It's the ego. It's that closure he didn't get from the ex going behind his back. Even if she said it was her and not him, it's affected his ego to the point where he needs validation from the one who made him feel inadequate. The contentment comes from within once he truly accepts that he was not the issue and that she just had her own issues.
You just perfectly explained why i was out and about so much after my ex cheated i was beyond egotistical. Thank god ive calmed down a lot and hope to continue but thank you for putting my thoughts of why i acted how i did into actual words

I visited my male friend, we stayed together for 5 days sleeping in the same room talking laughing and playing music. Nothing nothing happened I trusted him. Until his sudden death 2020 , MHSRIP., he was still my best friend, treated him like a brother.

My x and I never got a chance. We were young, he was in the service, lost contact and then he showed back up but I was dating someone. Now 40 years later we have been texting. But he is not interested as far as I can tell even though if asked he denies. But actions speak louder. Now he is making the moves but I am ignoring him.
