- It's true, you don't normally play chords on bass guitar. BUT, you can compose, jam, improvise, learn harmony, and just have so much fun with them.

𝄢 Dan 🙏 - Hudba
These lessons have taught me so much chord theory that I'm telling my band's guitarists the names of the chords they're playing and the scales they're in, thanks for that lol
😂 careful…
Excellent point. Don’t want a bassist to tell a guitar player which chords to play. Had that experience one time where a guitar player played a dominant 7 against a major 7 chord and had to explain he had it wrong 😆
@@OnlineBassCourses?😅😅 Might resent it Much?!??
HECK YEA!!!! Keep it up BASS MAN!
That's basically what I said to Dan about..
Great teachers are hard to come by
I pity da fools that don't learn bass from this man.
Thanks for this. I appreciate you.
😂
I was looking for exact that kind of lesson. Thank You very much :)
Dan, you're the best teacher hands down anywhere. I can't believe how much I have learned from you. Thank you for all you do
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate that, Tim.
@@OnlineBassCourses Same here. I get so much from your lessons and am playing more confidently every day with your suggestions. You give us tricks in the bag to use every time we play so that we don't just chug root notes all day.
@@workthenplayvery kind of you to say - thanks very much!
I think you're one the best teachers . I am starting to watch your videos and they've taught me a lot. Thank u so much Dan. You're a keeper and keep it going.
I really appreciate your comment - thanks very much!
Great lesson Dan, really enjoyed this. I love how you invite us in your studio, show us some neat things…and all free of charge, no sign up and constantly bombarding us with emails after. Breath of fresh air.
😊
My pleasure.
Great video! Just what I needed! 👍🏾
This one's quite helpful. Thanks Dan
Fantastic video that is really helpful for someone who's never played chords on a bass before!
Brother Dan is ice cold forreal! Fantastic bassist!!!
Great lesson,very helpful.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
Dan, I have a few of your courses already. Always a pleasure to see what you publish. Thanks
Thanks very much for the support. 🙏🙏
so much easy to understand ... thank you so much.
Great lesson even for the beginner like myself. It gives me the drive to learn more each day and reach that level of command on the fret board. Thank you so much.
Great to hear!
Really a very sublime lesson. There are so many possibilities you have revealed. Thanks!
Thanks!
One of the best lessons for chords on bass!!! Great!!! Thank You!!!
Thanks, Wolfgang!
Yes! Thank you. I’m always looking for bass videos pertaining to chords. I feel like I can’t find many, especially ones that are taught in a way I can quickly grasp.
Indirectly indubitably😢
Very nice Dan. Thanks
Thanks Dan! I certainly like the details in the way you demonstrated how chords can be played. The order of playing the notes with your right hand was helpful too. Showing how to barre notes on bass is something I rarely see and glad you covered it. I had problems barring on guitar years ago, I find barring on bass seems easier for me.
Thanks, Don.
I like the iron claw grip. G major is good. Interesting bass cord video, very useful fretboard diagrams as well as bass cords, love the available shapes ..
Thanks.. your lessons are really helpful.. this is what I've been looking for for quite a long time.. 👏
Thanks very much - I’m glad to hear that.
Hi Dan, thanks for your sublime explanation of cords on bass. Simple and very useful!!
That’s very kind - thanks for watching!
Wow this is so cool. Big thanks Dan & free PDFs too! Beautiful man beautiful👌🙏🎵🎸🎶
Thanks! Many of my lessons have free backing tracks/PDFs. Check them out on my site. 🙏
THANK YOU! This is the exact lesson and PDF I've been looking for.
Glad to hear it!
So detail.. thanks a lot..
Great information. I was a guitar player for years then quit. Now my church needed a bass player so I am doing that but I play the bass like a guitarist which includes chords and different voicings.
superbe lesson. Thank you !!
🙏👍
This tutorial was exactly what I needed, thank you!
Cool!
Good one Dan,I love chords. I'm happy to see how much your channel has grown. You've earned it!
Thanks for your support from the beginning, Kev!
@@OnlineBassCourses I recently got a bass VI so chords can be readily applied.
Another great lesson! Thank you 😊
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Thank you so much for posting this, just got started in my first band and love this style of playing bass and hope to dive in the deep end and learn as many techniques and skills along the way brother. I've studied so many bassist and there abilities and hope to be as good as some of the best, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins and even the great Victor Wooten himself, but there are so many I can't list them, but what inspirations as just this basic video as a tool. Thank you again.....!

A very valuable teaching Sir ... Thank you very much sir🎼❣️🎸❣️🎸❣️

Learned so much here! Thank you
Glad to hear that!
Dan, thank you very much for your free lessons. I recently started getting serious about learning bass after doing a lot of research on the web and on YT. The first time I saw your lessons I knew you should be my teacher, so after my vacation I plan to buy your "From Beginner to Bassist" course when I return in September. Also, I bought your books 'Fingerstyle bassTechnique' and 'Creative bass Technique' to get started. I can't wait to enroll in your course, but for now, let me enjoy my holidays Thank you, Dan.
Enjoy the holidays and thanks very much!
Just started playing bass recently and at this moment Im feeling kinda lost. I have to admit that this vido gave me some hope as the way you explained everything made me feel like I can really learn all of this if I try hard enough. Thank you for your work Sir!
Of course you can. Your absolutely can. Urea normal (and easy) to feel overwhelmed and discouraged as there’s a lot to learn. Just pick something and go for it. You must commit to regular practice though or nothing will happen. You can do it! 👊
Thanks Dan! Much appreciated!!!😀 Hello from across the pond! - Brent Vermont, USA
Thanks for watching!
Wow this was very helpful and enlightening thanks
🙏
That was a great lesson! Thanks
🙏
Dan, I've learned sho much from you! I use a lot of what I've learned from you at church too!
That’s great, Frank! Happy to see that you’re applying it in band situations.
Great video, and I’ve never considered a vintage Ibanez bass, but I absolutely love the one you’re playing and I’m determined to get one.
Thanks! This was a very random but lucky purchase (and very cheap!).
I use a lot of faux power chords, and a few of these chords with the third or minor third and a fifth on many songs, it helps fill in for sound with our 3-piece band. For Knockin' on Heaven's Door I play a lot of these chords while the guitar takes a solo (plus I sing it.) I also use a ton of just octave grace notes.
I also liked hearing you doing the hammer-on with both the vocal mic and amp recording; when playing them I hear the other half of the string sounding, but of course not get to the pickup and amp. A lot of folks must not capture the other half of the string, but it's quite normal to hear those odd tones when playing.
Very very helpful. I watched the abbreviated video in Shorts. This is much easier to follow
Thanks, Brian. Yes, the full lesson always will be.
Well detailed… thank you for sharing..
Thanks for watching.
Muito bom, ótima aula .... 👌👌👏👏💪💪

This is a bit higher than my level. Even then, the lesson is so good that I have watched to the end. Dan is one of the best teachers. When he introduced me to chromatic scale, I began to see my music world changing .... thank you very much
Thanks for watching and I’m glad you got something from the lesson.
Nice lesson with clear explanation.
Many thanks!
great video man, tyvm

Thank you
Within the last year or so I have just started to learn some music theory. That has been the game changer in helping to play and understand how to make music using music theory. But I struggled to understand chords on bass, how they work, how to create those great sounds a bass can make playing chords. And like that this one video took the mystery out playin chords for me. After watching this video now I am creating and playing my own basslines based off of the notes in chords. Thank you so much Mr. Hawkins!!!!!
Really happy to hear that! I’ll do more chord videos soon.
The absolute best way to explain what music theory is in my personal opinion is that music theory puts sound into a a way to see the frequency.
Understanding chord structure made learning the fretboard so much easier. Everything in this world is built from patterns. Know the patterns and you will never find that last note lol.
I love this bass chords thank Dan

merci beaucoup pour le travail mon professeur {depuis Paris}

Thanks, Greg!
Ohhh gosh amazing I’m going to try this on my Uke EBass
Have fun!
I've been playing since I was a teenager and never really played chords, this would be so much easier for some songs and jamming.

hi from france really thx for your video i try to learn bass
Bonjour! Enjoy learning bass. It’s a great instrument.
What do you mean we don't play things like that?!? Every listen to Paul McCartney? Billy sheehan? Flea? They do this kind of work all over the place. Another great lesson!! Thank you for your time!
Thanks! One can do whatever they like, of course.
@OnlineBassCourses "The motivation of humans is to attain a union with the Devine. This striving reflects itself in all areas of human endeavors. Musical expression is a God-given gift. We must love it and cherish it."

The f#dim sick sound loved it
years ago i had an old school ibanez roadstar just like it, made it fretless with new electronics
Great stuff as always Dan. Could you do a lesson on how to determine what notes to play when at a non-diatonic chord? We know we can play the 7 notes from the mode when on a chord that is in the key and we can play the chord tones when on a non-diatonic chord. What if the music is on a non-diatonic chord and we want to expand beyond the chord tones, is there a method we can use other than trial and error?
Good idea. 👍
I would love to get a grate R&B Singer to sing beautifully to some bass chords at the intro of a song. And plus she could sing a small part of a melody while the bass plays it with vibrato just like the singer. Normally you would expect a keyboard player to do that, as well as a guitar player. But to me, I think it would be very special to have a bass player doing that.
when i was beginner i watch his video but i notice he teach fast so its hard for me to catch up so i never watch a video of him when i already know the major and minor scale also from ionian o locrian now i can catch up ahha and need deep uunderstanding now i watch his video to learn more shapes tnx for the free lesson sir
🙏👍
Great lesson, very helpful... feel like I could also really benefit from a lesson to help with the whole thumb picking technique, do you have any on that?
Thank you. I think there’s something in this lesson but I should do a full lesson: czcams.com/video/uyNzEChESv8/video.htmlsi=Jn3-7iVj-uCeH6U2
Another helpful, high quality lesson. Thank you!
Is you bass missing a knob?
Thanks! A remnant of a previous botched job…
great vids, thank you :)
Soft🎉
I second what Dan said about if it starts to hurt, stop. I practiced some extreme-stretch chords, went too far and ended up suffering with De Quervain's tenosynovitis which put me out of action for several weeks.
I ended up with trigger finger on my fretting hand and hand surgery on 2 finger tendons.
I have had quadruple bypass and I tell you the pain from hand surgery was worse.
I have a question about your gear: is it a Roadstar from the '80s the bass you're playing there? DiMarzio pickups? And what sort of strings did you put on?
Thanks!
Spot on! 1982 Ibanez Roadster with DiMarzio DP126 pickups. I’m using Elites Stadiums 45-105.
as smart as you are good, getting a lot from your lessons here.
🙏🙏
Don't normally play guitar, but when I do I prefer BASS guitar
Hi there, i just bought a bass.. thanks for the lessons. My question is how bass players move from one chord to another.. like a arpeggio. For example from Em to D etc
They just know each arpeggio in a few different positions all over the next. Then you follow the chord progression which you learn by ear or by reading a chart. Chords and arpeggios match up.
@@OnlineBassCourses much appreciated. Thank you!
Do you have beginner courses for someone that's starting out for the first time
Hi, Walter. Yes, I do. It’s called From Beginner To Bassist and you can find it on my site www.onlinebasscourses.com. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Dan..
You can drop off the fifth and play with the root and the tenth?
Sure can!
I've been watching your videos Dan as often as I can...
Learned Georgy porgy from Toto.
Is that song easy or maybe I have gotten better,?
Your thoughts 🤔
@@petermcguinness5281 I've no idea what your standard was before and is now. If you're playing regularly and learning new things then you're almost certainly getting better. Keep it up!
Just recently got into a band.
Relocating to be near. I've been told that I am good, but didn't really think I was.
So I have been watching channel.
Got to give it to you sir.
You help inspire me to do better.
How do I bar and use a finger for third it’s impossible
To bar with your third finger? No it’s not impossible. Might be difficult but not impossible. It will probably take you a few weeks of regular practice. It will get easier the more you gradually do it. Best of luck.
Where is the pdf link pal?
At the top of the video description. 👍
Damn that bass sounds good what is it
1982 Ibanez Roadster with DiMarzio DP126 pickups
Please the pdf
Link in description…
my mid finger cant reach 3rd on mayor chord T_T even if i can its muted
Can you try 4th finger? Don’t worry though, some of these stretches are hard. Don’t go through the pain barrier! Do take a rest if feel any strain.
im tiny finger
Don’t worry. Play higher up the neck and gradually work on the gaps between your fingers. It takes time.
My fingers aren’t long enough to do this
They don’t need to be long (mine aren’t). It’s mainly the stretches which you can most definitely work on (over time). You can do it.
Bro.... Bass could have tabs...🥹
For all the music I’m improvising on the spot?? Do you really think I have that much time in the day to TAB that out for you as well as create these free lessons and free PDFs?? I honestly think you have no clue what goes into making these lessons.
Sorry for the rant - I don’t mean to be negative. You’ll grow as a musician if you do some of this work yourself - ESPECIALLY working things out by ear. Takes some practice but it will transform your playing.
@@OnlineBassCourses no no no, I was saying like BASS COULD HAVE TABS??? my bad, a question mark could change so much lol
@@doughdog7 😂 No more tequila! No, more tequila! (Punctuation matters.) 😂
@@doughdog7I understand your situation my friend. Tabs are nice when you're learning but tabs will destroy your long term abilities. The absolute best practice is ear training to hear the notes and play by ear.
Remember that the creator of this channel makes these lessons for free so to tell someone who has been playing for decades and gives free lessons is no different than staring a gift horse in the mouth. There are many things I wish would be taught or shown but I know my place also.
You have to be able to step out of body in life and enter other people's shoes to have empathy and understand their situation.
If I could give you any advice it would be to get your technique rock solid. Get the scales and modes down and learn no music just pure discipline and when you have the technical aspects down you will hear something and play it with ease.
I had to undo many years of playing and go back to the beginning all because I didn't focus on technique first time around. Now I am an old man who is fighting arthritis and many other ailments that make what I should already know harder to learn. Now I have technique and look back at how horrible of a bass player I was for many years thinking I was good.
Have you heard from WarioWare before?
No
@@OnlineBassCourses What about Ni Hao, Kai-Lan?
Sorry, it’s a no again!
You can be shorter and clearer, those who understand will understand, those who don't understand won't understand anyway.
Thanks for the advice but, luckily, I know my audience better than you do.
Continue in the same way, a 17 minute video, time is money :) Regards from Germany❤❤❤
@@nerginsali4363 I don't really understand the comment but thanks! 🙏
10th? ahahahahah it's always referred to as a 3rd and never a 10th. It doesnt matter what interval you play the 3rd, it's still a 3rd.
That’s not true but, whatever.
@@OnlineBassCourses It is true. NO one has ever referred to a CHORD TONE as a 10th! It is the 3rd of the chord no matter where you play it!
@@cgrimes72 Ah... You didn't quite say that in your original comment. I thought you were referring to intervals.
@@OnlineBassCourses Why would you think that? The video clearly shows you making chords, and talking about chords, and the title is chords on the bass. Then you are referring to 10ths as you make the chord shapes. All I am saying is that when talking about chords, one never says 10ths. It's always 3rd. As far as intervals go, why would u think the discussion was about intervals? The video is clearly talking about chords! And anything outside of a THEORY CLASSS talking about intervals, one should be thinking PERFORMANCE and PERFORMANCE is dealing with chords! and actual playing and NOT THEORY.
I get so many comments that it’s quite difficult sometimes to know exactly what people are referring to (and to remember the video itself let alone the specific section!).
When talking about how to voice a chord, you absolutely can say ‘this is a 10th’. Chords are made up of intervals so they’re integral to the discussion. Adding a 3rd or a 10th into a chord does matter. It’s a subtle difference but an important one.
Most professional musicians will describe it this way so it’s not wrong. If you want to describe it a different way that’s absolutely fine by me. Do what works for you!
Thanks for the comment, Chad! 👍🙏
This kind of playing is totally unusable in music, in band. This is only poor playing on stand alone bass without any company. Just you are doing this wrong
I think I actually mention that in the video but I doubt you made it that far. Thanks for the comment though. You can absolutely play like this if you want. It’s great for composing, having fun, learning about harmony, and a whole host of other things. 🙏👍
