Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on CZcams. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

I've never heard this song (or band) before and I am just as shocked.
Malina is an album that deserves full album review from you!
Leprous is awesome. Baard is a beast of a drummer. Check out "The Price" or "Rewind". They have a cello player on stage for the last few years.
Discovered this band earlier this year. They are the only other band on the level of Tool I've heard. More Leprous!
Wonderful reaction - one of my favorite songs of last year! Love it when it gets appreciated as much as you did.
This song sounds like the apocalypse, I get chills every time!
This whole album is very cinematic!
This song definitely took me a few spins to fully appreciate, and I highly recommend watching their drum playthrough with their drummer Baard Kolstad, because seeing his parts really made me appreciate it even more!
I would love to watch you reacting to more Leprous songs. c: Awesome.
I like your thoughts about the rising up from a damaged state for the later cello sections. I didn't think of it that way before but it definitely matches that idea. I had always thought of it like a demented state, because it has a horror film like sound to it - discordant and displeasing - yet pleasing simply because of how unique and engaging it is to hear the strange sounds in music. This also matches, as I believe the song is about a state of being filled with anger.
Love that you love this incredible band! Try the song Forced Entry for a different epic side (why not the live-version from Rockefeller 😊)
Thank you! Would live to hear your comment about Haken-Architect
Even though I'm still hoping for my first patreon react request soon, perhaps my second one will be Acquired Taste by Leprous, unless you get in a Leprous mood and react to it yourself :) You'll be in awe of that one as well.
They are unique and usually have a dark vibe. Love their stuff. They do have a lot of cello in the most recent album and he performs live with them.
Gotta be the song of the year. As others have said the drum playthrough of this is next level incredible. Definitely check it out in your own time if you don't plan on doing a video for it down the track. Also, obligatory Cog request while I'm at it (sorry). The songs "Doors", "Real Life" or "The Spine" would be a good place to start imo, but anything off "The New Normal" album really :)
Heard this a few weeks ago. Great song, great band!! My newest trend with finding prog bands is immediately looking for their longer songs because they seem to be the most dynamic, haha.
Now that you're convinced that Leprous can really make you feel, I have to recommend Leprous - Slave (Live at Rockefeller Hall)
Amazing song! Stuff that would be cool to see you react to, and that I think you might like: Anekdoten - Book of Hours, Ihsahn - Arcana Imperii (yeah, that's the brother in law of the singer in Leprous), Enslaved - Feathers of Eohl... and would be really cool to see you check out Ulver! They're a not generally a prog band though, though since 1993 they have morphed through folkloristic black metal, neo-folk, jazzy trip-hop, ambient, soundtrack music, psychedelic rock covers plus much more before setting on dark synth pop for their more recent albums. So they are very progressively minded! They have a very maximalist record called Blood Inside from 2005 that should fit a prog/art rock bill. I would recommend the song Christmas of that record! Stunningly unique.
Loved the whole reaction, i'm also a big Leprous fan and you match my reactions haha.
Explore some more Devin Townsend if you want some uniqueness, especially the Empath album
