    In this 100% unsponsored video, I share with you days 3 and 4 of a 4 (driving) day road trip to Venice, en route we take in as many places as possible that would be of interest to petrolheads, including some of the best roads and scenery Europe has to offer, and you can do it too! This video covers the leg from Stuttgart to Venice, stopping off at the Austrian Alps and the real home of Porsche, before blasting over the Grossglockner High Alpine Pass, through the Dolomites via James Bond's (and Simon Templar's!) favorite ski resort and on to the Adriatic Sea at Venice.

    Reminds me of a trip with my father 50 years ago in August in a bay window camper where we visited Wolfsburg, Hannover, Kassel and Westfalia werk, then on to Austria and the pass via the Eagles nest. Northern Italy has a strong Austrian feel as it was part of the Austro- Hungarian empire until the end of WW1.

      @@volkswizardI get that. We’ve been to the Eagles nest a few times. Everything is very educational and no surprise in German. The house itself is just a cafe now with indoors and outdoor seating. It’s good to walk to some of the memorials along the cliffs and of course more stunning views. Most of Berchtesgaden’s relationship with the Nazi party has been erased so there is hardly anything to see and what there is is respectful. None of the great houses belonging to the various leaders within the party exist apart from some odd foundations. TBH the bus ride up and down to mountain the Eagles Nest is the most worrying part

      Good morning Alfred. There is a big multi-storey car park just on the Venice side of the bridge that joins the mainland. I didn't fancy that so we booked a hotel in Mestre with a secure car park and got the bus or train in. This makes for a lot less stressful and better value visit than staying on the island itself. If you want to stay closer I'd recommend the Lido which has some nice hotels and is a short Vaporetto ride to main island. You need to get on a car ferry to get there but once there you can drive around though it's not massive - just be aware that ferry boats and low splitters are rarely a good mix so Mestre might be best bet :) www.visitlido.it/en/experiences/by-car-to-venice-via-the-lido/

      Thanks Tony! That's not a bad idea for a summer business, especially as CZcams is hard work during British Summer Time as people too busy doing stuff (like road trips!) to watch. I see a lot of road trip videos and it can put you off, too much crazy driving and testosterone so maybe there is a market for a more laid back approach where the sights and scenery are the main draw with the odd good road thrown in. Weather is the only downer, we were lucky this year but in 2015 we weren't and a wet and dull Austria in June is no fun, it was 2 degrees in St. Anton on the longest day of the year🏔

    Looks like a great trip! As an 987.2 PDK Cayman S owner that is looking at a newer 981 GTS for exactly these kind of European trips, what do you reckon is the best suited, PDK or manual?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That’s a good question, I’ll try and avoid being subjective as it’s an emotive subject: PDK has a really high 7th gear which reduces cruising revs and increases mpg so definitely adds to the GT capability. I’ve had a clutch go on a manual 911 in Austria so that’s unlikely with PDK. Manual gears are famously long, PDK ones are slightly better but the main benefit is you are more inclined to shift down with PDK. Also in the inevitable autobahn jams PDK makes life easier. Now for the subjective bit - I’m sick to back teeth of journos saying how great manuals are. Maybe if you can be arsed to heel and toe but for 99.9% of population who can’t, PDK is just better (and you get proper metal paddles with GTS’ Sport Design steering wheel👌Also no chance of buzzing your engine with a bad shift, if Joe Achilles can do it (unclear if it was driver error or due to the extra power straining engine and gearbox mounts but it still wouldn’t have happened with an automatic)

    • @sthomson5442
      @sthomson5442 Před 11 měsíci

      @@volkswizard thanks Andrew, I think you have just confirmed what my thoughts were exactly. Whilst I do miss the interaction of the manual on my local West of Scotland B roads I can’t help but think on a 2000 plus mile European trip the benefit of the PDK would be far more sensible to have than a manual.

What should be done ? Because the esp is triggered automatically from zero to 50 km/h. I just want to change the pump. Do you think it can work again then I sell it

      @@volkswizard I did! VW fan, had a few, now on Audi Q5 but love the Porsche! Italy probably one of my favourite places to visit too, Venice was amazing!

    Red Porsche, sunny, scenery, Europe, common borders, common currency what's not to like.

      Thanks Raj, Boxster is the poor man's Porsche (so they say) but it offers rich rewards on trips like this 😍

    Another overpriced Porsche

      It’s easy to blow a lot more in depreciation on a Golf than this Porsche so it’s actually cheap when you look at total cost of ownership. Stick £45k in a Mk8 Golf R today and let’s talk again in 2 years and see which has lost the most value👍
