- Bob plays "Where Are You Tonight" at the Charlotte Coliseum on December 10th, 1978. Not the best quality, but an interesting take on a song he rarely did live.
- Jak na to + styl
This song is a flat out overlooked masterpiece. Dylan has about 30 more that fit that category. His biggest competition is his own legacy.
If another artist wrote and recorded them, he too would be in the Hall of Fame and considered a genius.
Love it
We saw him in Nurenburg Germany promoting this album in 1978. Eric Clapton was the opening act. Dylan was really something else. What a day that was.
A song that clearly defines why Bob won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The lyrics are astounding.
Totally underrated album. This track is the best of many great ones.
Am I the only hardened dylanfreak who likes this more than any other album?!
+Michael Godfrey Only Dylan album I own from record store in Asheville, NC in 1978. My favorite
It just had the bad fortune of coming behind Blood on the Tracks... Very strong album
Sean h true ... damn it was an amazing sequence because Desire was (mostly) brilliant too
Yes, that would be you and you alone bathed in a stream of pure heat.
I had no idea he ever played this live - awesome. The best track on Street Legal, by far, and one of Dylan's best deep tracks.
"And I bit into the root of forbidden fruit, till the juice ran down my legs."..brilliant, just brilliant...
I love the way he just keeps going, like stuffing eight more syllables in is just fine... and he pulls it off. The musical world never ceases to amaze me as far as the unbelievable variations in human ability... DAMN, I love CZcams and the shit I find here...
This song is a secret gateway to another dimension, allowing you to escape this sad world. It's like, I don''t know how this is allowed by the Creator...
Really heavy s***
One of Dylan's forgotten masterpieces .....
Except by us...
I think this is one of greatest songs the ending is so intense
I totally agree, song is great, and Guitar solo unbelievable!
Why this album was panned by the critics of the time I have no idea. I remember buying it when it came out and love it straight away still love it now. No one could do what Dylan did ever changing never standing still . He is a giant of an artist so unique and a lyricist of the highest order.
fuckin amazing, magical Dylan...
Street Legal - My fave Dylan album! Bring on the box set of outtakes!
Street Legal and Slow Train Coming, very special albums to me. It's by these two I first discovered and got completely head to heels in love with Bob, I was thirteen then. Now I am fifty-three, and I love him just the same.
"There's a white diamond gloom on the dark side of this room, and a pathway that leads up to the stars..." --just awesome!
Saw this live 12/7/78....loved this whole album...some people were disappointed because he wasn't doing acoustic and harmonica type songs....we loved it....one of my top memories of my teen years...NEW PONY...TRUE LOVE TENDS TO FORGET...SENOIR...WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT...all great songs
myfavourite dylan song...art genius icon god
I got into Dylan around 2007-2008, when I was in my mid-20s, and I swear back then it seemed like this album was universally hated. I’m glad to see now that so many people also love this album. Dylan has so many good albums and songs, but as far as an album front to back I think this is the one I’ve played most over the years.
One of my favorits , a masterpice
1978 was Dylan's best year, in my not-so-humble opinion. Between this highly under-rated album and the subsequent big-band tour, he once again achieved that " thin mercury sound" shown on BOB.
Absolutely agree. I saw the tour and was struck by the same thing. That band was so tight. Loved the three singers, who Dylan introduced as "my wife, my girlfriend and my mistress"
My first Dylan album.....Very much overlooked in my oppinion...This is a class song.
Though not the best quality, Bob shines through, emotionally strong...just mind-blowing like so many.
I can't believe it.
I can't believe I'm still alive
+Sharon Holland~~ but w/o U~~it just doesn't seem right~~
+Elna Copper But the price... lemme show you the scars.
Ain't it true, E.C.?
If they don't believe there's a price, for this sweet paradise, just invite me...
Hey hey hey!
Me neither im 162 😂
there,ll never be another Bob Dylan
Tremendous song
one of bobs top ten. for sure. he should've stayed where his money was green...
Heavy Dylan moment, this is heavy song, man. Good guitar solo at the end
This album got me through 2014.
Yeah, but what got you through 2020?
@@MrThermostatic It got me through October-November 2021
Got me through 1978.
My second favorite Dylan album (Infidels is #1). Very underappreciated and overlooked album. This is perhaps one of the best from Streer Legal. A stellar album.
🃏🧠
Absolutely blows me away that track, why on earth does he not play it live.
Excellent. Hello there, thank you for posting this track. It is included inside Bob Dylan's Music Box (search for The Bob Dylan Project) Come and join us inside and listen to every song composed, recorded or performed by Bob Dylan, plus all the great covers streaming on CZcams, Spotify, Deezer and SoundCloud.
One of top Bob songs ever !! two chord verbal groove
Love this performance. One of the best tracks of a gem of an album.
The juice is running down my leg.
Dylandude, big thanks for providing the musical time machine to autumn '78. Much obliged.
Street Legal my fave as well! First witnessed him, as an impressionable 16yrold, in June78 on tour feat.Street Legal tracks I'll always believe this "full band sound (horns,keys+b3,bkgrd chorus,et al) with such high-passion performances from Bob will be my fave era Dylan. Though being a Dylanophile you can't ever have any bad Bob.
Rips through my soul, lived this.
every sentence, a galaxy explodes..............
Trvth!...
they don't make singers like Dylan any more these days. please God keep him safe and Bless him with many more years.
Janis, Singapore
Pray for your family not some man ya don't know. Prick
Fantastic!!!
🎶🎶🎶🎼🎼⭐️⭐️❤️🎸🎸🏆
This is even better than the album version, and that's saying something, because it's from one of my very favourite Dylan records, and mostly still underrated to this day in spite of Street Legal being one of his finest works.
agree.
I completely agree, I find Dylan's best work was always kept in the shadows. If any other artist released this it would be hailed the greatest thing since dylan... lol
So agree, Iain...one of the most soulful pained love songs, apparently to Sara... this along with True Love Tends to Forget and We Better Talk This Over captures the hopeful but tortured longing of married love and estrangement...then there is the enigmatic imagery of Changing of the Guard...Bobby is the best!
Brian - It's probbably my favourite Dylan album, though I'd say Blonde on Blonde is his best.
Agree on that....here in Red Bank NJ there is a Bobfest every May and last year thehouse band (*The Tired Horses) performed the whole album for its 50th anniversary - pretty cool
Absolutely love this
Wot a song! Love u
This album is criminally underrated. Out of all the great tracks on this one, the only one you ever hear about is 'Changing of the Guard.' As good as that one is, the rest of them are just as good or better.
Then again, I'm one of the few people who honestly enjoys *Budokan* so I guess I'm in the minority of Dylan fans.
Thanks for sharing. I was there too...
when il was young ,il always dreamed to see one bob singing in front of me il love triste great man
Even better than the studio version!
YEAH BOB HONEY YOU AND YOUR BAND ARE THE BEST KISS KISS
Yep. There's a lion on the road, there's a demon escaped... It's finally final, people: '78 is Dylan's top-year. What a powerful song this is guys!
Would love a copy of this bootleg! Love Dylan to bits!
I wish someone would upload the original....
Epic, torch ballad
excellent - thanx
I love this song!
So great thank you!!!
I took dead center aim, but I missed just the same
I just love street legal album BOB sounds great thanks
right here where i was before
Wow! Thanks for this upload. Most under rated album. Love it. Have been looking for live stuff off Street Legal.
Thanks!!!
Look for the bootleg "Border Beneath the Sun." Grooveshark has some of it for free.
Alas, may the shark rest in peace (and groove on in the vast ocean in the sky)
i fought with my twin .. that enemy within>>>>
so cool expression >
I'm a Gemini, so...yep...
great to hear a strong live version of this cheers
If someone were to rate Dylan's sexiest album covers, Street Legal would have to be in the top 5!!!
There’s a new day at dawn and I’ve finally arrived, if I’m there in the morning baby you’ll know I’ve survived, I can’t believe I can’t believe I’m alive but without you it just doesn’t seem right, oh where are you tonight?
Very good Bob Dylan
I see everyone agrees with me. One of my favorites from one of his most overlooked albums. That, and Infidels.
Bobby's a gemini (same day as queen victoria). 'i fought w/ my twin...'
great song and lyric.
PCN023 me too....I fight with my twin, that enemy within
Gemini Cricket
left town at dawn with 2 strong men

hes was on a spiritual journey
and about to oay the price for this sweet paradise...being alive
Aha!....I was just commenting about that....That's right...He is....
I was there with some great friends.
oh, if i could just find you tonight..................
I want this man
Seen 3 out of 5 live shows @ MSG. Street Legal was the best work of all. Even better live.
As she winds back the clock and turns back the page of a book that nobody can write, oh, where are you tonight.
"If you don’t believe there’s a price for this sweet paradise
Remind me to show you the scars"....
"The truth was obscure, too profound and too pure
To live it you have to explode......
But he should-a stayed where his money was green."
the eternal question...
good post
thank you!
BRAVO
Thx gorgeous X
Street Legal was a very good album, but I would have loved to hear Bob + The BAND record it. I know,I know.
There's a white diamond gloom on the dark side of this room and a pathway that leads up to the stars...
There's a long-distance train rolling through the rain, tears on the letter I write
There's a woman I long to touch and I miss her so much but she's drifting like a
Satellite. There's a neon light ablaze in this green smoky haze, laughter down on Elizabeth Street
And a lonesome bell tone in that valley of stone where she bathed in a stream of pure
Heat. Her father would emphasize you got to be more than street-wise but he practiced
What he preached from the heart
A full-blooded Cherokee, he predicted to me the time and the place that the trouble would start
There's a babe in the arms of a woman in a rage
And a longtime golden-haired stripper onstage
And she winds back the clock and she turns back the page
Of a book that no one can write
Oh, where are you tonight?
The truth was obscure, too profound and too pure, to live it you have to explode
In that last hour of need, we entirely agreed, sacrifice was the code of the road
I left town at dawn, with Marcel and St. John, strong men belittled by doubt
I couldn't tell her what my private thoughts were but she had some way of finding
Them out. He took dead-center aim but he missed just the same, she was waiting
Putting flowers on the shelf
She could feel my despair as I climbed up her hair and discovered her invisible self
There's a lion in the road, there's a demon escaped
There's a million dreams gone, there's a landscape being raped
As her beauty fades and I watch her undrape
I won't, but then again, maybe I might
Oh, if I could just find you tonight
I fought with my twin, that enemy within, 'til both of us fell by the way
Horseplay and disease is killing me by degrees while the law looks the other way
Our partners in crime hit me up for nickels and dimes, the guy you were lovin' couldn't stay clean
It felt outta place, my foot in his face, but he should-a stayed where his money was green
I bit into the root of forbidden fruit with the juice running down my leg
Then I dealt with your boss, who'd never known about loss and who always was too proud to beg
There's a white diamond gloom on the dark side of this room and a pathway that leads up to the stars
If you don't believe there's a price for this sweet paradise, remind me to show you the scars
There's a new day at dawn and I've finally arrived
If I'm there in the morning, baby, you'll know I've survived
I can't believe it, I can't believe I'm alive
But without you it just doesn't seem right
Oh, where are you tonight?
"。゚remind me to show U the scars "。゚
this is not from Charlotte, it's Columbia 1978, for those who don't know
A+++
Where are we? "Eden is Burning/Either get ready for elimination/Or your hearts must bear the Courage for The Changing of the Guards...Peace Will Come... !
Where do you think?
Gentleman he said... I moved your mountains and marked your cards....Speaking truth to Power...
Indeed, an (audio)- item rarely captured live, for the record.
Thanks
In my head
"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M ALIVE!"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
great picture on the album. Bob out waiting on someone or something? title fits so well. the lyrics if u listen to senior have that biblical feel and only slow train coming sounds better as far as his voice strength. each syllable brings the song its strength and Bob was somewhat lazy at times on recording and the process in general from 78/81 was him singing better then anytime since 65/66
Hi I personally believe 75/76 was a career peak singing wise although .I think 1981 was the last year he was anywhere his near his best vocally
I agree this is from an under rated album. I think the 78 tour was a bit of a negative impact on this album. It was another version of Dylan and no this best but I do think the album stands strong - this track especially.
+Stewart Roberts This song is awesome...........I missed the album, but glad I found this amazing track - looking for better sound ...................love it, love him! cheers
This , and "Changing of the guards" gave advance warning of his re-birth
Can hear that he based the melody on ‘like a rolling stone’ in this version
Street Legal is strictly legit!
There's a neon light ablaze in the green smoky haze
And laughter down on Elizabeth Street
There's a lonesome bell tone in that valley of stone
Where she bathed in a stream of pure heat
♥♥♥
well done
From Rolling Stone - "The 10 Best Bob Dylan Bootlegs" The definitive tour recordings from every era of Dylan's career by By Andy Greene, May 10, 2011
Charlotte, 12/10/78
"Few eras of Bob Dylan’s live career have a worse reputation than the 1978 tour. Backed by an 11-piece band, the show featured radically rearranged versions of Dylan’s greatest hits - with lots of saxophone and back-up singers. Just weeks into the tour Columbia taped Bob Dylan At Budokan, which was originally only supposed to come out in Japan. Cringe-worthy, slick versions of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Blowin' In The Wind" sullied Dylan’s reputation as a live performer for years to come, but when the tour came to America many months later it finally hit a groove. By this point Dylan was playing songs from Street Legal, which was recorded with his touring band. Unlike most of his catalog, these tracks were actually enhanced by the big band. On this tape from Charlotte, Dylan is on fire as the band plays killer versions of Street Legal tracks "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)," "We Better Talk This Over" and "Changing of the Guards." With the exception of "Señor," he’d play virtually nothing from the drastically underrated Street Legal over the next three decades." www.rollingstone.com/music/news/the-10-best-bob-dylan-bootlegs-20110511
That's how you do it....
where are you tonight
hey hey hey
