The five bells of Milan's oldest monastery ring on Epiphany Eve

- The monastery of Chiaravalle is the oldest and most famous in Milan, founded on 22 January 1135 at the express wish of St Bernard, who had passed through Italy to attend the Council of Pisa. The Gothic church was completed in 1221 and a magnificent tower was created in 1340, which has housed what is now the oldest bell in the diocese since 1404. The bell tower to the right of the façade was built in 1568 as a clock tower; in 1907, the famous Pruneri foundry created a new concert of five bells, among the most beautiful in the region, which are still rung by hand by the bellringers on their way out to the 13th-century cloister.

The bells are being rung according to the traditional technique called concerto, which consists of bringing the bells upwards and then bringing them down one at a time at regular intervals, controlling the timing through the presence of a musical director of the concert. The ringing was performed on the eve of Epiphany, the rainiest day of this 2024.
The first abbot was elected in 1138 at the behest of the pope, after which construction of the Gothic church began, inaugurated in the 13th century. Offerings from the Milanese led to the construction of three cloisters, a majestic church and several places to house the poor and pilgrims. From 1490 some of the greatest artists in history worked inside the church, such as Bramante, Bernardino Luini, the carver Carlo Garavaglia and even Raphael. The church was frescoed in the 1600s by magnificent painters, while the most important work of art is the wooden choir, executed in 1640 by the best craftsman in Italian history.
