For the colder months, I have a grey cashmere rollback that still looks new and has seen me through a decade of winters now. Two gorgeous long charcoal grey wool knitted skirts - one fluted, one straight - that never fail to get compliments, and whether paired with flat boots or high heeled boots, the look is always elegant. And because its charcoal grey, its the perfect colour foil for any other colour of sweater or boots. I love those skirts so much that I was able to find the same ones online years later, so now I own two of each. And of course, being winter, I have a timeless MaxMara coat (101801 coat), and a cream puffer jacket that have seen me through many winters and they will continue to do so. Knowing how to look after your clothes and footwear, and knowing how to store them will make all the difference in being able to enjoy your favourite and classic items for years, especially if you have invested in quality items.

I love a trench coat but for me, a navy trench coat is my favourite. I have never found a neutral trench that looked good on me. By the way, Burberry also makes navy trench coats and they’re fabulous.

Great tips! The only difference I would add is for a purse: I think that if your outfit is already quite neutral, this is where you can add a bolder statement, to treat the purse as the highlight piece. I sew, knit and male most of my own clothes (I studied fashion design in my undergrad and have been sewing since a teenager), but this summer, I made a purse in a bright green. I wore it almost every day because it’s such a perfect colour to highlight grey, brown, black, almost everything went with the green purse because it didn’t match with anything. And I was constantly stopped in the street to ask where I got the purse. I think we’re trying for timeless clothing but also balancing that with personal style.

Silk turtlenecks from Lilysilk are wonderful and elegant for fall/winter, blazers yes, handbags, (my obsession) and Nike sneakers or loafers. Being retired, don’t wear dresses anymore, except a linen shirtdress in summer. My timeless pieces are white jeans or white or beige trousers, white leather sneakers, and a Chanel bag, the Trendy CC is my favorite style.

My husband and I recently went to London and Paris on vacation, and I couldn't believe how many women wore trench coats! One of the many wonderful surprises of our trip! I fell in love with the look and after many try ons, bought one of my very own. Wore it for several days in London, and have greatly enjoyed wearing it back home in the U.S. Also love how chic and classy it makes me feel! Highly recommend investing in one...instantly improves your confidence!!

I would recommend Acquascutum instead of Burberry for a trench. Burberry's lining is too recognizable and it becomes a target for thieves, you can't relax when you need to take it off in a restaurant, etc.

I agree . But also Burberry doesn’t have quite the same cachet that it once did - too ubiquitous , rather like Barbour . My father had an Acquascutum for years which some burglars left behind . He always wore it with a trilby hat and looked like Frank Sinatra .

I have a couple of Burberry trench coats and was unable to find a tan color that was flattering for my skin tone. My solution is to use a scarf close to my face, in colors that are flattering. My other trench coats are navy and a gorgeous red, which I love wearing on a grey and gloomy day. Longevity is perfect, too. My “newest” Burberry is twelve years old. Aside from my Burberry coats, I think my most timeless pieces are silk scarves. Some are expensive investment pieces, some made by local artisans, and others just caught me eye.

I have to say that my best timeless Items I have are wool red winter coat (I think 12years old), black beret, then jeans jacket (probably not really french style 😀), but what really always stays long in my closet is a skirt. Skirt always fits - if i am extra 5kg or minus 5kg. I have some favourite once in A shape and i can style them changing upper part. So if I am not scared to spent money on something then it is skirt. If you want to wear a scarf when the weather is hot, you can drape it so that it doesn't touch your skin. I have several long, lightweight silk scarves that I can drape around my top's neckline loosely. You can use a light brooch to keep it in place this way: wrap the scarf over your top, then secure the two tails into the open clasp (don't put the pin through the silk or you'll make holes). Then fasten the pin in your top and fasten the clasp. Your brooch is acting like a scarf keeper.

Hi Angela! This is magnificent advice!! I am tempted as everyone by pieces of clothing that may be trendy and not timeless. My elegant, timeless pieces are high-quality neutral coats that are long, well-tailored, and neutral. For me, black, charcoal gray, or cool-tone beige paired with a cashmere or linen scarf. Also good quality boots (1 tall and 1 short pair since we live in a climate where it rains 6 months of the year.)I also love ballet flats for work! So classy. These are great fashion tips. I have a favourite cashmere rollback sweater that I've had for years and couldn't go through a winter without it for so many reasons. It looks great under all my coats, and other than an evening look, it can take me just about anywhere, and precisely because of its colour. Charcoal grey is a colour I love to wear in the colder months, its my favourite colour staple for winter and fall because its a perfect foil for so many colours. Think Grey with chocolate brown suede (boots, pants, skirt, handbag) for some casual chicness, for example. Or how about charcoal grey with burgundy, taupes, creams, navy blue, red, orange, green, pinks, or black - all work well. I tend for solids in winter and my patterns are usually in my scarves, and charcoal grey makes such a good background for that. Charcoal grey never sounds boring to me. It's perfect. ;-)

For travel, especially European: I love a gray V-neck cashmere sweater. A neutral color silk blouse that can be worn day or night, with jeans or dress pants. Also a brown or cognac color leather crossbody bag that will carry all the essentials.
You give great advice for dressing in Paris! I am studying up! I would love to know what you would wear in the French country as well though. I will be touring around France after I visit Paris for a couple of days this summer.

Do you suggest a certain length of trench coat? I have one that is black and goes to my knee. It seems to do well in warmer climates

My timeless item is a black button down shirt. (Same as white recommended.) Would you have a suggestion for stylish sneakers for traveling in Paris? I can't wear flats but I don't want to stand out in colorful American sneakers. 😊 Thank you.

Hi Anne Marie :) As long as the sneakers are not too colorful you can wear pretty much whatever you like. Just make sure you feel comfortable. A lot of people in Europe (Paris including) wear the Adidas superstar line because the are durable and overall affordable. These have been a huge trend in the past years. Another option can be Geox sneakers. They are even more affordable. I don't know if you have them in the US. They make breathable sneakers mostly: very comfortable and suitable for the summer months because they are very light so you can walk a lot in these. Then you can always have New Balance. I think you have those in the US. These are also trendy in most European cities and are a great option for walking or even Converse sneakers in white. These are used very often too. (and beige, dark blue or black and white). So don't think too much about it. As long as it's not too colorful i.e. with too many colors; sneakers are the best option to explore the city. Choose the ones that will feel most comfortable to you. xoxo

Parisian style secret #11: don’t wear those horrible fake eyelashes. They are, by definition, fake and unnatural, they don’t flatter anyone.
Striped T shirts are what American women think French women wear from French movies. Don’t follow the cliche :-)

    • @Frenchforaday
      @Frenchforaday  Pƙed rokem

Hi Judit and thanks for watching! :) I fully agree about the fake eyelashes. I never liked the way they look. I should admit that in the past years I started to see more young French women starting to wear lash extensions and heavier makeup. But overall it looks very tasteful. About the striped top: I have to disagree with you. This used to be a trend 10 years ago and still I see so many women in France wearing stripped top. I usually spent a lot of time in France and I think this trend hasn't changed over the years. Maybe American movies are exaggerating it a little bit but that's the magic of Hollywood that we all love. ::) Have a great day!

Love all these tips! The only thing I differ on is jeans. I mainly wear white or ivory jeans but when I choose blue, I prefer light to medium washes. I wear light, neutral colored tops and when paired with dark denim, I find this to be too much of a contrast in colors for me. đŸ€ Thank you for this video!

Hello and thank you so much for watching my video! :) White and ivory jeans give a very chic and expensive look. I rarely wear those but I like to see them on others. Have a great weekend! xoxo
