- When you look at Carlo Ponti's wikipedia he also produced many great films including Doctor Zhivago which was directed by David Lean but produced by Carlo Ponti. I think she choose right with Carlo Ponti because although they suffered as a couple their love, partnership, collaboration lasted decades and gave Sophia Loren two sons, grandchildren, fame, wealth, and respect among her peers with two Academy Awards. She did good.
Sophia once said that Carlo Ponti understood that the body also has a brain and a heart. That sums up the man and his love and respect for her. Would she have felt as “ protected “ with Cary? Who knows, but it reminds me of Anne Margret and her love for Elvis. Like Cary, Elvis was an idol. Roger Smith, Anne Margrets future husband was going to “ protect” her. An understandable attitude from both ladies. They were both aware of the fragility of fame.
There was one part where Barbara asked her if she felt beautiful. She said some days I do, and some days I don't. She was so honest and uncensored. Another beautiful woman without a father like Marilyn Monroe…hmmm 14, I have a niece that is 14. This is why girls need a father or a bada55 grandfather ;)
Her answer about Carry Grant is so honest, it just shows that she is real. Just an honest woman who had a terrific talent aside from astounding beauty.
I'm surprised she picked the other guy just because he was Italian. But I guess if you were torn between two people maybe that's enough to give the edge to one suitor over another.

She could have chosen ANY man: she was beautiful, she was talented. But she understood that marriage exists not only thanks to love. Imo, her marriage to Grant wouldn't have lasted for 50 years for sure.
