  • With many thanks to #andrewhuang for inviting me to collaborate on his film Spacetime where a bunch of composers all score the same amazing sci-fi sequence. I asked myself "instead of hawking all the Spitfire libraries I use, how about I try scoring the whole thing using free samples?".

    Watching 4 producers is always a mixed bag. On one hand it's super interesting to see how different producers work. On the other, it's always a bit "is this really for me?" seeing all the expensive gear and software.
    So, thank you Christian, for being the first 4 Producers guest to acknowledge the vast cost of producing music - orders of magnitude more than any other medium. It's always a pleasure to hear your music and your thought process!

    • @Tony2dH
      @Tony2dH Před 3 lety +10

      Arguably producing video gets more expensive, but good point!

    • @eyre_
      @eyre_ Před 3 lety +5

      @@Tony2dH See I've been thinking about that since I posted my comment, and I think you're right - filmmaking can go higher than music, and music starts cheaper. But, if we're talking about a lone creative in their garage getting to a position where they're unlikely to face immovable limitations as a direct result of their equipment, music is more expensive.
      To my knowledge, the cheapest music can be is the cost of a raspberry pi kit and monitor, if you're satisfied with only making music on FOSS trackers, using freely available chiptune samples.
      But, to go beyond that you'll need an off-the-shelf computer, a DAW, and some means of recording - the best part of £1k.
      It's because of Christian and the folks at Spitfire that I can safely not include plugins on that list.
      At a minimum to start filmmaking you can get away with just a phone camera, and an off-the-shelf computer. Even complex VFX and editing can be achieved now using Blender. Surely a few hundred pounds short of the music bill. For a kid in a garage filming with their friends, needing that much and only that is achievable - they most likely have all that already. The music kit list much less so.
      But, music becomes more expensive as every new genre or style results in more expenditure - not necessarily true for filmmaking.
      So... by these parameters which, while specific, are (according to my highly anecdotal evidence!) probably the parameters in which the majority of beginners operate? (I use 'kid' and 'person' in 'garage' or 'bedroom' mostly interchangeably... feel free to substitute in your own situation!)
      In comparison though, some other media:
      - Text-based art forms like code, (including simple games), poetry and prose at their cheapest can be created and posted to the internet from a phone or raspberry pi.
      - Digital art and most animation is the cost of a decent off-the-shelf laptop plus the cost of a drawing tablet - a beginner would be pushed to spend £1k.
      - To start at 3D is the cost of a PC with a midrange graphics card - expensive at the moment but hopefully eventually less so, once again thanks to the blender foundation.

    • @Tony2dH
      @Tony2dH Před 3 lety +3

      @@eyre_ I only have first hand experience with music making and just second hand experience with the video side, now thinking about it more, I would say for a beginner to get to a decent level both are fairly similar in cost. For music, indeed the starting cost may be slightly cheaper; for most genres I'd say it's basically the cost of a half-decent computer (as Christian demonstrates, a free DAW like Reaper and free plugins are already enough!). Nowadays you can get one for less than 500 and indeed many people already have one anyway. As you argued, for video it's the same, although I think for music you can get by with less processing power than with video, as graphics power is mostly irrelevant.
      Expenses start to pick up once you want to start making recordings, then you'll need an interface, microphone, instruments, cables etc. not to mention acoustic treatment. But I don't think those things are absolutely necessary (depending on the genre some more than others). I'm not as familiar with film equipment, but I think that for all of the music gear there are equivalents in video making at all levels: camera, lenses, lighting equipment, etc. Plus, video-making also includes sound, so microphones etc. can also come into the picture. One can end up combining the costs of photography and sound and, depending on the style, also graphic design/animation.
      All in all, I would place video and music at close first and second place, firmly above the other arts you mentioned. In any case, now's a better time than ever to get started in either! Though for now I'll stick to music as it's expensive enough as it is :p

    • @eyre_
      @eyre_ Před 3 lety +3

      @@Tony2dH Yeah that seems fair. I'd agree with all that. From my experiences filmmaking it's usually easier to come up with a hack to avoid a problem than in music. For an example, see Ian Hubert's videos where he creates shots with crowds of characters walking around massive virtual sets using only blender's realtime Eevee engine and a green screen. However, in music the moment something audibly electronic would be unsuitable, the 'hacks' tend to dry up.
      Also, Reaper isn't actually free, it just doesn't have DRM. Cockos trust their customers with a demo version whose only limitations are described in its EULA - the software doesn't throw up paywalls, just a nag screen. A discounted license is only $60, but it's still an expense. And, it depends on a person being content to work in Reaper when most of the most accessible educational content is for Live, Logic and FL.
      I'd actually make a case that now is actually a pretty bad time to start. Once the current microchip supply/demand cock-up resolves, and it becomes possible to buy a new computer for a reasonable price again (under £500 is surprisingly difficult atm), then it will be a good time to start. The best time there has ever been, in fact.
      To get to my current position in music where I'm well equipped for the genres that pay well that I'm best at, and I could attempt just about any style relatively easily cost about £2500, plus a computer worth about £1500. In hindsight I could have managed that a little cheaper, but not by much - maybe shave off a grand or so. I accumulated that equipment over 8 years. I afforded pretty much all of it by saving on living costs to the extent that at times I became quite ill. If any of it ever needs replacing I'm screwed. The fact that I had to wait for so long to be able to use what I needed held back my learning from really beginning at all for most of those 8 years.
      I apologise for bashing out all these text-wall sob stories, especially under a video that's making such a positive contribution. But, of the hundreds of producers and composers I've met and spoken to, I've only ever met one other in anything like my position. We're rarer than most folks seem to realise - I'm inclined to believe this is because most of us just give up.

    • @Tony2dH
      @Tony2dH Před 3 lety +1

      @@eyre_ No worries, I find it interesting to read and to hear your perspective!
      I realise the costs for music vary widely depending on the genre. Perhaps more so than for video. Indeed for most electronic music (where I have most experience) the initial costs to get good results can be very little with free software or budget synths nowadays, while for other genres it will be difficult to sound as professional on a limited recording budget. For video, I suppose some genres like science fiction might require better props and sets and such to look good, but maybe hacks like the one you mentioned can even the costs out.
      My comment that it's a good time to start mainly comes from the synth/electronica world and music not being my main source of income, so my view may have been too narrow. Anyway, I hope you manage to make a good living without sacrificing your health now and in the future! Best wishes

This idea that you NEED all these expensive tools just to create music is just wrong - There are so many great quality FREE tools out there that work equally well (and sometimes even BETTER) than the equivalent products that go for £100s or even £1000s. The differences between stock/free plugins vs these expensive brands is also always so minor that it really doesn't matter 99.9% of the time (especially if you know what you're doing - an experienced person using full stock Ableton plugins will always sound more professional than an inexperienced person with £1000s of gear).

    Edit: Hold up you are responsible for LABS??? Thank you so much!

    I always learn so much from Christian's videos, but this one was particularly informative, so much so that I had to leave a comment which I normally never do! I love that you just used Logic and LABS - this is exactly the combo I work with so it was incredibly helpful. Feeling inspired now, thanks Christian!

    You are amazingly talented. I could feel tons of emotion just with any one of your layers. Your timing and taste is spot on.

    Hey Christian, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you explaining the *why* behind your decision making process. It's easy to consume a lot of media around music composition and production that consists solely of "just do this", but it's clear you're here to inform, not direct, and explaining your motivations and reasoning is incredibly helpful. Thank you.

    Hi Christian, I loved the video, very well produced, presented and edited. Love it. I hope you still get to enjoy playing with that train set of some sort and get to make libraries you need.

    Just gorgeous, and I absolutely love your walkthrough! As a classical musician, and someone interested in the space between electronic/pop and more classical sensibilities, it is great hearing the thought processes you have, as they resonate with me at a deeper level than the more common song-based walkthroughs.
    Also, as someone who has just started producing music about 6 months ago, it's exciting and helpful to see all the freely available tools and sounds that are available (I fell in love with LABS as soon as I was introduced!), and to see how you use them with such care and depth to craft absolutely stunning musical ideas.
    Truly amazing, and thank you so much!

    As someone who is often more interested in the music than the film, drama or documentary it belongs to, this is fabulous to watch thank you. It teaches me so much about your approach, the background to the sounds and pro tricks. The composition is fantastic too. Thank you for taking the time to show your creative process.

    Pianobook and Spitfire are the best source for Inspirational Sampled Instruments I ever found.
    I started as a late beginner in Guitar, and your channel and your samples just inpired me to continue growing in music in general and start learning music the right way.
