  • I’ve had my F55 for 10 years now and wanted to showcase some of my favorite shots I’ve captured with it over those years. These collection of shots are mainly from the outdoor adventure work I’ve done.
    Hopefully this is a good indication of how a 10 year old camera holds up in todays camera world.

      True, but the people who swap bodies that often are doing so with prosumer grade cameras, not flagships. The F55 has been succeeded by the Venice and now Venice2 in the same time that a dozen options in the sub $5k range has been introduced.

    Hey Venture Films! So I bought an F55 and I'm so happy I did. I did some test shots using XAVC 480, and it's just stunning. To me it's up there with the Alexa Classic, perhaps slightly more digital looking, but I don't mean that in a bad way... It almost has a 3D feel to it. The image just pops, and I think it's totally unique. Another difference is that it's so small and light that's is still able to be a solo operator camera, while still being able to be a full production camera. It's really unique and I think it's the best and most overlooked camera right now for making films. Thank you for putting your amazing work on here to inspire me to take a chance on this beautiful camera!

    • @venture_films
      @venture_films  Před rokem +4

      Thanks!
      That's a tough one. I own and use alongside the F55 an FX6 and FX3. There's definitely features in the FX line that make it easier to obtain a 'nicer' looking image directly out of camera. Things like the ability to custom white balance in Cine EI mode, newer colour science, less noise on the new sensors etc are all terrific features that help with this. Saying that though I'm able to spend a bit of time in the grade with my work so I can get them matching pretty good. Having the option to record 16-bit linear RAW or even XAVC480 on the F55 combined with sacrificing a stop or so of highlight range for a cleaner SNR makes it a completive camera to hold up against the image quality of newer cams IMO.

    • @nicholaspitts9720

      @@venture_films Thanks a ton for the info! I have been trying to decide between the F55 (Which I have wanted for a long time) or a newer Sony camera, and I think this helped tip the scales. All this in combination with the fact that the F55 has a global shutter... F55 it is! (:

    • @venture_films
      @venture_films  Před rokem

      @@nicholaspitts9720 No problem!
      Image quality aside there’s probably some other things to consider as well. With the F55 being over a decade old now spare parts and repairs might start to be an issue. Also, compared to the more modern FX series navigating through menus and boot up times on the F55 are slow. When I turn on my FX6 it takes a few seconds and you’re ready to shoot - super fast. I try and avoid digging through menus to change settings and have created ‘all file’ recalls which can be accessed on the side screen of F55. I just select which mode I want (4K 25fps, 2K 240fps RAW etc) and the camera reboots into that mode. Still takes around 30 secs though.

    • @nicholaspitts9720
      @nicholaspitts9720 Před rokem +2

      @venture_films Makes a ton of sense. Even if the image was better in the F55 (which it's arguable both ways of course) it's definitely the more unwieldy choice for many reasons.
      Luckily, in my current situation, I am able to choose the older, slower, more hunky camera just because I like the image alone. (: but I agree it's definitely something one should consider. Thanks so much for the detailed info! And that's a great tip on the recording modes!

In my opinion it’s easier to get a more pleasing image straight out of the newer FX series line of cameras compared to the F55/5/FS7 etc. That’s not saying you can’t get great images from those older cameras but it might take a couple of extra steps (depending on lighting and the scene) to get similar results on the older cameras.

    Curious of your go-to lenses?

      The Canon 30-105 cinema zoom pretty much lives on this camera now. If I need wide on the F55 I’ll use the Tokina 16-28 Mk2 cinema zoom 👍🏼

    Hi, what wonderful work!
    I have the possibility of acquiring a complete FS7 with its raw interface, the complete AXS-R5 cine alta recorder and an AXS-512S24 card all for $2300, is this a good opportunity?
    Do you think that with the FS7 I can get closer to the quality of your images (even if it only films in 12 bit and rolling shutter)?
    Best regards ;)

      Hi Pj,
      That’s a great price for a kit like that. I find the FS7 sensor a bit noisier then the F55’s but saying that I’ve seen some amazing work produced with those cameras. They’re super popular. You’ll be able to get some great images on it 👍🏼

      @@venture_films Good evening,
      Good evening,
      I'm coming back to you because I've finally made the decision, the f55 is too heavy for documentary, so I bought a Sony FS7+ Raw extension unit for a total of $2000 (Sony FS7+AXS R5+ HXR-IFR5, + 512 GB card + card reader)
      For the moment I'm still missing an xdca fs7 extension that I'm looking for for around $200 to use 12 bit Raw.
      While waiting to find it, I am currently stuck with the xavc 4.2.2 10 bit format, do you think that with a good exposure of the s-log and a clean calibration, I could get closer to your results with this compressed format ?
      Regards ;)

      @@pjworkinprogress Hi there,
      Good to hear you got the FS7.
      Absolutely. The FS7 is capable of great images when shooting internal XAVC. I’d personally rate the camera at a lower ISO in CineEI mode so you’re shooting at least one stop brighter though. Correct the exposure shift in post and you’ll have a cleaner image to work with 👍🏼
      Most of the reel above was shot in XAVC.

      @@venture_films Thank you for your advice, so if I understood well with my beginner English.
      Do you advise me to overexpose my image in cine-EI with an additional diaphragm (stop) to have more information which I then correct?
      When I was working on the Sony a7sii, I was working with one or two more stops to limit the image noise on s-log3 and "limit the banding of 4.2.0 8bit"
      Regards.

    Are there any specific things this camera does better than, lets say, an FX6 & FX9?

    • @venture_films
      @venture_films  Před rokem +2

      I’m a fan of the XAVC 480 codec and the 16-bit linear RAW the F55 can do. The FX6/9 can only do up to XAVC 300. Saying that though there’s definitely an improvement in the sensor tech of the newer FX series cams so you can push that XAVC 300 codec further then you could with XAVC 300 on the F55.
      There’s certain visual traits in the F55 image that I like more then my FX6 but they’re only subtle things that most people really wouldn’t notice. I still use my F55 alongside my FX6 and FX3 on pretty much all my shoots.

    Very nice!!! We already own one for one year now... We have the pictorzoom DZO lenses on it... Which lenses did you use with the shots?
    Looking forward to your reaction! :)

      Thanks Robert ☺️
      The main lens used on these shots was the Canon 30-105 Cine zoom. Other lenses used throughout the video would have been Zeiss CP.2’s, Tokina 16-28 Cine zoom and a Sigma 150-600.
