- Brrrrrgh! It's a crisp winter today in Train Sim World! And it's Christmas! The perfect time for Network Rail to shut down one of the busiest stations in London, right?
Not exactly. Join me as I take a Class 43 down to Ealing Broadway Station and rescue all the stranded Londoners in this rather chilly scenario from TSW's latest DLC: Great Western Express.

My dad's a train driver for East Midlands Trains and he drives these HSTs. He quite likes being on his own, he doesn't mind that so much, and there's no choice but to keep your concentration; it's not too difficult once you start. You can you breakfast or dinner on the go, but my dad rarely does it. For toilets, he either has to wait until he gets to where he's going, or in a desperate situation, you find a bottle...and that door through the back of the cab is the engine and fan room, the hot and noisy bit that makes it go, sadly no toilet in there...although there were some drivers that used to do it in the engine room!
Any of the loco models in the US that have a nose in the design... there's usually a small restroom in there. Do his trains over there have something like a dead man's button? They have those here, where it beeps, and they have to hit it in a certain amount of time, or the train stops.
@Squirrel I agree with Owen but here in Singapore, there is a toilet at the platform for every overground station for the driver and in underground stations it is usually run but automated trains so no toilet needed.
Yup there's a dead man's pedal located at the driver's feet...exactly the same concept, but you take your feet off the pedal when it beeps at you!
In Singapore, the trains can be set to an automated mode but still with a driver in the cab
Owen J. Gunn Videography what happens if the train manager needs to assist the driver? Does he go through the engine room or is the only way to see him is to go onto the track
I live in Slough, and I can't believe they have indeed have the exact buildings. In fact I live in the flat next to platform 6 in Slough. The have got the pumpkins right as well...
Cyril Liju Jacob infinite flight, seriously?
Yes it does look great, I live in Maidenhead! I didn't see Tesco Extra though?
Cyril Liju Jacob that is incredible
Charlie Bentley it’s a good game, infinite flight.
Cyril Liju Jacob that was before global.
The narrator who reads the scenario script reminds me of playing the old Hitman games. Each time she finishes speaking I can almost hear "Good luck 47"
Oooo Diana. You just reminded me of her.
Handy things to remember...
@30mph - 1 mile = 2mins
@60mph - 1 mile = 1min
@120mph - 1 mile = 30secs
From what I can find, it takes more than 30secs to stop an HST from 120mph with emergency braking - I wouldn't leave the braking until you're a mile out!!
In the mid 60s I lived in a pub next to Langley station. Very pleased to see it there - although it is now an Indian restaurant. Also, I have walked along the mentioned canal, it is a branch line of the Grand Union, many times. Wonderful to see the accuracy.
Hey, I work for network rail and at 25:30 you said why would you want to work xmas, because on xmas day we get 400% pay
But then why would NR shut it down at xmas? If they (have to) pay 400%, it will be much more expensive for them to do the renovations on xmas.
Delft Trains The joys of having a large budget (and with xmas day being the only day that the railway shuts, network rail isn't too fussed how much things cost, when it's the day they can mess with mainline stations without affecting customers) and a forceful union, tbh would you want to work xmas day for a normal rate of pay, it's the only way to get projects done
Unless you work for the NHS you get sunday rate pay (time and 2/3) & day in leiu
scottydoouk depends on your contract
scottydoouk 266% pay then?
In Japan and Taiwan train drivers are required to say whatever they are doing and acknowledge stuff loudly, to keep concentration up and preventing mistakes.
Gryvix in the UK we call that risk triggered commentary or Press and Call. 😀
I call it talking to myself, and do it a lot.😕
Is it just me that goes to sleep to this stuff? Brilliant videos but i love to fall asleep to them 😂
Smelly rat not just you.
same, squirrel has a really soothing voice. I always fall asleep to the world of warships playlist.
His videos are always dragged out so long. No skipping. Just detail after detail. I just skip some parts of the vid.
Bit like asmr.
I wouldn’t say dragged out like someone else has said , he’s thorough and that’s good. He’s really got me interested in train sim world
4 yrs later, i do that too
I'm an freight train driver here in brazil and work alone. It's a bit hard to keep the concentration specially when the traffic is ligh or the dispatcher is prioritizing my train .Here we dont have physical signalling, the company uses an gps based system with an electronic fence, wich drops the speed down to zero when you are reaching the destination determined by the dispatcher. On the On-board computer we can see a basic mapping of the line and licensing so i use that to plan things like getting some for eat or go to the bathroom.Sometimes doesn't work but i always can talk to the dispathcer via gps text message
Bruno Manfredini have you witnessed any suicides?
It did show you that speed limit change to 15mph in the upper right.
If you keep talking to someone, then you would lose concentration. Being on your own in the cab has the opposite effect [re: 31:38].
I love being on my own when I drive my train!
It can be difficult to eat and drink whilst driving as there is a lot to look out for in complicated/complex areas [major junctions/stations].
If you need to go to the toilet, you have to go at the next station/stop signal [and if necessary, delay the train, as our schedules are very
tight!]
You would not be able to stand up like you did [on most trains] as the DVD/DSD would go off and put on the brakes, so you have to sit
down for long periods of time, and if the seat is bad....can cause back issues etc.
There is a lot to know in the job...it's like having to know all the street names and where the traffic lights are and who controls them on
your way to work [in a car], know where all all the speed changes are, where to shut off and brake for the speeds or stations and signals.
Our rule book is about 3 inches thick. We are tested [in my company] on the rules every other year, and the year when not, we are on a
simulator [with rules questions]. We also need to know how to fix the train, use communications equipment, how to deal with fires
evacuations etc.
How long did it take 4 u 2 write this?I'm impressed 😆
Have you ever had a SPAD incident?
I live not far from this line and I must say that the depiction of buildings, stations and other structures (from 2017) are instantly recognisable to me - pretty amazing !
That is a great looking train and nice and quiet. I live beside a switch yard in British Columbia, Canada and wish I had such quiet and pleasing trains. I get Canadian Pacific, Burlington Northern, Santa Fe and Spry all banging and pulling all night. They connect up to 125 cars and head for the mountains.
It's amazing that after so many years playing train sims you still haven't learnt that the way to slow a train down is NOT by using the brakes but rather by using the aptly named reverser.
I keep finding really nice little details in this dlc, just noticed that you have a torch!! (Press L when in foot). Pretty useful when your having a walkabout on the tracks in pitch darkness! Oh, and wait til you notice the snow melting if it's too warm (set high snow level in anything other than a winter preset and it'll melt before your eyes) + Free cam is 8.. but it only seems to work when you're already in an external cam.
Why would DTG put a torch in TSW? If it's dark they should have added a flashlight.
Bagged_Gamer, Maybe it just comes down to national/regional language variations, but for me, in the part of the UK I live in, a torch and a flashlight are one and the same, with both terms being interchangeable.
Bagged_gamer in the UK we call flashlights torches, does t have different meaning where you live?
Press P for the pitchforks to match!
Technically the are "officially" called Flashlights in the UK too. We use "torches" but a torch is a pole with a flame at the end.
The intro used in this video is 23 seconds long. And it's the only one I can watch without moaning or skipping.
@Android technicalities
That 3rd switch on the left that shows as "spare" really is spare on these revamped class 43.))
Hats off to the people who crafted the lighting and the programmers overall - this is one shitload of work and done masterfully- 👍😎👏
For anyone who wanted different cameras, if u press 0, will get a choice between external and internal cameras. The free camera is in external (obviously) and you can control it using arrow keys
They done a survey and found that christmas is actually the quietest period on trains...which is why the works are done then.
I like how they even model the slight ripples in the sheet metal on the sides. Hardly anybody does that. It would be nice if they had an atmospheric detail with the train blowing snow. But that's hard to replicate well. I can totally see this being a co-op thing eventually, where people play together and have crews, and a central dispatcher and everything.
2:03 that made me smile for some reason
I wasn't going to find the guard buzzer for love nor money without this video. Thanks so much!
I like the way you talk about the doors and the locking. It's so true, small details are important!
19:25 no warning at all apart from the warning you had in the top right for around 2 mins ;)
hahaha, yeah.... he likes to do the "it isn't my fault, it's the damn game's fault" thing...
Well, about 20 secs, to be honest. But it's true that -- quite aside from any heads-up display in the game, which wouldn't be there in real life -- Squirrel never seems to pay any attention to junction indicator (route divergence) lights on the signals. When these are illuminated they already indicate the need for a reduction in speed, and the need to check the trackside speed-limit boards.
Squirrel, with all safety systems on its a very high quality sim. While I don't drive HSTs I drive similar trains in the UK. De-isolate the DSD, AWS and TPWS and those all behave correctly, even down to the 1m time out of an acknowledged TPWS demand and temporary override.
That being said there does need to be much more tutorial available. I could jump in, but I know my way around a cab, without it it really is overwhelming
"Man details train after switching the switches at train depot" 😂
2:09 I'm sitting here thinking; "Shit, platform 5? Where i'm from, you're lucky to see a platform 3"
18:43 Yes you're right about the draw distance issue. also the exterior sound needs improving there's no clack of wheel on rail, nice review.
40:56 AGENT 47 waiting for a train to catch on XD
the graphics are amazing! and detail loved it
thanks for the demo made me go buy it.
Multiplayer actually is what DTG promised for TSW, but any sign of it vanished in the last months...
Nice vid. Just one tip: you need to turn the aws on yourself with the aws isolation switch. On this train is this on the right side of the cabine. In the comuter train is the switch at the fuse cabinet behind the drivers seat.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut of CTRL + ENTER on any train.
I'm a driver with SJ in Sweden. Our longest drives is just over four hours plus some fore and after work. You need a good lbadder and to remember the loo before You start driving. There are no drivers toilets on the train but in emegency You go outside. At least if Youre a man.
We have radio in the cab and there is no restrictions on having coffee or snacks during service. Just not in front of passengers and as a driver Youre mostly on Your own so thats not an issue. You need to be alert all the time but there are fases needing more attention than others. We have ATP (called ATC2) that keep us informed on actual speed limit and upcoming restrictions and stop signals. No need to acknowledge anything but to keep the dead mans pedal in correct position. ATC will brake the train if You dont brake or dont break enough. If You pass a signal at danger the ATC make an emergency brake application.
I'm from Brazil, and I've been to Slough station a couple of times. Incredible how perfect the simulator is. I really get the feeling of getting back to the station. I can even see the hotel where I was hosted in that opportunity! Great videos, with a nice touch of humor! I just subscribed to it - keep it going!
that braking job at 15:00 amazing
Every Christmas I feel like watching this video again. Nice and relaxing, with a tea or hot chocolate in hand. :-)
I have been using this train and AWS works fine, as long as you enable it by switching from Isolated over on the right.
I travel on these all the time on the EMR and love them. The carriages are so much better than modern x country.
I LOVE SQUIRREL HE IS GOOD AT ALL OF THE GAMES HE PLAYS
They've electrified the section from London to Reading already for Crossrail, and they're well on the way to electrifying Reading to Bristol and Cardiff. It's a very big project to electrify all of it, which is why it seems slow.
Very enjoyable and felt quite chilled after that 👍👍
You can turn on the AWS by setting the controller at the top right of the panel on second man's side to normal
The graphics looks amazing
we need more scenerios, i have already completed everything, i was excited for the u.k content, the class 66 is my favorite train outside of the class 57 and i am from the states, i haven't even played heavy haul. i agree the sound needs turned up.
Go into service menu, and you can play ANY service from the 24 hour rolling timetable. I think there are something like 400 jobs, and you can go from one to another just by getting off, and getting into the cab of another train. It's a slightly different concept to train Sim 2017, but if you want to do a full shift, it's easy
MTU engines are quieter and sound more lorry like than the good old Paxman Valenta,
I live in Slough, the station needs a few fixes, the footbridge does not have platform signs, platform 6 is blocked off and there isn't a random fence at platform 5.
Another great video by Squirrel. Plz keep doing TSW.
having been a commuter myself, I can see why they're doing maintenance during Christmas time. The amount of people going by train to work and back is horrendous. I can't assume tourism traffic being that big - especially for a railway service which generally tend to have a focus on business travelling.
For example: I had to take the 8:12 Train, because there was no way, being able to even get onto the 8:04, and leaving at 8am is already pretty late for a commuter.
Man, I've never played train simulators but you have such a great voice and accent that I just can't stop watching!
Love your videos Paul keep them coming!
Hmm what platform are we on OOH PUMKIN
Crossrail goes from (as you said) near Shenfield in the east over to reading in the west. There is also a branch to Heathrow.
They need to do Melbourne, Australia...VERY amusing, you'll become an expert at shunting before you've even gotten out of the station to begin your run!
They are electrifying the line for Crossrail as the Western end of the line terminates at Reading, with another branch to Heathrow.
plus u should turn the engine off before u leave the cab cause train is terminating great vid tho
I think the glitch by the wheels maybe an attempt to provide some 'snow dust' which would make sense
The HST is called the XPT which stands for Xpress Train in Australia
Oh Slough. I almost expected David Brent to stand on the platform. :)
Crossrail will go all the way to Reading!
Great video btw, keep up the good work!
This is my train service in Gloucester to Bristol temple meads
These graphics with Armstrong Powerhouse realism would be awesome!
AWS and DSD are fully operational but isolated by default and need to be turned on. The circuit breakers are on the wall behind the driver.
Great video ,8 on your keyboard gives a line-side view in the retail version.
looks just so nice
You bring your own snacks, if there are catering staff on board they will often bring us hot drinks
Make more TSW videos! They are soo cool and i love to watch them! Thank you for doing what you do :)
Slough in the game is the wrong way round
Just bought this game absolutely love it
Looks like a few adjustments/improveents are needed. Maybe I'll wait for the first update before diving in.
Hi Squirrel, I've been watching your videos for a few years now. I especially like all your Euro/American Truck Simulator and Train Simulator videos. I visited the UK for the first time this past July (I'm from Canada). It was my first time ever across the Atlantic. It was neat to be at some of these train stations in real life that I'd only ever seen in videos and games like this. Cheers :-D . Now when I hear things like "Paddington Station", "St.Pancras" or "King's Cross", I actually know where they are and have some sense of the place.
I'd like to see a doc for this game that took place in Pennsylvania on a old steam loco. I always find that train so gorgeous.
love it!!! "ooo pumpkin!" lol
This game looks beautiful.
In winter, trees lose their leaves. The graphic designers still work.
Dominique Pierre not all trees
Sure enough, not all trees. But here, it's all the trees.
Press Ctrl + Enter to turn on AWS and DSD for all trains. It's turned off by default for inexperienced people
At 6:29 he inspects the AWS isolation switch but doesn't notice it is isolated!
lcmortensen I know! That was so frustrating but hopefully he will get it on for next time. *sigh*
Ant Craft its nothing to do with being inexperienced you bigot😂😂
some train conductors have a co-driver license. they are allowed to drive if something happens to primary engineers. commuter trains do not, though.
Sometimes I watch his videos and I wonder how things would go if he were doing these things in reality. Imagine him as an HST engineer, every once in awhile he'll be stopping at a platform and suddenly start going "oh my lifestopstopstopstopstapstahpstohpstuhp!" during the last few yards of braking.
squirrel, i live in reading and i go train spotting at reading station at least once a week and i seen a maintainance train go by and there were some people that worked on the cables and posts, cuz they already put up the over head posts till reading long time ago and they put up the cables too and i seen many 800s go through rading station but they weren't in service, just telling you this because you didn't seem sure about the project, so just so you know, GWR is still doing it, soon i hope there will come 387 services to reading yay
On the TSW Long Haul and their DSL you were questioning how to get Trackside side train passing by and a free camera scan but it's only limit. if you push number 8 on your keyboard will do the trick
I'd like to see them expand the GWR line to go through Cardiff Central as I have been there loads of times and seen and been on a HST there
This is awesome I love it
I know someone who drives trains in London Underground 😁 she has to drive 3 hours every week to get to London to drive them. Stressful job
Crossrail is going to go all the way to Reading!
I’ve seen so many of these HSTs go through slough
Again fantastic content paul
great video paul as per usuall GG dude :)
Awesome video used to love watching all the train simulators you made still go back and watch some of them !! Keep up the good work squirrel :-)
No shadowing on the interiors when you go under world shadows, like bridges and tunnels... that sucks.
The buildings are actually correct i live in that area and its perfect
Still few graphic glitches but apart from that it looks good! I'm convinced.
Great video squrriel they are awsome train sim and bus sim also some of your other video
Enjoyed very much
down here in australia we have the exact same train except it's called the xpt ( express passenger train) and it accelerates a lot quicker than that aswell
I'm finally. not the only English person and BTW I'm in North England so I don't know the train lines down there but I know there's a train line from Liverpool to London which is from North to South England
Documentation? Paul its your job to show gamers what all the buttons do lol. Picking the TSW/GWE bundle up this month whist on sale. very nice looking game.
"went from 30 to 15 without any warning"... Had 250yards at 20mph with it showing a 15mph speed change.
The route from Reading to Paddington is all electrified. Because GWR uses the Electrostar on that route into Paddington. So electric trains can be used in the game, If it would ever let you too!
Max Rothermel it's based in 2015
Ahh makes more sense now, thanks haha! Didn't get that bit!
This should have been a christmas special lol
