Ohh Wedge.. When you started to talk about Black, it reminded me of a truly BLACK card and a awesome flavor text.
Card: Kaervek's Spite
"The end justifies the means.
What do I care if I rule over the dead rather than over the living?
The dead ask fewer questions."
- Kaervek
This has to be one of the flavor texts that best describes the color Black.
i think the flavour text on Dark Confident sums it up more tbh
"Greatness at any cost"
What they have in common and why the are together in the pentagon thingy:
White: Life, civilization
Blue: Civilization, mind
Black: Mind, destruction
Red: Destruction, fury
Green: Fury, life
The cycle
Instead of fury, the link between R and G I'd pick is freedom. Sure you can say green's huge creatures are trampling all over the place, but fury doesn't suit green's philosophy and goals.
Red is emotion and chaos, Black is selfish and aware, and white is exclusive &protective.
By the way blue doesn't have anithing to do with civilazation. But uses control.
Noice
@@vario6492 Actually, you are right. Or maybe instinct.
Now that we have the basic understanding of the color pie for all the new magic players or people who didnt know about it. I think the next logical step would be to progress to the guilds of Ravnica and explain how the color pie identifies each guild, their goals, and their methods. But that may just be me personally. I would still like to see it.
I agreeee
+Sergeant Cyndaquil yessss
+Sergeant Cyndaquil I like this :)
+Sergeant Cyndaquil I agree. Rarely are people's personalities/preferences mono-colored.
+Sergeant Cyndaquil The thing a lot of people forget is that the guilds are not the only way to see those colour combos.
I'd really like to see a similar video on guilds. Shards. Clans. Wedges(whatever they were back in invasion or when)
We already got a Wedge featured in every video!
+Ashton Withers Buh dum chhhh
+Lethal Pigeon Yes please!
Do it wedge!
especially about guilds, please
I love the color pie! It's one of the things that hooked me into Magic. I love that symbolism and the layers that are created with it. There was a lot of thought put into the creation of the most basic aspect of the game. It can go undetected by some, but adds such depth to those who understand.
And now that we have a grasp on the colors, the next logical step is to combine them. White is order, which is done through control, guilt, power, or unity depending on which guild leader you talk to. Green and red share instinctive actions, but the Temur blends it with blue not for the logic but the elements of water, air, and ice. How the guilds, shards, and clans combine the color identities into a new one is equally fascinating. I'm hoping we see a discussion on the guilds next. This can easily be another 4 videos if you split the guilds into ally and enemy pairs.
How you doing 6 years later?

+Noah Daglio Magic: wont you join us?
Simic for LIFE!
+Noah Daglio Dimir: My Secrets, My Strategy, My guild. IT'S MILLER TIME!!
+Sanketh Bhaskar (S3) yes My Vision, My Evolution, my Guild.
My vision, My evolution, My guild.
Cool. Where's that from?
Color...less... very important color, and my favorite.
They are in the middle
Eldrazi?
Interestingly enough, “colorless” isn’t actually a color. I didn’t actually know this until I had both Katilda, Dawnheart Prime and Bloodline Pretender on the battlefield in MTGA. Katilda gives Humans you control “Tap to add 1 mana of this creature’s colors.” Bloodline Pretender has Changeling, so it’s a human. I THOUGHT I could tap it to add 1 colorless mana, but NOPE. I instead tapped it, used the ability, and it had no effect whatsoever.
I absolutely love playing black, by far my favorite color in Magic
same
@@hungrydino51 whatever happened to Wedge? Seeing your comment reminded me how I used to watch his videos and I see he's done nothing for a while. Its weird.
@@jayjayson9613 I dunno man I only recently got back into mtg I dont really follow the online community...
I like the colour pie. A friend and I sometimes pass time by sorting fictional characters into colour identities.
Most real life people are penta colour.
That said, when it comes to playing Magic? I am a red mage.
+Haradion Drogon i find it hard to categorize myself with one color. as far as the game goes, i'd say i'm grixis (blue, red, black). i'm not a fan of how reckless black is, how slow blue is, or the lack of staying power with red, but i find that these colors make up for each other's weaknesses.
+Haradion Drogon Mark rosewater says most fictional characters (so far as I know he doesn't do this to real people) are multi color unless they are made to fit into one color. Although to see how people align is always interesting.
It's nice to know I'm not the only weirdo who does this lol
When the guy who is the currently the closest thing to the single guy who 'makes magic' does it, you're in good hands.
I believe I've heard Mark Rosewater and many players say that what defines a person as certain colors of the pie isn't what they are necessarily, but why they value. For example, a person being particularly intelligent does not make them blue, but a person putting a high value on knowledge and the pursuit of it does.
As a real life example, I myself envision the perfect world as being one where all people can live in harmony with one another and with the world around them while championing self expression and the advancement of science, education and medicine. A world without greed and ruthlessness. Truly, I abhor Black's philosophy of exploiting, poisoning and killing other people and the environment and I think that the world would be far better off without it because, essentially, the only reason black sees the world as "dog eat dog" is because of black. Therefore, I see myself as WURG and those are pretty much my favored colors in the game as well.
This is honestly my favorite thing about the game. Im so happy that someone FINALLY made a video on it. Stellar video.
exactly why i play izzet.
Red fast blue slow
The best Magic Color Pie video I have seen in a long time!
Let m,e introdue you to MTG: You have 4 collors to chose froim: White, Red, Black and Green. WE DON'T SAY THE U WORD ON THIS HOUSE!
So without all of the flavor text the card colors, and decks built around them, do the following:
White : Make yourself stronger with things like more fighters and more life. Use extreme measures to gain extreme advantages, or extreme condemnation. Generic speed.
Blue: Slowly spend time to build up your power. Once you're there, corrupt your opponent by controlling them. Very slow speed.
Red: Attack quick and erratically. Win as fast as you can.
Black: Sacrifice your own deck and creatures/your life points to become powerful. Generic speed.
Green: Work yourself up by summoning naturally strong (or numerous) creatures to overwhelm your enemy. Generic to slow speed.
In terms of the strength and weaknesses based on colors, it's:
White and Black are polar opposites and clash the hardest.
Blue and Red are polar opposites and clash the hardest.
Green clashes hardest with Red and White.
I liked this video very much!
You should do a single video for every single color, for every guild, for every shard and every "wedge" colors!
I would watch that.
This video was EXCELLENT! Really hope we see more of this!
Amazing video Wedge! Just started playing magic a couple weeks ago and I struggled with what color to lean into since they all do some amazing things but this video really helped me see myself in the different philosophies and methods of each color 😁😁 thanks a million man!
As I'm fairly new to MTG, any questions or things I wasn't understanding.was completely answered in these videos! You just gained one subscriber! Cheers from Nova Scotia!!!
I love videos like this where you can expand your general knowledge of the Magic universe. More like this, please!
I'd love to see other videos like this. It's pretty interesting, and it helps to inform new players about the colors and how they role. I'd love to see you make videos that talk more in depth about how the different colors interact with each other.
This is incredibly informative, thank you so much! I'll be sure to check out the Patreon, I love this channel and helping it out is definitely something I'd be interested in doing. Some more of these sort of videos would kick ass, maybe one for the guilds? They've always been pretty confusing to me, especially when I was just starting out. A rundown would be really awesome. Keep on keeping on!
Excellent Wedge, very well done! Things like this add to the lore of the game and the worlds/planes that inhabit the Magic multiverse.
Thanks for doing this & keep 'em coming!
Awesome video! This video was perfect for introducing the game and what kind of play styles there are to my friends!
Your explanations of the colors are perfect. I love this so much.
I really love these episodes. Really helps for new players to see the patterns in their own and others decks
This my friend, was an excellent video. If it would have gone on for an hour longer, I would have been sitting watching it for that duration. Thanks for making this, and I plan on checking out all your other content.
LOVE THIS STUFF!! Keep it up Wedge!
this was one of the best descriptions of the color pie I have seen. great job!!!
I've recently been introduced to magic with the "Goblins Vs Merfolk" deck, and red is probably my favourite color right now. I really like the strategy of building up a huge game ending combo but having to get it right the first time.
Just watched all of your videos on the Colour Pie and found them really interesting and informative. Hope when you have recovered you can finish that series. Get well soon.
Thanks for this series Wedge! Just became a patron. Keep up the awesome work!
Very informative and well presented! This was awesome. I love this type of video! Excellent work as always! Maybe the guilds next :P Selesnya FOR LIFE!
Great video! Great explanation. So much of what I loved learning the game at 10 years old at the kitchen table was understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each color on the pie. Sadly the game has expanded far beyond the wheel in its complexity. Sometimes I wish I could be back at that kitchen table playing Dredge Skeletons and Deathgrip and the like. I remember back then aligning with a color I found my self relating to. Mechanics became a huge part of the growth of the game and ultimately eroded the "color wheel" significance. But I still love this game. Sometimes I just wish I was back at that kitchen table...
Here are my favorite colors in order
5. White
4. Green
3. Red
2. Black
1. Blue
All the colors are truly awesome. Magic the gathering rules 💪💪💪💙
Paul Sackaroff no yugioh does
I thought this video was amazing!
I love hearing information on colours like this.
Could you make a wekly video, or even monthly, where you focus on colour combinations, with explanations?! :D
Okay loved this. Subscribed. Gonna look through your videos.
I wonder if you already have some videos with more color break downs, and guild color combinations as well as shard combinations
Hands down best MTG podcast, and this breakdown was well done and extremely thorough
great video man! i'll share it with my friends and would love a more in depth version!
Awesome presentation and great intro into the all things color wheel. Many thanks
Man, this video is awesome. Good piece of work!
This was great. You explained each color quickly and really accurately.
That was pretty Awesome!!! Explained pretty well. There was a few things to add, like how white has little draw effects or how black has little to deal with enchantment cards.
This video was amazing and well put together good job!
This video was really cool. I have heard about the color pie of magic, but i haven't gotten it this properly explained, and for that I'd like to thank you!
So much depth!!! I didn't know all that about all the colors!
I am a senior Magic player, as I am playing it since 2005 and I think that your video is both educational and interesting, especially to new players! Thanks a lot! P.S. Will definitely share with my friend who just started!
Great video! Well written and researched. Kudos
Really dug the video! Really liked how you put Black as 'Accepting the world for what it is and desires it all anyways', thought that was dead on. Would love to see you talk Philosophies, Strengths, and Weaknesses on color combinations, maybe spice some lore in about the major factions that represent said combinations. And perhaps even go further into the mono colors themselves. Again great vid, would adore to see more!
very well written. i've learned new flavor nuances about the color pie.
Best break down of the colors pie I have seen.
amazing video loved your choice for the wheel wording
How does the philosophy works for the guilds, shards and wedges when you have enemy colors in one group?
Best Magic video i have ever seen.
Great explanation mixed with even greater entertainment.
I'm just now getting serious about magic and this is a super good chest sheet when you're thinking strategy
Very good descriptions. I've been playing MTG for 20 years and you described the game better than I could have. Maybe next time do combo colours, like blue/green. Like how they are enemies at heart, but can be the best of friends when making a deck.
I love Color Pie themed topics. Great job Patreons!
With plasure my friend.
It was worth every penny to hear how great the color blue truly is .
+Tėma Perevanesjan Hahaha. Wedge really did talk up Blue, didn't he? Blue is the reason I play Red. I can manage to beat my Blue friends with Goblins about 60% of the time. Then again, they don't have the best Blue decks around...
+Ashton Withers yeah goblins are a weakness of blue
+Sandwich Productions I am quite glad I hit on Blue's weak point. XD
+Ashton Withers As long as we are talking edh..... Silent Arbiter ...
Super explanations and great color wheel. Thank you!
This made my day, no it my my day more interesting, it turned my day from something boring to something amazing thank you. I would love to see a part two, the philosophy is real! :)
Great job, can't wait to start
Great descriptions! Thank you!
I've been playing Magic for 3 years now and this video made me enlightened. I'm playing blue, and now I'm able to see, to know what am I playing actually. Thank you for this little tour into the world of the game!
wedge you present like a boss!!!keep up the geat work mate.
You explained this very well. Matches what I read online when first learning about the colors
White: Reinforcement [ building a fort ]
Black: Capitalization [ extracting value from unconventional sources & sabotaging competitors ]
Green: Investment [ planting seeds to grow a garden ]
Red: Exertion [ dashing towards a finish line ]
Blue: Deliberation [ conservatively stalling until your grand plan is ready ]
While I like the video, It felt a little rushed through. Loved the set of articles put out about a month ago revisiting this idea. It goes deeper in each of the colors. It also explains why they like/dislike each of the other colors.
Focusing on a color might have been better. I didn't know wedge could talk so quickly. liked backing it up with the cards.
awesome video! very well put together :)
Wow, I guess I'm Temur, never came across a source of info that helped me narrow it down so well.
hope you finish this series... please finish it.... I love it.
one of the better videos in a long time loved it
Guild colors and tri colors explanation would make an awesome video roo
i love these types of videos i wish there was explanations like this for the different color combination
Haha, thanks Wedge! And I just started to get my sister Hooked on the game too! Your timing is as wonderful as the content!
This was really interesting! Thank you.
Came from a guy who plays Magic the gathering and Leauge. Really cool video, made motivated to play magic games.5 min Blue seems to fit my personality, always curious haha.
Great vid. Subbed
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Really really liked this video. New magic player and I was super analytic and gravitated towards blue not knowing it's virtues
Wedge I really REALLY loved this video, you did a fantastic job. Everything I voted for and more!
WHY are there vids so great? Always!
Great intro just showed some blokes from work and may have got them hooked
Very well done vid. Thanks!
10:28 More like a good mono red deck will win the game by turn 3 or start losing the game by turn blue.
you guys have turn 3?
Epic Video Wedge! Thank you.
UR is the combo that's most fun to play IMO. You're a mad scientist, a cunning yet swift fighter, chaos organized - all in one. You have raw power as well as means to let it strike most efficiently.
A similar video on all the various color combinations/ guilds would be really cool.
Awesome! Really enjoyed it!
loved this video! definitely agree with the people saying you should do the color combos as well
Yo Wedge, Love youre channel! I was wondering could you make individual videos about the shards, wedges and 4 four colour identities
Now THAT'S a huge like count. This was awsome! the explanation about enemy colors and ally colors were missing, but nevertheless it was *super freaking awsome!*
This vid will definitely get a beginners interested ty got me hooked!
Great video! Thanks :)
btw mixing the color pie would be an awesome follow up!
When will we see videos on the philosophies of 3 color combos?
Love to see similar piece about color combos
Excellent video
Great video! Thanks for the awesome info!
Loved the video 👍🏼
Thanks for the video, Wedge! This made me feel much better about myself as a red player lolAlso, I guess I'll just join everyone else in saying that I'd love to see similar videos on guilds, shards, wedges, etc.
One of the best and I think hsould be the basic video to learn about the basic principles and ideas behind MTG anyone and everyone should see. FAVED!
Great stuff sir! I feel my monthly contribution is well spent!!!
Please finish your color pie study series. I really enjoy them.
Boros and Dimir please!
Love how the way red has the words in the color pie written in a way that goes against expectations.
+ODDnanref Didn't even notice it.
But yeah, it's red, so expect it to do its own thing.
