The Best Camera Bag For Filmmakers (SURPRISING) Why I'm Returning The $400 Nomatic Bag

  • In this video, I'm going to review the Nomatic Camera bag which is one of the most popular camera bags on the market. I'll go over its features and my personal experience using it, and explain why it may not be the best choice for filmmakers. Then, I'll introduce you to my surprise pick for the best camera bag, which may shock you. If you're a filmmaker or photographer, you won't want to miss this review! I compare the Lowepro Protactic 450 awi vs. the Peter Mckinnon Nomatic Backpack and show why I decided to return the Nomatic bag. I compare the price, depth, comfort, zipper quality, accessibility, rainfly, storage space and the accessories of both bags and show why I've chosen the Lowepro bag over the Nomatic.

    I love Peter’s work and have followed him for years, but i can’t stand fanboys overhyping what is clearly a marketing stunt. I appreciate sincere reviews like this one. I’m sure the PM bag is good, but is nowhere near to perfect, specially with that price tag.

    I bought the Protactic 450 in part based on this video 3-years ago and I'm STILL using it. I use it daily and have brought it to 7 countries and it's carrying my 16" MBP, iPad Pro 12.9, DJI RSC2 Gimbal, Elgato Streamdeck, GoPro/Accessories and all kind of adapters and my DJI Air2S. I have it loaded out for photography or just hardcore work and I have been traveling 6-years in Se Asia. My point being, GREAT recommendation. I don't hear anyone talking about the Lowepro anymore but they should, it's still GREAT!

    Worth mentioning that the Nomatic design places the entire load of the bag on the rear zipper compartment. The shoulder straps are attached directly to the back panel. Imagine if the zippers blew while on your back. All your gear would dump out. Lowe pro’s design is more safe.

    Over the last few days, I have looked at numerous CZcams videos that review camera bags. After all this, I had narrowed my potential choices to the LowePro 450 AW II and the Nomatic Peter McKinnon bag. Once I watched your video, my mind was made up. The Lowepro is a better choice for me. The price difference didn't scare me off, but when you illustrated the difference in the depth of the bags, that was the clincher. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video. It certainly helped me! Best wishes! Lou from Georgia.

    Just stumbled across this video as I was researching something else and I have both these bags - just wanted to chime in and say I absolutely agree with you. The Peter McKinnon nomatic bag was incredibly disappointing. And the point about the smaller ProTactic bag being able to carry more gear than the nomatic bag with the first immediate surprising problem I noticed when comparing them. Super misleading.
    Side note, I was finally able to stop using my Protactic a few months ago when my Shimoda Explore v2 was delivered. It's a friggin' incredible bag.

    The Lowepro 450 ist a huge camera bag with tons of space. Its made for carrying your camera gear, thats it. Not much comfort, but fully functional. I own the 450 (such as the 250 btw). The Nomatic is more than a simple camera bag. Its for travelling with your camera gear. Therefore its got some additional space, thats the very point. No chance to use a 450 for travelling without any additional bag or case. In my view, it doesnt make much sense to compare both bags, as they are made for different needs. However i agree when its comes to the price. Nice review though! Greetings :-)

    I was gonna ask if u could take the side flaps bc I'd think they're kinda annoying but it blew my mind when I saw what I could do with them. My only concern is that a didn't see a laptop pocket in the backpack. Another feature I saw in another backpack is that when u open it up it has another layer of protection so things won't fall out. Lastly are the backpacks weather proof? I find annoying to pull up a bag to cover the backpack when it should be weather proof already.

    There is a rain cover in na extra bag for the Nomatic. Not build in like the lowepro, but I got this tiny extra bag with my Nomatic Peter McKinnon. But I think you don't need it because the Nomatic is made of water resisting material.

    The lowepro is an amazing bag. I have it and it can hold almost all of my gear, including a 150-600. The only downside is that it doesn't comply with the latest carry-on regulations regarding size.. This is why I'm looking for a deep bag that can hold almost all my gear but still fit on a plane :)

    the nomatic backpack is basically a donation to peter mckinnon. my dad and I bought too many camera bags and they're all kinda riffing off each other so there's always an affordable version of whatever bag you're looking at. the mckinnon bag is obviously a designer bag cuz it has his name on it so yeah finding a 200$ bag similar or better isn't surprising.

    YES THE DEPTH OF THE BAG - I received mine a couple of days ago and immediately I realised that I couldn't put my A7IV with a battery grip on it standing up as well as not being able to fit my 24 - 70 standing end to end. I have the V1 of the Lowepro and this is something I guess I took for granted but is something of a deal breaker for me. I find it a bit strange that PM wouldn't have it deeper seeing as he's been using Canon cameras with grips on them for years which wouldn't fit? I also find the bags straps pretty uncomfortable so am sending it back. It's a shame because looking at the feature list and testing it out I'd say it's about 80 - 85% there to being right on the money

  • @andrewfehrsen
    @andrewfehrsen Před 3 lety +9

    Nice video! My two cents: two completely different bags - unfair to compare them really. There is a reason the PM bag is higher in price. Materials and versatility. It's a weekend bag for the travelling photographer, but if you're JUST wanting a camera bag then the PM is NOT what you should have ordered.

    • @sorayananji6801
      @sorayananji6801 Před 3 lety

      The PM bag is technically, but i'm not sure if it's practically, more versatile. Wouldn't travellers have a separate bag/case for clothing? Particularly with carry-on weight and size restrictions which are tighter if you travel through Europe. If you want a premium bag with bondable, thermoformed fabric, and YKK zippers for travel Shimoda's Explore V2, Wndrd's Prvke V2, and F-Stop's range are probably lighter and more versatile genreal travel companions.

    I have a LowePro Slingshot that I’ve taken all over the world. The company’s outdoor/backpacking roots seem to filter down into high quality gear that I know will last, at a reasonable price. I have to disagree with some points here. The nomatic bag is clearly not designed to be a camera bag only. And many cameras nowadays have decently small lenses. I never had a problem with that obviously with my MFT setup. The waist strap comes off on the nomatic bag as well, and not to mention the other accessory you can buy for the nomatic bag which is the smaller bag for drones. Which I use constantly. So... I mean... Not that fair in my opinion. Just different experiences for different users.

    How many bodies and lenses can you fit in the LowePro. I have 2 bodies and 4 lenses?

    I'll say, this convinced me to go with teh Lowepro rather than Peter Mckinnon's. I was hoping Peter's would go on sale this Christmas season, but nope... it's just too high in price and with your video, it's helped make my choice.

    so the lowepro doesn't have any storage space if you're traveling and need space for clothing?
    good video man! love it

    This is a good review but anyone watching this should keep in mind that the bags are made with two different purposes in mind. If all you want is a gear/camera bag then yes you are correct nomatic is not the bag for you but if you want to take gear with you while you travel maybe on a weekend trip or maybe a little longer then the nomatic has you covered two different purposes in my opinion just depends on what you are looking for personally

    I am not here to hate But unless you didn't know the depth issue with the nomatic bag when purchasing most typical bags arent made to house a pro body like a 1DX like shown in the video. When buying you should have looked if it was able to house a pro body like that. But it was just a thought of mine. I love your content tho!

    Dude if you learn how to pack you'd fit the lenses & monitor in the Nomatic bag...and I have the Protactic bag and love it...but you just were stick things anyway without thinking!

      Yeah, I agree! I mean yes the LowPro bag is deeper, but the PM backpack can store all his gear, he just didn't think smartly about how to do it. There's plenty of space to place his monitor, and his camera body and lenes could easily be laid in a different position.

      Or just buy a separate bag for your clothes so you don't have to lug them around with you when you're on a shoot.

    The link shows the bag as 222$ where can I get for 190$?

  • @mzzah06

    the material of the nomatic bag is water resistant. so no need for a rain cover. but decent bag for 195.
