"Journey into Imagination," an iconic attraction at EPCOT in Walt Disney World, opened its doors on March 5, 1983, and ran until October 10, 1998. This enchanting ride transported guests into a whimsical world where creativity knew no bounds, guided by two beloved characters: Dreamfinder, an imaginative inventor, and his mischievous dragon friend, Figment.
The journey began as Dreamfinder collected ideas with his Dream Machine, creating Figment from the sparks of imagination. Guests were taken through vibrant and fantastical scenes representing different forms of creativity, including art, literature, performing arts, and science. Each scene was filled with vivid colours, imaginative designs, and innovative special effects that brought the power of imagination to life.
Central to the ride was its unforgettable theme song, "One Little Spark," composed by the legendary Sherman Brothers. The song, coupled with the engaging narrative and endearing characters, made the attraction a timeless favourite.
In 1998, "Journey into Imagination" underwent a significant transformation, removing Dreamfinder and altering the ride's concept. Despite the changes, the original ride's spirit remains cherished by fans who fondly remember its magical exploration of imagination. Figment continues to be a symbol of creativity at EPCOT, keeping the legacy of "Journey into Imagination" alive for new generations to enjoy.

Great video!...WOW.. An interesting little fact about me: I was the very last public guest to ever the original attraction. I was there on it's last night when the line closed for the night, a cast member allowed me to wait in the corner of the loading area. They allowed me to sit in the very last seat in the last car on the last train. When the ride was over, several cast members gathered in the unload section and they gave me a group clap and I unloaded and thanked them with a tear in my eye. That was a spectacular ride and I certainly miss it.
That’s pretty sweet! I was there the week it opened, around March 2, 1983. It had a long line, and it was worth it!

OMG you’re never going to believe this, but I was actually the last, last person to ever ride this attraction. I was actually behind you in the loading area & they didn’t want to hurt your feelings so they let me go after you. After the ride everyone clapped even louder for me and presented me with a golden medallion. So happy to relive this amazing attraction. All hail Figment!!

I'm sorry,but this is going to hurt. I was actually behind you and the cast members hid me behind the counter until you finished the ride and locked the doors behind you. They then turned the ride back on and removed all the cars except for 1. They then removed all the seats except for 1. After that they followed me as i rode through and removed all the pieces as i passed them. I am the last figment highlander. There can be only one. @Sal-Lamandar
Ridiculous how much better the ride was versus the trash running at the present moment. Hearing Baxter talk about its current state in podcast interviews is pretty epic. He doesn’t hold back his negative opinion. This is the best video I’ve seen of it. Thank you!
SSE, Horizons, World of Motion, and Journey. Now THAT was a day at the park. There was literally nothing better. I miss the old EPCOT Center juggernaut dark rides so much.

Spaceship Earth and Living with the Land are the only remnants of the EPCOT of old now, everything else is either a gimmicky screen-based thrill ride or something that's not even close to the quality of it's original iteration.
I wish I was around to experience these great attractions at their prime.

Interestingly Disney has teased that something is happening with the attraction as they showed a video with Figment visited the Studio and the Imagineering department with some kind of idea. Disney needs to bring this version back. It truly shows what imagination can do! The current one focuses on the senses and doesn’t make sense to me.

What a beautiful ride. Now it only lives in our memories. With today's technologies just "Imagine" what they could come up with if we had imagineers like we used to have.

Figment actually visited the studio with some kind of idea. I wonder what they are planning.
I wonder how hard it would be to restore this version of the ride. It’s better than anything that came after it. It would still work today.

This video is a lifesaver ! I'm try to recreate the ride in minecraft since i never got to ride any version (I live in Europe ) and I've been trying to find footage of the queue for age, and even if we see it briefly, it's enough to help me get started and hopefully make it as accurate to the first iteration of the ride. And also, even if i don't really have a reason to feel nostalgie cause i've never been to epcot or Walt disney world for thay matter, i can't help but have that cozy feeling whenever i see journey into imagination videos, especially form the late 80's, early 90's. I love that ride so much and it's very nice and sweet message about imagination and being creative
I can’t even ride the current version because knowing what was is too painful seeing what replaced it. Given all the old Epcot nostalgia hype going on now, it would be a perfect time to restore the original glory

I'd like a ride to combine both Professor Marvel as the whimsical side and Nigel Channing as the more sensory side, replicating both halves of the brain, explaining that both are necessary to unlock ones imagination, with figment acting as their go between, like two quarrelling brothers brought together by the love of a family pet.
Or something. I dunno.

Thanks. I was fortunate enough to ride the original version a couple/few times before the refurb. The original, to me, had the most visual detail, richness, and fun elements that I cherished, and definitely was my favorite version. Glad to see it again here. Thanks. Somewhere in the basement we have old digital8 tapes that include this ride from 1996. I'll need to locate those. ;)

*sigh* I really miss the original ride. It was full of whimsy and wonder wherever you looked, and the hosts (Dreamfinder and Figment) were an absolute delight as they guided you through what inspires one's imagination.
The current version is cold, sterile, bereft of what made the original ride lovable, Eric Idle's comedic talent is wasted as the straight man of the attraction, and Figment is treated like a pest throughout it.
Thanks so much for sharing this! I'm so glad we have recordings of the original ride. Maybe some day we'll be able to reconstruct it, even if just virtually.
I'll never understand why people have to do so much editing to not get in trouble for copyright for something that doesn't even exist anymore (technically). Not your fault and thank you for showing what you have preserved. However, it's just a though that always pops into my mind when I watch something like this and people have heavily edit still to not get in trouble when I feel video makers like you shouldn't have to worry about that. A lot of you are sharing things we cannot see, or hear anymore, so why? i mean I collect Disney vintage stuff, including records, and I don't have this one and I'm pretty sure that would be the only legal way to listen to the original audio.
I have watched a LOT of old WDW ride footage. Thanks for posting this video! Great resolution and a few unique angles that I haven’t seen online before. Also nice that you added the actual Magnum P.I. footage that inspired Figment’s name!
Amazingly done! Thank you for sharing this. I feel so fortunate to have rode and remember the original ride in 1993 when I was 6. I love how you showed the Rainbow Tunnel and jumping water fountain too. There was something so special about Disney and Epcot during that time. While much has changed do to the times it is nice to see that they are interjecting references of this era so that people like myself can point out the hidden details they hold so dear.
Hopefully they also go back to original ride / Like they doing for test track - World of Motion 3.0

Ron Schneider told me Michael Eisner SPECIFICALLY requested to remove Figment from the ride at the meeting he attended. What more do you need to know about the man/company?
As I cannot remember the specific years that I was there, I do not think I rode the second iteration of the ride. I know I would have ridden the original, and think I rode the newer version. From this video, and remembering what I have seen on livestreams presently, I think this is the better version!! Thanks for posting!

I went on this when I was maybe 11, absolutely blew me away then I got to leave the attraction all super happy and then see the jumping fountains. It was a good day, until we got stuck on body wars lol.
I liked the original and think it should be brought back just as it was with new tech. It was one of the very best dark rides they ever created.
In the good days of Disney even when rides were closing they were still taken care of and working well.

With the new technology they can make it with the layout they have right now. Projectors can folow every train individualy instead of the mechanicaly nightmare turntable.

the original attraction should be restored. it was the best ride disney ever made, and, as a kid, it was my favorite thing in the world. the current version is a shit-flavored shell of the original.

loving Spaceship earth and Living with the Land from "classic epcot" (even with changes over the years) ... Horizons AND this ride (+ an updated for 2024+ version of the original Imageworks) is what i'd have in my own Epcot redo .... I miss this ride so much
You disabled the original audio to avoid copyright infringement and then replaced it with other copyright infringing music?
Yes true, but I had no copyright problems when using the audio, It's the vocal in the original version which is the problem
Are you not allowed to use the audio even in instances of commentary? What is the distinction between the other creators using POV and this, which should be even easier to post under the commentary banner.
I’m afraid not, it getting harder and harder now if copyright music is in video, even if it’s only a 15 - 20 second of copyright audio it’s still picked up when the video is getting uploaded
I never had the chance to visit when I was a kid, my family was far too low income to make a trip like that. Bummed I can't check it out myself now, but this is the next best thing! I wish parks would stop re theming or completely replacing rides that people absolutely love, especially when they do so for the sake of some new IP.

I love how Eric Idle is more well known today for tanking the Figment ride than being part of Monty Python.
this ride needs to shut down but not "change" ... just make it a 2024+ UPDATE to the ORIGINAL spirit of the ride .... i know they will never get rid of that DVC stuff but i say do that AND the same thing (a 2024+ update in the original spirit) with ImageWorks

I think that what disney did to journey into imagination should have been a red flag in what disney was gonna do in the future. A disaster .
The revamped Communicore & central gardens are reportedly very good. It's nice the wasteful Fountain of Nations has finally been removed. Also, the Moana splash area is way better than some dark ride, which is always better with widescreens instead of silly audioanimatronics. As for the new Tiana attraction, that now makes the MK a must-see compared with Epcot.
