An all time classic and criminally underrated.
I especially like the ending it's got a lot of a father's love.
Only you are underrating it criminally.
@@Vile_Entity_3545 no idea what that means. I loved the movie.
Reminds me of Looper. I saw it as a kid, thank you all for reminding me of this.
This was a great movie. Dennis Quaid hardly ever made a bad movie.
The Right Stuff and Innerspace are particularly good. His Doc Holiday in Wyatt Earp is fantastic.
Quaid's Sam Houston in the 2004 version of The Alamo. Everyone is great in it, actually.
Enemy Mine was great too
With "Jaws 3-D" ('83) and "The Day After Tomorrow" ('04) (among others), I'd say Quaid's made his share of stinkers, but his track record is generally pretty good, and he's very likeable on-screen.
Even Jaws 3 is a good laugh to be honest.
"A---Aurora Borealis? At this time of year! At this time of day! In this part of the country! Localized entirely within your steamed ham radio?!?"
Yes.
May I see it?
@@chrisw6164....no
Comment of the year.
Seymour, I'm being murdered!
No mother, it's just the northern lights.
Such an underrated movie.
This was my introduction to Jim Caviezel and he quickly became one of my favourite actors. The Count of Monte Cristo put him at number one.
Check out Angel Eyes... with J Lo.
I know several households that watch The Count of Monte Cristo regularly. Mine included.
Pay it Forward. Deja Vu. JC classics
"The Count of Monte Cristo" ('02) is a great movie... if you never read or have no attachment to or affection for the book. As a movie, it's very well done. As an adaptation, it's abysmal to the point of insulting. I try to appreciate it as its own thing and pretend the two projects just happen to share a title, some character names, and some broad plot points... 😁
I can't do the same for Jackson's "The Hobbit" trilogy. Those movies are just wanton butchery of the source material...😧
Also checkout Highwaymen
Dennis Quaid, with a heavy Brooklyn accent: “I’M A FIREFIGHTAH!!!”
it makes perfect sense that he's the only one who remembers the original timeline since he's the one who caused the changes in the past , so for him the 'original' version has to exist otherwise he wouldn't have said the things he did through the radio . also the villain who got his hand blew off must also have remembered having a hand before coming to the house with a gun , otherwise he would have wore a prosthetic hand , and wouldn't seem so surprised to see his hand disappearing
It's called a paradox and being involved in the eye of the storm allows everyone involved to remember both except the original person.
My (now adult) son and I have watched this movie dozens of times over the years, and soon we'll be adding my teenage grandson to the viewing party. The ultimate father/son relationship movie. For what it's worth, there was a TV series version that was 'good enough' featuring a similar plot but this time it's daughter. It was canceled an episode or two early and a resolution was crammed in, but the showrunners were able to release a short coda online that really sewed it together.
I was born and raised in Queens. My Dad died on my 20th birthday, in January, 1969. We were Mets fans. That WAS my “era”, so to speak. This film hit EVERY point of what 1969 was, and so very much brought forth powerful, reflective feelings, because it truly WAS like reliving it all. When the shoe polish ‘incident’ becomes THE crucible of belief, confirming Frank’S story, the tears were running.WHY, Dave? PURE accuracy. I was there again. Naturally, it is one of my MOST beloved films, ever. Thanks for bringing it back to the attention of today’s less deeply oriented types.
Oof, I come from a firefighter/police family with grandfathers and uncles a lot like these guys; I love this movie unashamedly and it hits harder the older I get.
The ending gets me every time.
Me too, the tears won't stop flowing! 😥
Same with me.
I'm a ham radio operator.
While there were some issues with how we actually communicate, it was close enough.
Like you said, it was done so well it was easy to ignore minor problems.
Me and my family watched this all the time, one of my personal favorites!
This is one of the first father-son moments that got me in tears. The slow burn to old Dennis Quaid saving the day is fantastic. Awesome and underrated movie, thanks for bringing it up.
Thanks, Dave. I bought this on DVD when my son was about 10, and my daughter 8. My wife and I had seen the movie in a theater, and both enjoyed it, and thought the kids would enjoy it. My son immediately loved it, it took a second watching a couple of years later for my daughter who then also enjoyed it.
This is a really wonderful film, and now I have to go and dig up the old DVD and watch it again.
I watched it once 20 years ago but I remember almost everything this video talk about.
It's a testament about how good this movie is.
I remember really enjoying this one when it came out. I've always liked Dennis Quaid as an actor and it was the first time I'd ever seen Jim Caveziel in anything and I liked his performance as well.
Wow. Coincidence. I just watched this a couple days ago after ordering the blu-ray. I had fond memories of it and thought it should be in my collection. Great movie. Not having seen it in 20+ years, it holds up pretty well.
Excellent movie. It has a truly amazing premise. The acting is first-rate.
One of my.all-time favorite movies. Easily in My top ten for Father's Day. A top notch masterclass in writing scenes with emotional payoffs. Jim Caveizel and Dennis Quaid are in peak form. Also a movie that features a beautiful father/son story arc, so rare in movies and so desperately needed. I still get tears in my eyes when Quaid says "I'm still hearing, Chief." 😢 Rest in Peace, Andre Braugher.
Has there ever been a story involving altering the past that has completely “made sense”? There’s always going to be a certain amount of “just go with it”.
Yeah, even Back to The Future wasn't perfect
There is a Mexican film called "Los Crono Crimenes"(2007) or "Time Crimes" in English. It has a simple plot but is very good and handles the time travel extremely well.
The Lazarus Project tv series.
Loved it on release and watched it recently with my 13 year olds, as you said it really holds up and I found it even better than I remember, the use of the northern lights was a bit ropey but the execution was great with a fantastic storyline and acting. The 13 years really enjoyed it too 😊
One of the few movies that make me cry a bit. Up there with Its A Wonderful Life.
Time for a rewatch. Once you started talking about it, I remembered seeing it long ago.
I watched this in my senior English class in highschool. Everytime the bell rang for lunch the whole class groaned because we wanted to keep watching
You nailed it. A positive Father-Son story. One of my favorites!
Because of his simultaneous knowledge of the past & the present, Jim Caviziel's character exists in a superposition where he has to immediately experience the past to remain in the present. Physical objects don't exist in that state, & therefore have things happen in real time. It's a brilliant example of how two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Memories are technically not Physical Objects, & so are capable of occupying the same space at the same time.
One of the movies, along with "Big Fish" that makes me miss my dad.
Keep the obscure film suggestions coming. It's giving me stuff to watch.
Wow... thanks for telling me about this movie! This is really interesting!
Edit: Also... Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel (Jesus) .... wow!
Jim is a religious nutcase now!
Man I haven't seen this one in years, but I remember really liking it. Might watch it again this weekend.
one of my fav films
This movie is so underrated. It's definitely one of my favorite movies.
Such a great movie, still one of my favorite sci-fi thrillers of all time! The scene where the dad is sending a message to his son to let him know he's alright is my favorite emotionally.
Spot on, Dave!
I adore this movie so much, and the big thing holding it together is both the fact that the story, for all the second guessing one can do about its pseudo science, is so well done and so well paced that the viewer is watching and needing to know what happens next instead of sitting back as a distant observer and going "Yeah, right." Plus Quaid and Caviezel sell us on their characters and the story with brilliant performances full of heart and drama. And now I want to watch it again. 😛 Thanks, Dave!
You covered Frequency!!! This is one of my faves from back in the day. :) My daughters really liked this movie when I showed it to them, my oldest was quick to point out that there was a traditional family at the center of the story. Glad to hear you liked it too. As for why they were the only ones noticing change, I always assumed it was because they were the ones doing the changing. Everybody else may be walking around thinking they're misremembering things. 😅🤣
The scene when father and son bond over the radio hit me right in the feels.
I watched the beginning of it, including the baseball predictions, but got distracted by events in real life. On my 'to rewatch' list.
Thanks for doing this one Dave. One of my all-time top five favorite movies. What the mainstream media will not ever admit is that most fathers are great fathers, most fathers are absolutely vital to a boy's life. That's what this movie is about and that's what makes it so powerful.
There's a Korean TV adaptation of this premise called Signal.
It's alright although it can be frustrating at times as the characters have to be slow to catch onto things for the sake of runtime.
Dave Cullens, I really enjoy when you do these reviews of older films. It's a nice escapism/story time for me. Wishing you God's blessings from FL, USA!
I watched this last Saturday night for the first time in over a decade loved it forgot how great it was
I saw this in the theater with a few friends on a whim, without any knowledge of the plot, and it blew us all away! Great movie!
Agreed. Great performances from both Quaid and Caviezel.
one of my favs...and, a pretty original idea for a time travel plot...
I think the idea behind the letters appearing on the desk is that the changes are happening incrementally. As Frank burns the desk, only those burns have happened, so John only sees those burns. Contrast that to Frank's survival, which was an all-or-nothing, binary change that took effect immediately.
Does it make much sense? No but, as you said, it doesn't really need to in order to sell the story.
I really like this movie. Underrated for sure. It definitely hits hard if you lost your dad. I wish there was a way I could talk to him again and somehow change history so that he's still alive today. Of course in my case he died of ALS so there's no way I could have prevented it, but still.. a nice thought, and a very cool and unique movie.
Staying with Dennis Quaid, how about a review of 'Inner Space'?
Oh Captain Holt we will miss you
I remember watching this movie with my mom, and that scene at the end, where the house was changing, and I remember thinking aloud, "The house is becoming a home." My mom asked, "Why would you say that?" And I responded, "John's mother is alive, so he met Samantha. John's father lived long enough to teach him about being a man. So, John and Samantha are probably married. A wife is what makes a house into a home."
Beautifully said.
I passed on it in the theater at the time, but when it came to Cable, I immediately loved it.
*“…Julia with Autumn 🍂 and Winter Breeze 💨…” - Eurythmics.*
Interestingly, a similarly themed Korean film titled _Ditto_ came out the same year as _Frequency_ (2000).
That one's supernatural HAM radio snafu is caused by an eclipse, which allows a female student in 1979 to speak to a male student in 2000.
It's more a romance than a father son relationship. And while I'm at it, this _ALSO_ resembles the concept of 2006's terrible Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock film _The Lake House,_ which was itself a remake of Korea's _Il Mare,_ released the same year as both _Frequency_ and _Ditto._
Go watch the Korean tv show Signal (2016) it's based on Frequency.
FWIW, there's also a rather popular Japanese anime series (circa 2011, I think) called Steins;Gate that was adapted from a visual novel/PC game. It employs a variation of this idea where a small group of eccentric college students accidentally stumble upon a method of sending text messages into the past. One of my favorites.
I liked The Lake House.
I like the Lazarus Project tv series.
@@JO-qn8gy I like New York in June. How about you?
I remember watching this one years ago and liking it, now I have to find it again. Thanks Dave.
With an appearance of a very young Michael Cera as Gordy Jr
Thanks Dave. Great review. Yes, I vaguely remember seeing this and the enjoyable fun factor. Nice being reminded of this piece. Best wishes
Dave, I absolutely agree with you. This is one of the best timey-whimey movies of all time. And I love the characters and the actors portraying them. It always makes me cry with John when he finds his dad and helps him to live. Great work, Dave. Keep it up.
Ohh another cool one I must check out!
Thanks Dave!
It's been a really long time since I saw "Frequency." This was the movie that put Jim on my radar. Fantastic movie.
I saw that movie once it was broadcasted on German tv and liked it very much, Dennis Quade being one of my favorite actors helped too. I forgot much of the details you've shown here and now am eager to rewatch with my grown up son.
Frankly: Of all online filmcritiques I like you're critiques are 100 % spot on to my own preferences and likings. You analyze so brilliantly so it's always a pleasure to watch. Thank you!
I saw this one in the cinema back in the day. Another great time travel film is Timescape / Grand Tour: Disaster in Time (1992), which has recently been released on Blu-ray for the first time by Unearthed Films.
I love videos like this. reminding me of films I have seen but not for years. another to add to the blu ray collection. thank you good sir.
This is one of my favorite films.!
I had found this movie on a Flea Market vendor a couple of months ago and gave it a chance because of Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. I enjoyed it so much that it has become my Father's Day movie.
I'm glad you reviewed this underrated gem Dave.
Oh, so THAT'S what this film was called! I've been trying to find this everywhere over the last 10 years since I first rented it in 2001. Thanks so much for mentioning it.
I watched this on TV many years ago and immediately liked it. I tracked the DVD down some time later and have watched it a few times since. Funnily enough I only re-watched it a couple of weeks ago or so. It's an excellent film, highly recommended.
Hadn't seen this in over 20 years. Now I had to re-watch it. Such a great movie. Hits different today now that my dad is gone. What I wouldn't do to get a chance to talk to my dad back in time.
Great review! What a choice, time to get the DVD from the shelf!❤
Glad to see you review this movie and giving it exposure, it's great
Goodnight Sweetheart's version of this butterfly effect explains all those why questions.
The Star Trek Franchise has used the proximity plot device a couple of times. "Back to the Future" also has the main character remember both timelines. The show polish on the ball incident was a rare event of an umpire reversing himself. Had someone predicted that event in advance it could definitely make believers.
Never even knew Jim Caveizal existed until Passion came out. Now I keep hearing about him in movies from 20-30 years ago.
Such wholesome content. It's like past Dave reached into the future after meeting everyone from the ole sektur and saw where it would go and so he changed his timeline to make good wholesome content while still commenting on ideological stuff every now n then. Or maybe dealing with Based Mama and meeting Warski n the like just scared him straight.
The ending always makes me cry. Makes me wish I could've saved family members like the movie does.
love this film. thanks for the positive review
A fantastic film! Thank you for reminding me
I just watched this a few days ago! Always a fun watch
Great film. Baffled as to why this has been forgotten about by many.
This was the first DVD I ever owned. No one talks about it now, but it is solid. Glad you reviewed it!
As an amateur radio operator I had a grandfather who offered to teach me the ropes when I was 15 but turned him down. Licensed after he passed every time I get on the radio (and with the movie in mind) I wonder will I hear from him, eh? Interesting…this movie caused a lot of excitement in the ham community.
Damn i completely forgot about this wonderful movie. I remember loving it when i saw it long ago. Thanks for bringing this one on! Im going to try to find it on bluray to add to the library
One of my favorites, for the reasons you described. Definitely recommended.
I saw this as I worked as security at the Odeon at the time. A well thought out what if.
This movie is so amazing, I wanted to cry so hard when I finished it. With the severe lack of powerful father and son stories today, this movie really should be brought back up into people’s minds.
Saw it once in theaters but really enjoyed it. Didn't realize that Caviziel was in it until I saw your review!
YES! One of the underappreciated gems in SciFi. Please do "Time Lapse" now.
Seems as though Looper (2012) may have borrowed from this, or at least nodded at it in passing. Damage to a living body, and 'writing' on it, in one time and place which manifests on it in another, for example.
Great review.
I had thought quite a lot on the time travel rules also… but I missed the point about the burning letters appearing and little chief not having simultaneous memories of both timelines.
If you enjoyed Frequency you should also enjoy ‘The Caller’
Many similarities. And the caller is also very well acted.
A solid film, and one very rarely talked about. Glad to see this review here. Yes, the timetravel is far fetched and inconsistent in places, but it’s a film. Sit back, grab a snack, and enjoy.
I liked Frequency. As you said, it was very well acted, and it was well edited so the viewer could follow what was happening despite its mind-bending premise. The editing was crucial.
If there's one weakness, it's the jarring tonal juxtaposition between a dark, disturbing crime drama on one hand and a warm family movie on the other. It didn't quite solve that.
But I always love a good father-son story, and this is one.
Also, the way it handles changing timelines, where reality changes perceptibly in real-time, is much like Back to the Future.
Saw this in the theater. Great flick. Great review Dave.
My dad had always wanted to get a license and when I watched this film we went in together to get our licenses. We love this film as it is the spark that got me to bond more with my dad.
Licenses for What ?
@@DaraGaming42 HAM radio
For a radio???@@81Iron
Very well done review.
No, it’s not a science fiction.
It’s a fable, or a legend, or myth about fathers and sons.
Aw, Dad…I miss you.
Thanks Dave
The radio is not connecting the timelines. The Aurora is. And the two timelines are playing out simultaneously. This is why he sees the letters appearing one by one. His father is still making choices in the present to carve each letter. He could stop at any time, and thus, the letters would stop as well.
One of the few films my dad and I enjoyed together. And ironically he and I are 30 years apart in age, his father was a firefighter and my dad a cop. So whenever I watch this film I think of my dad…….
It’s great that you are covering older movies :-) this movie was great!!
I saw this in theaters, mainly for the plot and Carrie-Anne Moss was in it a year after she got famous in The Matrix.
Frequency really is a fun movie, and the idea that both the present and the past were moving forward at the same rate was a great storytelling mechanism.
The writing on the desk makes sense. For time travel to be possible, every moment in Time must exist simultaneously. So, the letters that did not exist would begin to exist in future as they're being created in the past.... which is only one reason time travel stories require the brain being set to "Off".
