  • In todays video I'm going to rank Manowar's full discography. Manowar is an American heavy/power metal band. They were one of the early pioneers of sword and sorcery styled epic heavy metal but also one of the first bands that dealt with viking themed metal. Manowar from New York released their debut album Battle Hymns in 1982 and ever since then Joey DeMaio and Eric Adams has kept the band alive through various lineups. So today we're ranking Manowar's full discography from the worst to the best. Rank Into Glory, Enjoy!!

That album cemented the idea of metal as religion for me. I mean it has a lot of 'soft' stuff on it... But the overriding thing you get from it is that you just went to metal church. Like you just stood in the presence of greatness that you're almost not worthy of...
Someone asks you 'what is metal'? Sure, play them Sabbath, play them extreme metal, play them Painkiller... All correct answers... But play them 'The Crown & The Ring' together with 'Kingdom Come' and they now have been exposed to the unique power & glory of true heavy metal \m/

I dont think you mentioned but what really makes the first six albums way better than the rest of thier stuff was Ross the Boss on guitar. He wrote a majority of the classic song from that era and really put down the heavy riffs, and a heavy riff is what specifically makes a song metal. After he left all their stuff (except Metal Warriors, which I've always suspected was a Ross the Boss compossion) had a focus on singing about being metal rather than actually being metal and what is music called that is centered around the vocals kids? That's right, pop!

    • @joelnallo7252
      @joelnallo7252 Pƙed 2 lety +4

I totaly agree that Manowar lost some quality when Ross was kicked out.
Can't say agree that they go into pop after that. But I think overall all the songs about how "true" they are gets a bit tiresome.
The old school brutal war/viking theme is what i mainly love about their stuff.
There are still some good songs on newer albums. But yeah you can se a overall decline in quality.

Into Glory Ride is one of the best metal albums of all time, eternally filtering plebs with the band's image, the cover and THAT opening track.
"Gates of Valhalla" is the uncredited prototype for Viking Metal. It came out long before Bathory ripped it off, sometimes to a comical extent like in "Valhalla".
"March for Revenge" is the uncredited prototype for Epic Doom Metal, coming out multiple years before Epicus Doomicus Metalicus.

The Triumph of Steel (1992) was my introduction to the band band in 2000/2001 and to this day, it is still my favourite albums of theirs. I don't find the 28 minute track boring at all and the rest of the tracks kick ass, such as Spirit Horse Of The Cherokee, Burning (love the heavy intro riff), The Demon's Whip, The Power Of Thy Sword, and the gorgeous Master Of The Wind (reminiscent of Heart Of Steel from Kings of Metal).

I somewhat agree with this list..... The first time i ever heard ManOwaR was in 1987... the FtW album. I was 12 and my slightly older cousin bought it from Columbia House just because he loved the name and it turned out to be the best tape out of all the bunch. I was in love with it from the first time he played it for me and then i wore out 2 FtW cassettes myself over the next 3 years or so. The music was great but Eric Adams voice just captivated me beyond this world. At just about the same time i got a hold of KoM in '88 and from that point on they were my favorite band over Anything else. Years later after the ToS album came out i immediately bought it when i saw it at the record store (Now only knowing of 3 ManOwaR albums) I sent off to join the Army Of Immortals fan club and got a booklet (The Oracle Vol 2) And it had an order form in the back with all their older albums for sale on cassette. That Is when i discovered all their earlier stuff, I still have all four black cassettes today as well as my well-worn out KoM shirt i had bought too. Its no secret their newer albums are almost on trash level.. But they will always be 80s ManOwaR to me as when i originally discovered them............ Leaving out all KL junk... Here Is My ranking starting with #7 TRIUMPH of STEEL #6 BATTLE HYMNS #1 IGR,HTE,SOTH,FTW,KOM

I didn't catch the name of the song. Next day I go to Harmony House and head straight for the metal section. I find Manowar and end up buying Battle Hymns because I didn't know the name of the song I heard the day before. I ended up loving Battle Hymns anyway. MANOWAR is an interesting band. Outrageous. Proud. Loud.
Kinda like THOR was, but really really good musicianship.
I heard the drummer died somewhat young. That bugged me.
And Ross the Boss reveals in interviews that the bassist was the boss.

It is the year 1989. Two German High School student discovered the „Kings of Metal“ album and can‘t stop listening to it. In particular the lyrics of the last song „Blood of the Kings“ is most interesting. The band is listing within the lyrics their studio albums in chronological order. But two albums were totally unknown. Unknown to us, unknown by the record shop. At times where there was no internet it took us weeks to find out, that these two albums „Hail to England“ and „Into Glory Ride“ where not available on German market because of legal issues. A few months later I found them as a bootleg on CD (both on one CD). I still keep it as a treasure. Real masterpieces!

Been a Manowarrior since 2005. They are very much influential and inspiring to me, both in terms of true metal might and to fight on in this life as life is like a battle and we just fight on. They had a good influence on me on my college days. Call to Arms is my first Manowar song I ever heard, however I did start with listening to Battle Hymns and went up from there. For the old ones, I consider Kings of Metal to be their best as well as Hail to England. Gods of War is still fantastic to me because of the orchestration, the Norse themes and a number of songs that I like, though it is kinda long with the narration. However, honestly, The Lord of Steel is rather disappointing and lame, even though there are a few songs that I like there. I really wonder how things will be like if they went on with their Hammer of the Gods album. Hail to Manowar and true metal!
    My personal rating:
    1 - Kings of Metal
    2 - Hail to England
    3 - Gods of War
4 - Warriors of the World
    5 - Into Glory Ride
6 - The Triumph of Steel
7 - Sign of the Hammer
    8 - Louder Than Hell
    9 - Battle Hymns
    10 - Fighting the World
11 - The Lord of Steel

Manowar was the band that finally made me a metal head with the song Hand of Doom. I love the band and accept that they are cheesy, over the top, and sometimes ridiculous, but I love them regardless. I think your list is great. The only thing I'd change is I'd move Gods of War higher on the list because I find it enjoyable to listen to personally. for me there is really no "weak" album from Manowar, yeah of course some are "weaker" than others, but overall the style and quality is in every album great for me. But I do have the absolute album "Triumph of Steel" this is masterpiece beyond masterpiece for me. Achilles Agony And Ecstasy in eigth parts is the best song ever, period. No debate!
I listen to all albums regularly on my phone from time to time.
What I think that most people doesn't realize is Eric and Joey are 60+ years old, it's understandable they will not rock crazy 200mph fast songs as in their 30s. So it must (I think) reflect on their latest albums, but I still honestly like those album.
The only thing I agree with many people is, it would be nice to release proper full length album.
Btw, Thunder in the Sky and last Final Battle pt1 are also great... just the same thing, very short... we need full album

Born in a Grave, Righteous Glory, Touch The Sky, and Kingdom of Steel are great songs! Warriors of the World with the bonus songs: I Believe and Dawn of Battle is the version to get, they make the album better. Also their EP Thunder in the Sky is one of their best! Fighting the World was a definite change in direction from the previous album. Put an ad in the back of Kerrang looking for people who just want to kill, carry on an ode to Kansas. I know that the Kansas is different than the Manowar, but Manowar sounds like Kansas on Carry On as well as some of the ballads on Kings of Metal. It's not an insult, the fact that Eric Adams can pull off Vocals that could have been on a Styx or Kansas songs is a compliment to what a great Vocalist he actually is. I always thought that most of Eric's Vocals resembled Dan Beehler of Exciter, but like a more controlled and trained rendition of Dan . Basically if Dan Beehler would have taken some Voice lessons he would probably sound exactly like Eric Adams. I always noticed similarities in their actual Voices, not their techniques

    1. Sign of the Hammer 2. Kings of Metal 3. Into Glory Ride 4. Hail to England 5. Fighting the World 6. The Triumph of Steel 7. Battle Hymns 8. Gods of War (Sleipnir is easily the best track, album otherwise contains much filler) 9. Louder Than Hell (Brothers of Metal and Power, even though it would have been sub-par on their 80's albums). They made only 1 weak track with Ross The Boss and that's Violence & Bloodshed, not counting the bass solos, well, Kings of Metal title track ain't good either, a song straight out of the Spinal Tap notebook). The Triumph of Steel has a mindless shred guitarist in Shankle, but still has fantastic tracks like Power of Thy Sword (album's only brilliant guitar solo, just before the fade out), Spirit Horse of the Cherokee, Ride the Dragon and Master of the Wind. Ross is one of the best and sorely missed in Manowar. The other 2 albums are shite. 80's Manowar is the so called gold standard of American power metal, as are Crimson Glory, Savatage and Riot.

I totally agree with this ranking, I think all 4 are about equal. Sign of the Hammer had the really intense Mountains, Guyana, and Thor ( Hammerhead) , but also the awful Animals, and the funny All Men Play On Ten. Hail To England musically was great with the exception of Black Arrows , but the silly over the top Cut off my head release all my evil, impale me on the horns of death speech followed by the gospel sounding chorus of I Know the Man who waits , Satan is his name, Across the Bridge of Death there he stands in Flames, Satan don't forsake me , I wait for you to take me impressed me when I was 16 , but I have since found it embarrassing to listen to. Into Glory Ride other than the intro to Warlord, which must have been a premonition of the guitar player who would join replace the mighty Ross the Boss , but it says she's only 16 , to correctly predict the future guitar player it would have had to say he's only 6. Even Nostradaumus didn't predict the future with 100% accuracy, so it was close enough. I remember when I first bought Battle Hymns on vinyl, and the groovy rhythm of Death Tone kicked in with lyrics like you were sitting home when I got sent to Nam , I went to the Big House you just work a job, my social worker keeps me out of jail so the paper reads his name, and he likes it. I was thinking WTF is this crap , I immediately skipped to Metal Daze and was much more impressed. I got to say though Manowar - Death Tone and Cirith Ungol - Atom Smasher might be 2 of the most unique songs ever done. Accept - I'm a Rebel kind of unique as well. Those 3 tracks back to back would be total insanity

I would group the albums in the same three blocs: 1-4., 5-9.,and 10-11. However, my ranking would be different within these blocs. Hail to England is the absolute masterpiece and number one for me. 33 minutes of heavy metal perfection, sound, writing and performance wise as well. In the second bloc I would rate WOTW higher (I didn't hold it in high regard, but lately I kind a discovered its virtues) 🙂. I agree that beginning with FTW the quality wine of Manowar began to get watered, including more fillers, less epic stuff, and when it tried to be epic it lacked the strength of the first 4 albums. So my ranking is:
    1. Hai to England (I would name Bridge of Death as my favourite Manowar song with all its Faustian drama)
    2. Into Glory Ride
    3. Sign of the Hammer
    4. Battle Hymns (it's not higher because it's a bit mixed for me: some incredible epic songs are mixed with some more generic hard rock/metal songs).
    5. Kings of Metal
    6. Triumph of Steel (for its 2nd half 😂)
    7. Warriors of the World (despite the weird covers 😂)
    8. Fighting the World
    9. Louder than Hell (I used to like it really much, but guitar wise it seems a bit dull and I miss that epic power the earlier albums had)
    10. Gods of War
    11. Lords of Steel

The problem is that these 11 albums have 11! permutations, so nearly everybody has his own list.

    1- Into Glory Ride
    2- Hail To England
    3- Battle Hymns
    4- Sign Of The Hammer
    5- Kings Of Metal
    6- Fighting The World
The rest seems like a parody of themselves IMO. First four records are epic!
