  • Sorry about the Length of the video, but those that are serious about doing this job in their driveway will appreciate the detail. Feel free to fast forward or play at faster speeds if it suits your fancy.
    This should apply to 2016 and up Honda Pilots with the 6spd transmission and should apply to 2017 and up Honda Ridgelines with 6spd transmission.

    Part numbers as follows. 4ea quarts of DW-1 transmission fluid. (uses 3.3 quarts approx.) 08200-9008. 1ea, drain plug washer 90471-PX4-000. 1ea, transmission filter 25430-PLR-003. Drain plug torque 35 foot lbs. Fluid level check is HOT and engine off parked on level ground. Only read the side of the stick that says HOT legibly.

      How do you keep from getting burned when checking trans fluid hot? They put that dip stick way down in there. ...a welder's leather jacket comes to mind.

    First off thanks so much for taking the time to do this video. No mention of a transmission filter in the service manual! Thanks for finding it.
    Second , when you drain the tranny, you are NOT draining ALL of the fluid. There is still more fluid in the torque converter and the valve body. The 3 times drain and fill works this way (and I'm sure you already know this.. but others may not know about it..)
    -- First time you are mixing new tran fluid with old. You go drive it around and then drain it again.
    -- 2nd time, drain and fill and drive around, it's now almost all new fluid, but still has some of the old fluid mixed in.
    -- 3rd time drain and fill, it's mostly all new fluid. Yes... this is goofy but the only way to do it if you have 60-70k miles on the fluid and it's dirty.
    I have no idea how much you are supposed to drive the car around, but a couple of miles will circulate all of the transmission fluid inside the transmission thus mixing the fluid. So I used to drain, fill, drive around for 5 minutes and then repeat.
    Now... lol. With that said. I have a 2019 Ridgeline and I plan on draining tranny fluid every second oil change (10k or so..) so that I always have some new tranny fluid in the mix. I'm hoping this will save me from having to do the 3 time procedure at the 60k mark.

      Thank you and you're welcome. I also plan on just doing it every other oil change. I will probably never change the filter again though now that the initial wear is pretty much done. The magnet on the drain plug is very effective too. There is quite a debate on the forums about the 3 times drain and fill. From what I gather as far as Honda is concerned the Ridgeline/Pilot does not fall into the 3x like some of their other models do. I pretty much tell people to do what ever makes them happy. :)

    Great video - helped me tremendously. He mentions this briefly in the video, but it is really important to have before you start -- You will either need a deep well 10mm socket or a short (~1 inch) extension to remove that bolt holding the filter bracket. A standard-depth 10mm socket won't give you clearance around the filter and a 3-inch extension is too long.

    Nice to see someone changing their transmission fluid every 30k. My friends think I’m crazy. But it’s a $45 investment every 2 years!
    My new Acura takes the ATF 3.1 which is like $35 a quart, it sucks. But hey it’s a $45,000 car. I’ll spend the money to keep it running great. Honda has always been reliable for me. 200k+ miles on the engine and transmission without major issues. I’ll take it

    Ive already got bad experiences from independent shops and car dealers when their lube techs stripped drain bolts on my vehicles. Fron then on Im doing my own lube maintenance on motors, transaxles, transfer cases, gear boxes, power steering and rear ends on my personal vehicles including motor boats and generators. I found it easy to do. Thanks for posting your video. Its been a learing tool for us DIYERS.

    MrBlack, I just now finished doing the transmission service on my 19K mile 2017 RTL-T. For me the toughest part was the bolt to the filter hold-down bracket, once done with that the rest of the job went smoothly.
    Having said that, I wanted to confirm the proper way to check the fluid level so I searched my owners’ manual and there was no information.
    So I called Honda America. Their answer confirmed that there was no information published in the owners’ manual, rep said Honda left it out because the vehicle information system would alert you when service was required.
    I took a couple of breaths and I told the rep that all I wanted to do was check the level and how to do it (engine on/off- hot/cold...) Rep responded by saying take the vehicle to the dealer........ What???.
    SO, THANKS AGAIN for your last post with the info on parts, levels and READING THE DIPSTICK. That was more information than Honda was able to provide. 👏

      @@kloco1554 You are welcome Chino. Yeah that is a lot of money for a pretty simple job. They tried to charge me just over 300 dollars to do the rear diff oil, air filter, and cabin air filter. I was like, ummm NO.

    I have a 2019 RTL-E and did not know there was a external transmission filter. So, that is good to know. At 15.5K miles I changed the transmission fluid. I put the truck up on the ramps the night before, and came out in the morning and drained the transmission fluid. I drained it into a pan that was marked in quarts, and found that I was able to drain 4 quarts. Actually after 4 quarts I put the drain plug with new washer back in, since I only had 4 quarts on hand to add. I don't think it would have drained to much more than 4 quarts, but I didn't want to take a chance. I plan on doing this again at about 30K miles.

      If you drain and fill like you are doing with genuine Honda atf every 15000 miles you'll never have transmission issues guaranteed . And it will always shift smoothly because the trans solenoids and gears will be as new . People have Honda trans issues because they neglect maintenance

    I'm a gear head and love how we mechanics are inclined to help each other with our vehicles. I've seen hundreds of this type of video and this maybe the "Citizen Kane" of the genre. The presenter is articulate and explains things in a no doubt how to do it detail. The videography is fabulous too and he makes a great effort to get a clear shot of the job at hand. In addition to owning a 2017 Ridgeline I also have a 2000 C5 which I saw parked in the garage next to a Mustang GT. I don't own the Mustang- but had one before the Corvette, although it was a late fox body one. Thank You PNW for the thoughtful & thorough how to on ATF service on our rigs!

      Thank you George. Great comment. My wife says I would make a great teacher but I'm skeptical lol. The Mustang is gone now. She traded it in for a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT with a whopping 25k miles on it. The 392 I have to admit is just one of the most well rounded engines I've ever had the pleasure to drive. Oh and the Honda is gone now because it was on a lease for our small business and the wife changes cars like she changes shoes. We now have 2020 Jeep Gladiator. It's a cool rig but for a daily driver the Honda was much much nicer and easier to use all around.

    This is a great video. So many DIY videos have a camera that's bouncing and shifting all over the place. This was a great job on your part. And great attention to detail. I have a 2016 Pilot which seems doomed to changing the transmission fluid almost as often as the oil if you want to avoid the RPM fluctuation not to mention erratic shifting. The three change procedure although necessary, seems wasteful. It's sad that Honda has not addressed this flaw in their transmissions. Keep your videos coming.

They may seem simple to some but there are a lot of people out there that need a push over the edge to try the job themselves. :) I'd reckon a trans service at the Honda dealer is probably in the 300 dollar range.

      There is a TSB and the dealer has changed my fluid twice now and did it for FREE. SHOCKED! I asked the same question as to what is Honda doing to fix this? I am going to AMSOIL for the transmission fluid next time around, my belief is the Pilot transmission doesn't like it when the fluid breaks down.

      You are right!, I have a 2016 Pilot as well...weird rpm fluctuation & erratic shifting that lunges the car forward as you accelerate. I thought it's a torque converter problem.
      Solved this problem 3 days ago by replacing the clutch pressure switch & fresh Honda ATF DW-1.

      I have a 2016 pilot exl. Used amsoil. Shifting shutter completly went away. I drain and fill transmission fluid every 3 oil change. Now. Oem honda transmission fluid brakes down. Fast. I do regular city driving. Honda transmission fluid comes out burnt amsoil oe is way too go. Amsoil ss. Is too thick

    It's called Kitsune no Yomeiri (the fox's wedding) in Japan and is known as a sunshower in English. They are most common around sunrise and sunset when the sun is closer to the horizon than the typical altitude of nimbus clouds, though they can actually happen any time of day other than solar noon in the middle of summer. We get a few a year here in PA, too.

    Nice. I used a fluid extractor via the dipstick tube the actually siphoned the new stuff via the same tube. Sucked out about 3.6 qts of fluid & replaced with same amount. Warmed up the transmission and double checked the dipstick.

      I don't tow much but use engine brake regularly. So I change it once a year. This extractor makes it a breeze.

    Very helpful. Thank you for posting. My 2017 Ridgeline was pulsing at about 45 mph. You could see and feel the RPM jumping. Changed the filter and fluid and the pulsing is now gone.

      thanks for the helpful feedback! I have 2017 Pilot that pulsing - RPM jumping between 1,000 & 2000 rpm under 45mph. I read somewhere that it's a TSB 17-014. Did your problem fixed without the software update? Dealer want $350 for software update, out of 8 years/80,000 miles warranty.

    Thanks much. This video was one of the best and clearest I've seen. Explaining the different types of clips, screws, bolts and snap fasteners plus all the other details of the filter change makes me a lot more comfortable with doing this myself. Honda definitely doesn't design ease of maintenance into the mix which is something I would always do in my craft. Kinda peves me a bit. Got to get me one of those rollers you were laying on too! That dipstick being as it is is simply ridiculous. Thanks again and I say BROVO for a video well done.

    Honda in florida wanted $500 to replace the trans oil and told me that they had to change the oil 3 times thats why was that price…congrats on your video 👍🏼

      Thank you Lee. I know it comes up on the forum quite often about the whole 3 times drain and fill. From what I understand the Ridgeline is not considered from the factory to be a 3x which is odd because most other honda model transmissions are. It's possible this has changes on the newer year models of ridgeline. I don't know though.

    I did the transmission filter and fluid today on a 2016 Pilot EX AWD with Honda transmission cooler. I drained and refilled 4.2 quarts. It kept draining and draining. Probably it was coming out of the cooler. Measuring the old fluid helped me to know about how much new fluid was needed. Thanks for the video. The picture quality and camera locations were great.

    This Sir, is a great video! You don’t see videos like this from the average joe. I have a 17 Ridgeline Black edition, upgrade the factory tires to a Yokohama. A little larger and wider, it changed the feel and drive of the truck to Wayyyy better handling. Plus taking it off road is smoother. The factory firestones were Terrible!

    I have a 24 Ridgeline. No more dipstick. Not sure if there is a filter yet because who can see anything behind all the plastic? Great job on this vid.

    Honda DW1 fluid I believe is really made by Idemitsu Type H-Plus. It replaces z1 fluid and flows better in cold weather then z1

    Changing ATF filter is advisable once you replace new fluid on transmission so the fluid goes clean, not replacing filter the dirt is still inside transmission upon circulate of fluid

    Thanks for the video. Really thought there was a fill bolt ( directly below the dipstick). I could be wrong there, but thought I’d mention in case someone else knows for sure.

      Someone else mentioned there should be a fill bolt. I did not go back and look for it though. If you have a long trans funnel though I think in most cases it's easier to pour the fluid than pump it.

      There is a fill bolt (3/8"), but it is much easier to just add the transmission fluid through the dipstick tube.

    How you check the level on a Honda is after add the fluid 3.3 qts. Warm. The car up , cycle thru the gears on the shifter then with the car warm then turn off and then check the level

    Great video and info. Gotta get this done to my 2012 Pilot. I just did my rear diff fluit at 132,000k,..it looked new, but smelled burnt. Transfer case is next. I tow a 3,500 pound camper with it.

    My transmission in my 2017 Ridgeline started shuttering/lunging occasionally at 48,908 miles. By 52,500 miles the service department told me I needed a new Transmission. The message on the dash said "Transmission Problem". Cost to replace is $10,000.00. Very disappointed with the durability of this vehicle.

    I have a 2017 bought new in July 2016. During a service visit to have the oil change I told them that the transmission was pulsing. They said there is a “Service Bulletin” on this they refer to it as “judders”. They did a 3 oil change/flush no filter change. They also made a change in the software to help lower the temperature. All at no charge b/c it’s covered under the service bulletin. I had to pay for the normal engine oil change. Seems crazy to me that Honda didn’t want to change the filter.

      I have a 2019 Pilot it started having this judder problem too. No service bulletin on them I had to pay for the 3 flush. I had a 2002 Odyssey that Honda replaced the transmission free under warranty, torque converter problems. It was a none problem 2001 back. Honda has a long history of transmission problems in their larger vehicles. I’m done with Honda!!

      Yup the transmission filter is considered to be good for the life of the vehicle per honda or they'll change it if there is a transmission failure.

      Yup, I've heard this before too. We had good luck with ours. We ended up trading it in when the lease ran out for another brand. The only way I could ever see returning to Honda is if they make a better transmission and increase the Ridgeline towing capacity at least 1 or maybe even 2k pounds. The chassis can handle it easily.

    Thanks for the video! 2018 RTL-E AWD w/ 44k, just started hesitating then revving high to push into 4th gear I guess (35 mph at granny acceleration) with an extra 800rpm. Heavy acceleration it happens at 65mph and revs an extra 2k from 3.5k to 5.5k in a split second, can be startling. Downshifts hard when slowing down at 30mph. Hopefully its just an ATF change. Taking it to Honda 10/29 for them to check it out, will keep you posted. If that fixes it and they charge an arm and a leg, I will start doing it myself. If it doesn't fix it 100%then I'm trading it for a Tundra LOL.

      Both transaxle filters are there to be changed at overhaul. It serves no purpose to change them before then.

    Great vid I was checking it out because I have to do this on my 2019 Ridgeline, I might skip the Filter this time but will do next time. I got about 41k miles and the A13 maint minder came up. I do know if you tow something change it more often maybe every 30K then.

      Thank you James. I didn't do the whole job with it jacked up like that. I was just draining out any remaining oil in the transmission with the jack. I was only working underneath where the ramps were the whole time. By all means be as safe as you can be. I watched somebody get crushed by a car when I was a kid. I've also been working on cars my whole life so my comfort level will be different than the average weekend warrior.

    Good job. Just scoped my 2019 RTL-T AWD and everything is exactly the same as yours. The dipstick tube doesn't seem as far down as yours but I think that is just the camera lens.

      Thank you. That should be the one. Seems well made for the dollar. I know several have said they skip the funnel and use the removable fill plug bolt. I was fine using the funnel and one less seal to break on the transmission IMO.

    Thanks for showing this essential process. When I bought my used Ridge at 42kmi, it hesitated up hills - probably never changed. I reset the tranny logic and that helped, but nothing as good as after the fluid change. I dont think the dealer changed the filter like you did😫

      @@PNW_Car_Mods I feel satisfied with having found and fixed the issue. No help from the dealership though - where the problem is. The tyranny needs timely maintenance, that's all. If you know where I could look for a traditional maintenance schedule, I'd be in your debt. The owners manual is seriously lacking in that regard. Thx

      We had JDM Astar LEDs in both the low beams and the driving lights. Loved them and they matched the DRLs light color exactly.

    Nice vid. Most automatic cars it is suggested to do 3x drain and fill just so all of the old fluid is changed - drain, fill, drive and repeat. Most of the ATF is in the torque converter and lines and the 3x drain and fill is much safer than a flush, although tedious on cars without a dipstick. I believe the Ridgeline has a bit over 8 quarts of ATF

    FYI same layout on 2018 Honda Pilot even down to the filter and bracket,removing the splash guard was the same too.
    I did notice some dirty oil deposits clumping under the tranny housing I,m guessing its a CV axle seal of CV boot feels like it shouldn't be happening at 42 thousand miles

      This has been discussed to death on the Ridgeline owners forum and and it always circled back to the Gen 2 NOT being a 3x process. If it were the parts guy would have sold me 12 quarts of oil instead of 4.

    Hey Mr. Black,
    I was shocked when I read page 523 of the Owner’s Manual for the 2017 Ridgeline.
    It specifically says; “Have a dealer check the fluid level and replace if necessary.
    Do not attempt to check or change the automatic transmission fluid yourself.”
    I also checked for the manufacturer's recommended service schedule for the ATF fluid, and it’s clear as mud.
    I’m guess it’s a matter of time before Honda is on the other side of a class action law suit alleging “right to repair” infringement. Who do they think they are, John Deere? lol
    I know this is hindsight, but it would have been nice to check the fluid level before you drained the old fluid at normal operating temp to get a reference.
    I looked up the torque spec for the drain plug, it’s 35 Ft-lbs with new crush washer. But, I have a feeling both your wrists, and at least one of your elbows is calibrated to within 5 Ft-lbs.
    35:18 If I have a question, can you tell me where to put it? Lol

      lol Thank Chuck. Got the fluid dialed in pretty quickly. Added a couple tenths of a quart more. The cool thing is you can only read one side of the dip stick and the stick is keyed. I tell you what, when you work on as much junk as I have in the last 35 years you definitely develop a good calibrated wrist. There's of course still a time and place for a good torque wrench though, don't get me wrong. :) Thanks for the support as always.

      My nephew stripped the axle nut on his Suzuki GSX-R 750 when changing the rear tire.
      He over tightened it while using a torque wrench.
      Now the axle nut just spins with no resistance, and he can't even loosen it to take it off, and can't exactly ride the bike safely to the shop to get it removed.
      While I was surveying the carnage, I asked him;
      "Didn't you feel the nut get tight, and seat into position before you went to far?"
      He looked at me like I was a retard and said;
      "What are you talking about, I just set the torque wrench to the correct spec, and push down as hard as I can until it clicks!".

      Thank you Mark. Per the factory that filter is intended to last the life of the vehicle or if the transmission were to fail it would get changed. In other words it's not mandatory to change it.
      I personally feel like it is a good idea to change it once at the first trans service which I hear per the maintenance minder is at 45K and then the second filter can go until the trans or the truck goes to truck heaven.

      Everything I have seen says the 6 speed transmissions are not. I know this was heavily debated on ROC forum saying it is not. According to our local honda parts department it was not so that is what I went with.

      Bought new sight unseen in Sept 2016 and delivered Oct 3 of 2016. They say the factory maintenance minder is set for 45k miles IIRC.
      I would wait a while to let that initial break in do it's thing. We did ours early only because we had been towing with the Ridgeline last summer. It's so easy to service though I could see changing the trans fluid every other oil change I bet the trans would last longer than the truck.

    I performed this service yesterday morning. I have 30100 miles and about 2K towing a trailer. I thought i would have more trouble getting the 10mm bolt on the filter bracket since it was awkward getting my hand i there. I actually had the truck on a jack stand on the drivers side and the passenger wheel on the ground. This way it's tipped toward the open end of the drain plug. After draining completely to a slow drip wound up draining 4.3 quarts or so. Not sure where the extra fluid came from? 6 months ago i did bring it in to the dealer because the transmission would seem to get stuck in a lower gear, mainly on the highway in Cruise control. Touching the gas pedal would fix it. Apparently there is some TSB on this extending the warranty for an additional 3 years or 75 k miles or something. They never told me they added any fluid? The transmission has not been doing this in the past few months either. I did put 4 quarts back in.

      Thank you Karla. I am not sure on the drain plug washers and which ones are interchangeable. I would have to look that up myself. All parts came from the same dealership where the Ridgeline was purchased.

      @@PNW_Car_Mods I believe I found the washer part # for the drain plug it is 90471-PX4-000. I acquired a package when changing the trans axle fluid earlier and had forgotten.
      I have been experiencing what appears to be early shifting or hesitation on the acceleration after shifting and I am at 30500 miles. After reading about it on the web there is a TSB 17-025 out there about it and it refers to torque converter issues that are corrected by a drain and refill 3X so I am doing that portion of the TSB at this point to correct the issue. I will also change out the filter too. Your clip will be helpful thanks.

I just dug up my receipts. :) I don't have any plans to do the 3X drain and fill on ours but I will say that I will probably just drain the trans after every summer and refill. It's cheap and easy. What year is your Honda? Ours is one of the early 17s I think built in Aug or Sept of 16. delivered in Oct of 16. It's been 100% for us. No returns for repairs to the dealer. I hadn't thought about it much but I'm assuming ours is out of warranty now.

      @@PNW_Car_Mods We purchased our Ridgeline May of 2017 it was new off the lot I am not sure what month it was built in, the door sticker shows a 4/'17 but that seems too close for a build date. We have not towed or used the truck as a work truck just a daily driver with small trips included. Its been a very comfortable vehicle and we have been happy up to this point with it. We did get the recall completed for the wiring harness corrosion issue but that has been the only maintenance beyond normal needed. We did contact the dealer and the transmission/torque converter problem is covered under warranty if it is more than a drain and refill (power-train/warranty 60000 miles), but the fluids would not be so we decided to do it ourselves.

      Michael this is a split case style transmission. There is no pan. Just a drain plug. The on off funnel is super common at wally world or the like. You can even pick them up off of amazon. Thanks for checking it out.

      Fred the filter is considered to be a lifetime filter or replace if the transmission gets damaged. I like the idea of changing it at least once and then maybe not again until the transmission needs rebuilt. I am honestly unsure of the interval. We changed it when we did because we were towing at max gross weight with it for a summer.

      I finally replaced my 2017 Sport’s filter and fluid. I measured about 3 oz of whatever fluid that dripped from the filter. For the most part the hardest thing was to remove the filter and putting back the cover.😇 Thanks to your video I already knew what to do. I torqued the drain plug to 36 lbs/ft. I followed the specs from my wife’s 2006 Odyssey. I did not see your recent post. I hope I did not over torqued it but I am thinking the crush washer offsets that a little bit. I would like to note though that before I replaced the fluid the engine seems to hesitate when accelerating. Now it’s back to it’s smooth acceleration. Thanks again and more power. Sorry for the long one.

Instead, I think it would be safer to raise only one of the rear sides at a time and support it with a jack stand, then do the same for the other side.. this way there’s always one tire on the ground and/or a jack stand supporting one of the rear sides.. just saying. And my other comment would be not to install the plastic under-guard until you’re done checking for leaks. Other than that, I think you did a great job!

      Hey Mike. Thanks for the feedback. You bring up great points. I will counter as I have in a half dozen other comments. The truck was not raised to work under it. It was raised to drain the rest of the trans fluid out. I also was never under the truck to a point where I could be crushed. There is a certain amount of common sense that has to be used when working on cars. Been doing it all my adult life. As far as leak checking and leaving the belly pan off I would agree if you are uncertain. I have done enough jobs of this nature to know if I should be concerned or not and a leak check was performed on start up. I have a hard time with my videos in showing how to do it step by step and showing how to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. Again thanks for the comment and no offense taken.

I was in no way criticizing your work, just commented based on what I saw on your video and like you said: common sense. Safety should be our number one concern, especially if we ever have to work under any car. Thanks for the reply.

    Good Vid . I wish I could see the relation of the Filter's proximity to the " Dip Stick " . Was that longer tube that was at the top of the filter connected to the bottom of the dipstick ? Or is the filter & " Dip Stick " two separate parts ?

    I use a translator. Honda Pilot 2017 For a 9 speed transmission, is it worth installing additional cooling? Or is it unnecessary? I want to tow a motorhome, don't know which one yet

      You need to check and see if you have a cooler already factory installed. If you do then you don't need to worry about adding a cooler.

    Whats keeping that thing from rolling off the ramps with the rear wheels off the ground?? I use 4 ramps to keep the park and e-brake in use. Be safe out there. Otherwise a great vid!!

      You are right Brent. I should have secured that more. I think in my mind it was like I am just not going to get under there and I'll put it back down once it was done draining. Which of course I did later but after I had put the drain plug and underbelly back on. Thank you for that criticism.

      We did not Ed. We were lucky to have never had any sort of weird transmission quirks.

    Is changing the filter necessary if you don't tow th vehicle?

      I believe the generally accepted consensus is that the filter is meant to last the life of the transmission. So no you do not have to change it. I do however think it's a good idea to change it on the first trans service if you can towing or not.

      Appreciate the request Jeff. We do not. This particular truck IMO had no where near enough age or miles to require a coolant change yet. I would think someone will come up with that before too long as these gen 2s get a little older.
