As a fiddle player, I have trouble playing in A flat and F sharp because of no open strings. I alway tell people that ask me why I don’t play in those keys and my response is “if I could play in those keys without tuning up a half step, I would not be playing these circuit bar gigs, I’d be touring. “
Yes, I’m a fiddler and a crapshooter. Love fiddling and the game of craps.
And love the great Bobby Hicks.
I sure do miss Johnny Cash 😞
Dave mentioned Brian Farmer in a past story. Brian became Warren Haynes guitar tech. He was beloved by Mule fans for his kindness and his lovely ways. His untimely passing is still mourned.
Got to love the man in black
I just love these unknown (to me) stories about some of my heroes of real country! Y'all do an awesome job of telling them, & thank you Otis for producing them!❤
hahaha, no capo for an upright bass
Love it! I hope he has some more stories about Johnny to share!
Love to hear this story and guy all day thanks Otis Gibbs Awesome 👌
Less cowbell, more Dave!!! Great storyteller. Thank you.
Too funny!! I can actually imagine his face when he said it.
😂😂 Well God bless Johnny and God bless Dave! It’s like Johnny saw an opportunity to expand Dave’s experience musically and knew he’d be better for it. That’s a cool story!
Hilarious! It's not always easy being a sideman. Dave Roe is one of the best!
I love these Johnny Cash stories. I can't wait for the next one
Stupid question? Um...do they have capos for the big bass and violins and orchestra instruments?
Yes, for all but the upright Bass, you need that, and best bet is to use an Acoustic bass with a bass guitar capo.
The singer is always right!
I really enjoy these stories.
Dave is making this look easy but I know I would be lost on the upright.
I'm thinkin' of tryin' my best at someway, somehow comin' up with all the materials it'd take to make up, or probably have to Jerry-Rig a new fangled invention called a "Stand Up Bass Fiddle Capo". I do reckon it can be done. Yes indeed!
It would probably be best made in a much larger version of the very old 40's, 50's and 60's Elastic Double Strap Capo with several metal ring holes at the end of the elastic strap that you can stretch to hook the right amount of tension onto the tip-end of the metal bar, with hard plastic or rubber covering the bar that rides over the strings on the Fingerboard.
It'd be a "Jumbo Elastic Strap Bass Fiddle Capo"! It's possible.
I declare the Patent Pending, right here, right now and you all are my witnesses. That is, unless'n one of you steal my Thought Patent from me? Don't do that now, eh?😁
Boy, I'd hate to have that slip out of my hand while stretching it.
I had a couple of 12string guitar elastic capos back in the late 60's. Found out they not only worked on 12 string guitars , but they also worked on my Silver tone ( Danelectro copy ) electric bass.
My folkie friends called it my "hillbilly crutch" . Learn 4 chords and play in any key.

That's a great term for a capo: "Hillbilly Crutch"
🤣😅😆😅🤣
Dave, in addition to being a master musician and what seems like a great human being, should have been in every western made from about 1985 on. He should have been the Strother Martin/LQ Jones for the last 35 years
That’s a great story! Thank you Dave and Otis for sharing that.
Priceless.Keep Dave on tap!!!
I wouldn’t be either - it’s a great song that’s hard to mess up.

Thank you Otis!
Great interview! R.I.P. Dave!
G to A flat ?heck couldn't ya just tune it
up a half step , no? good story tho keep on rockin and rollin guys
Great story I'm rollin over here 🤣
My Pops went to the Louisiana Hayride in the late 50s and saw Elvis, Johnny and all the new upstarts. He went to Mr. Cashs house and this long black limo is coming down the drive. He said it stopped and the window rolled down and he sticks his hand out and said Im Johnny Cash from Dice Arkansas my Pops said Im Homer from Oklahoma. Pops took us to see the Hwymen before my brother had to go do a stint in the joint, again.
That was a gooder, lol.
My dad's cousin played drums for Johny his name was John Rygg
Great story and demo! Thanks
Haha! Great story!😂👍

That’s so funny.

Awesome!!!
Great story!
Hmmmm. Never seen a capo on an upright I guess.
Thanks
Get a giant capo on that beast
I'm missin' somethin' in the end of the story, Dave? Sorry, for being a little slow on the pick up or the transposing/ translation?
When you showed Johnny the difference between playin' Slap Bass in the Key of G, (with the open strings and how easier it is to play it that way, as well as it soundin' better too); compared to havin' to play it in the Key of Ab (with no open strings to sustain and just not sounding the same, plus being a bit harder to play in Ab). Then Johnny said, "That's harder for you to play it that way, isn't it? I'm really not concerned with that Dave"!🤔
Are you then sayin' in the end that Johnny was Okay with goin' back to the old way of playing it in the
Key of G? Or, it makes no difference, no mind, no how. "I'm not concerned about what you showed me, Just play it in Ab, Dave."???
Just wonderin' is all? Since you said it helped you to progress better on the Stand Up Bass, then Ab seems to be the way it changed to and you had to put up with playin' it in Ab and that was that?
A little poetry rhyming there!😁
As far as I know Johnny just didn't really care, so they still played Ring of Fire in Ab from that moment on. You know, as nice as Johnny Cash was, if he says you play in Ab you play in Ab... 😂
It's a dryly humorous story of Cash saying, in essence, "I hear you and it makes no difference to me whether is is harder for you. I'm the leader. Play it my way." But the way Cash pulled Dave into a discussion about it, like he was really considering, makes it funny. And Dave is also laughing at himself for ever thanking that maybe it should matter. It's dry, but it's hilarious.
All musicians gotta learn to make big adjustments / Real Quick.... I did...
Thank you, Otis 🙏
Sounds like Johnny's way of saying "that's not my problem"
Great story, and I appreciate the demo! I've thought about switching over to upright bass, just have a lack of space to store such things currently
Be good to you 🤍💛
LOL!!
💖
tune it up?
🤣🎶🎶
I guess it's a musicians joke
