Technically, if you know how to, you can tastefully use 11 out of 12 notes when playing. The only one that doesn't fit is the flat 2nd, and if you're in C-major it's the key of Db. As long as it is in the bases key ,with is predominantly B flat. Chromatic runs are real fun cuz you can really let go, just as long as you stay in the key just take it for a ride!!! In theory blues and this type of stuff is easy to play, technically,now techniques are something else. Get comfortable,then start playing with simple scales,it's all about doing it. I was never a big one for improvisation,myself, but I loved playing the blues!!Just don't have the real soloist mentality.
