I grew up in one house until just two years ago where I moved to the city away from home. Growing up and even into adulthood, I loved finding these spitballs in my field in summer. I just called them spitbugs and when me or my dog ran through the fields, I often had like five of these spit balls on my legs, so I found the bugs in them, and took some time to observe. I dont think they're as far north as I am now, so its now a nostalgic thing, but i love they did a bit on a very nostalgic bug I grew up around.

Froghoppers are in the family Cercopidae. The "bubbles" are actually excreted through whats called Malpighian tubules. This is an organ found inside the insect and is mostly used to absorb nutrients after food has passed through the foregut and midgut. However, many insects modify and evolve to use their Malpighian tubules for additional uses such as Cecropidae releasing this bubble stuff and Chrysopidae producing silk.

Oh! I never knew spittlebugs were the younger forms of froghoppers! I also never knew they were called froghoppers. I called them thorn jumpers haha. Thanks for connecting the dots between these two cute insects!

I think I saw these as a child! I have a weird feeling of incredible familiarity, with something I had completely forgotten about.
