equivalent but have since learned it is closer to 1095. But it is T10 and while it may be similar they are not the same.
I heard it called "1070" carbon steel, did I not?
Do they get pattina?
Do they patina
3 trappers😉
Would you be interested in selling the stockman? 😃
Case when bankrupt zippo owns case now.
Subbed
Thanks Blood Hound. Please check out my other content and if you like what you see, feel free to share!
No sowbelly? The trapper basically looked like a sowbelly
They also make a sowbelly.
@@tommytruth7595 what I was saying is that the video did not have a sowbelly. I know Rough Rider carry sowbelly they have dozens
