  • This is my method for making bowstrings. I'm using fake sinew, which is a shame, but at least it's cheap.
Real sinew works really well, but it's pricey if you buy it as string and it's labour intensive if you buy it raw, it also doesn't like rain. Linen and hemp also work well, they handle rain better, but they don't last as long as sinew.

I'm writing a novel where I want to include native American culture. Your videos are really inspirational. Keep it up.

Think nothing of it. It only cost me half an hour.

@@MalcolmPLWhat was the draw weight of the bow used in the video? How much weight can the string take?

I'm attempting to investigate my own tribe's crafts. Even though my tribe is of a different continent entirely, your videos really motivate me to keep digging for more information. Keep up the great work!

Material culture is important. It’s good to hear that people are reviving the old trades, regardless of where you’re from.

Pretty much what I do except I make my loop slide it on the top nock .while bending the bow upside down I wrap the loose end around the bottom nock, pass the loose end under this and wrap opposite direction, then tie it off. If it stretches while in use, I just unloop the top nock give it a few twists and reattach loop to top nock.

Yes, just unwind it until it’s loose.

Sinew or hemp are the best. Very strong and fast. But Sinew is no good in the wet and hemp requires periodic maintenance.
Linen is the next best, it’s like hemp but weaker.
Then fake sinew. It’s strong and low maintenance, but it’s a little sluggish.
      Leather cord is very sluggish.
Sisal and cotton are too weak for bow strings.
