  • When Airbus partnered with American Magic, some of the world's leading aerospace engineers joined our team. On the ground from the early stages, they are making us faster and safer every day while also considering what foiling innovations could eventually make their way into aircraft that sail the skies.

Meanwhile our planet, our home is being destroyed by us doing the wrong things. We must all tell the truth and put our energy and resources into the things that really matter - like rescuing our environment!

    I think if you can imagine it, you can build it. Can you swap the sails for fins of some kind of technology? Fins located in different places on the fish serve different purposes such as moving forward, turning, keeping an upright position or stopping. Flying fish use pectoral fins for gliding. Just saying ...

    • @samuelhopely4853
      @samuelhopely4853 Před 4 lety +1

      Well in a sense, that's the whole idea of foils and keels as a whole! The fish uses the fins on its body for thrust, which works because it can push against water, which is 800 times denser than air. The foils now do all of those things that you mentioned fish do, using force from the wind in stead of from muscle to create forward and upward motion and keep the boat stable (which they've gotten so much better at compared to 2013's AC). Unfortunately all the teams are required to use a soft wing for this cup, but the wing sail in general is just like a giant adipose fin. The irony is, as we see in the new aerodynamic hull designs from Ineos and American Magic, the performance of the boat as it moves through the air has become almost more important that how it moves through the water! They basically cruise at highway speeds now, and the drag created by that much hull area is massive. I think we're bound to see inspiration from birds, so to speak, come in the future just as much as from fish!

    This new American (awesome) pilot needs to be tested against other boats. He will be challenged and many times intimidated by the rest of the pack, and when push comes to shove... he will need to make a split second decision and weigh his options that will either destroy his position(s), which he may have to do or risk the destruction of the boat. He must know ALL the rules in order to make these highly intricate decisions.

      I too was fairly disappointed when NZ chose the mono-hull. But I am starting to warm up to it after seeing the proposed design. Projecting that top speed will be even faster than the cats. Smaller Crew, that is good. Self Righting, that is good. But I do worry about the close encounters with other racers and the foils getting tangled. Gonna be huge learning curves.
