I have a UGEE tablet and love doing these vector portraits but every single time I do one, I gotta scrap it because it doesn’t come close in terms of quality. I definitely have to practice more shading/highlights. I also have to stop comparing my art to yours. I’m having trouble isolating the selected group, like when I try to delete the colored background and keep the color on the person I’m illustrating, the whole color ends up getting deleted

When selecting all of the same color there's a faster way to do it. Use the direct selection tool (white arrow) and click on any black line. Then go to Select in the menu bar, scroll down to select, and grab same color. All of the black lines will now be selected. Group them. Move them to a new layer (This can be temporary) and lock that layer. Then biz as usual. Great tut.

Money E the reason why that happens is because your lines are not connected and one of the lines goes into the person

he explained it at the start of the video. its about putting more pressure and less and when you flick the pen at the end it should make a sharp line
