    I spent over 6 months on the DNA and guitar infusion course . They were the most helpful training tools I've ever come across and my playing progressed more in that 6 months than the previous 30 years . I would definitely recommend them

    I’m a Graduate of Berklee and received a BMUS degree. Even though I know a lot .. I know that I can learn from most players. You in particular give me interesting ideas. I play lead by singing what I’m going to play in my head before I play it. I’ve forgotten more than most will learn . ( I’m not being arrogant ).My knowledge ( Tools ) lets me solo in a way that most jazz musicians do. There’s no way to solo and think about the chord that your going to play over next. You can do that if you get the lead sheet upfront and have time with it.! I mostly use my ears, then the muscle memory kicks in and from the thousands of hours practicing Scales, modes, arpeggios, intervals ( some call them double stops ) , triads all over the neck in every inversion and upper structure chords, all combined in the solo. Once you have the tools , you’ll be able to use them and hear where they should go. I also use passing tones and little bits that I’ve found to work over the years.
    A great exercise is to turn on the TV and solo over the music being played . Another good trick that I’ve learned, from John McLaughlin , is to practice these boring scales , modes , arpeggios,etc. while watching TV. It’s less pain and stress on your brain.
    Remember that half of learning is muscle memory. If you think that you’ll play any thing on the guitar without
    your fingers being tied to your brain , you’ll be mighty disappointed. You'll practice and probably not see any improvement for a day. The tying of your brain and muscle memory , happens without you even thinking about it. Your brain takes care of that after you’ve practiced. Listening and trying to play other’s solos really helps too. You’ll get ideas that you may not have thought of . The same way David’s ideas do for me .....

    Nice mental break to clear the clutter around rut playing. What I appreciated most from this is that you didn't denigrate any of the "levels". I desperately try to do more story telling--vocalizing with strings--but in mere seconds I am again pulled pell-mell into scalular riffing. Though I thoroughly enjoy it, it is not my plan or desired path. I've always said the only different between a rut and a grave are the dimensions--and you can crawl out of a rut. But it seems my rut is a wet mudslide and my attempt to remove myself are less easy that I might have thought. But I persist--and you my friend, Rock! Stay Well. (And I wish you success in your attempt to break free, as well. I guess they say the first step is to acknowledge you have a problem.)

    I’m a mix of several, though only mediocre at any, and signed up for your course so I can broaden my knowledge of what I can do with each type. Knowing 20 licks is better than one. Knowing all the modes is better than being stuck in one. Knowing how to compose songs with lots of chord structures will be helpful in getting out of the traditional box. I just finished lesson 5 on the Ionian and Aeolian modes so my mind is still overwhelmed at this point, but the increased knowledge is coming quickly, so thank you!

  • @eddiedoyle3607
    @eddiedoyle3607 Pƙed 3 lety

    Hi David , it’s me again , I am intrigued by this video , I never thought about this , and I don’t really know which type I fall into ? Definitely not the story teller ! Maybe there is a 5th type ? My first influence was tony iommi , so you have a lot of pentatonic in there with an occasional deviation of adding in additional notes , usually notes that would indicate both aeolian and Dorian , also the narrow and hectic vibrato , which differs so much from say a blues vibrato , lots of sliding , and of course those insane trills iommi did , I found out after a couple years of trying to emulate him that I didn’t have prosthetic fingers ! Which I believe was his secret to being able to trill that fast , and that much , however , about the same time I discovered iommi , I heard a Frank Zappa record , and that got me , so I had 2 influences , Zappa and iommi ! Can you think of any combination that is more opposite ? And at that time I discovered that Zappa was an improvisational player , and I said : improvisation ? What the heck is that ? But it interested me so much , so I became an improvisational player , also I started leaning a lot more towards Zappa as my influence than iommi , Zappa used vibrato very sparingly , in other words , he phrased on a lot of static notes , I found that to be even more challenging than vibratoing , in this way it took a lot more theoretical study in order to make sure that when I stopped on any note , in static , that the note sounded good , or implied the feel I was going for , and I find that it is easier to do that by vibratoing , also I broke many so called rules , so the combination of all these factors , and more , made it possible for me to improv over just about any king of backing , in many cases I was asked to either play live , or record in studio , because most players couldn’t understand how to play over a lot of backings that I had the knowledge to play over , if you heard me , you may or may not like the way I play , so given all this info , what kind of player am I ? Thank you !

    I'm a mix of all of them but the mental player. I'd add a 5th type, the weirdo. I'm inspired by Trey Azagoth of Morbid Angel and Piggy of Voivod, two completely out there and dissonant players that play weird stuff and the best wrong notes. I feel I'm missing some of the mental player attributes to know a little more about what I'm doing and how to mess with it. Also having more of the mental player would help me reproduce the weird stuff I'm doing.

    David, is the storytelling the melody line? I know different ways to make a melody. Mix the scales & chord tones together, going step by step intervals & skipping intervals is like 2 different things together. 1) scale exploring 2) theory. Is the melody the story line though?

    Im definately the story teller and mental player. However thats why I can get frustrated as my notes and phrases can be very samey not in licks but as in you go after specific notes that sound comfortable which isnt always a good thing. Also I can really struggle at times to gel with other players, that can be a big downside and being thrown into a situation without some preperation can be hard for me too.
