- This is the 8BitDo Ultimate controller - my review & detailed comparisons, featuring the8BitDo Pro 2, the Power A Wireless Enhanced Controller, Xbox One Controller, and Nintendo Switch Pro controller. In this video, I go hands-on so we can take a detailed look at what's different from the previous model, and why this is a great customizable controller for Nintendo Switch, Windows, & Steam Deck! This new controller features custom profile switching, enhanced grip, and it comes with a wireless charging dock! The controller can be used via bluetooth or 2.4Ghz connection with the included dongle. With the Ultimate app and software, you can utilize custom button mapping, and change the stick sensitivity, as well as trigger sensitivity and rumble intensity. And of course, the awesome d-pad is back yet again! This controller is very similar to the Xbox Controller and uses the same layout with the sticks, with very similar buttons. The control sticks use hall effect sensors so they're not supposed to have any joycon drift!

The 8bitdo ultimate bluetooth is amzing for the switch.
But in pc I'm willing to sacrifice the charging station and the hal effect sticks for how the nacon revolution unlimited feels.
Pro 2
I think if 8BitDo does a new iteration with the same shell as the Xbox/KingKong controllers but has their signature Dpad, the back buttons, and an easily swappable battery pack, that would be the absolute perfect controller. I’d pay $80-90 if that were to happen and I’d be using that for PC primarily.
The only things stopping me from getting the KingKong is their quality control issues & their Dpad because I hear it’s nearly identical to Xbox’s which I do not like.

I love my 8bitdo pro 2, but wow I freaken love that this has a dock packed in! I wish that was the controller standard. Great review I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this controller
Thank you - the dock is really nice I love how it feels. And sounds!! I shortened that bit for the edit but man I was really into it haha. HOWEVER I still just mainly use my USB C cord to charge it. A USB C cord works with everything Vs the dock can only work with the ultimate controller so it’s kind of cumbersome to have. At least for someone like me who doesn’t really stick to one controller.
I really wish the pro 2 had a dock bc is the only controller I use that doesn’t already use double a’s

I think 8bitdo's greatest strength are their dpads. The pro 2 highlights the dpad better because of its location on the controller. But the pro 2 is a little dated, lacking a dock and hall effect sticks, even if the dpad is the star of the controller.
The ultimate is probably the best valued controller out there. What you get for the price is insane. The layout is just more versatile for modern games.
The pro 2 is king for 2d platforming and other retro games, while the ultimate is better at everything else and about as good on the genres the pro 2 is better at.
And the dock is pretty cool but honestly I don’t use it 😬 It’s easier for me to just use the same C cable I use for everything else and not have an extra gadget always plugged in.

I picked up and unboxed my 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller a few days ago. I was a little worried because the only places you can get the Ultimate Software is either iOS, Android, or Windows. I have a Pixel 7XL, but I do not use Windows on my PC, nor do I use Mac, I run Arch Linux on my gaming PC.
The reason for the worries should be apparent, but going forward let's just say I was under the impression that the Android version would either need a C to A adapter to plug the dongle into the phone, or spin up a virtual machine of Windows. The adapter that came with the phone is MIA, and I don't want Microsoft anywhere near my user space. Reddit had also reported that the controller in 2.4 mode wouldn't work without an update to xpad. Which isn't the hugest thing to get hung up over.
Needless to say after some experimentation, I can confirm you can configure profiles for 2.4 mode through the Android app without the dongle and this is a usable controller in Linux. One HUGE point to note MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE THE FIRMWARE OF THE CONTROLLER AND DONGLE BEFORE USING. It makes everything else smoother for us Penguin gamers.
Thanks yeah I’m pretty sure you can just Bluetooth it to your phone for any changes you need to make. That’s what I did with my Pro 2 I believe

Great work legend! What are your thoughts on the new nyix(sp) controller as it advertises an analog stick that works with magnets do you think that really is the answer to drift?
Same tech - likely from the same manufacturer. It’s probably the best we can get for now! Depending on build quality the controller will probably crap out before you ever start to see drift. So far I haven’t had any drift on these.

I got my pro 2 two days ago and so far I really like it. for a while I was considering getting the ultimate but I decided not to since basically for all my life I’ve mostly used PlayStation controllers and I’m coming directly from a ps4 controller. so I figured it would be fairly close to what Ive been using while still being a upgrade
Yesss I only use the Ultimate now when it comes to needing a controller but I really did enjoy the Pro 2 when I used it!

Think I am going to get the Ultimate controller. Hard to justify though since I already have 2 pro controllers and a PowerA enhanced. I want the back buttons and being lazy I just dont always charge my pro controller. The docking station is nice and well Hall sensors.

The controller is amazing I’m not a huge fan of the grips it feels scratchy on my skin but if it had rubber it would be basically the ultimate controller the triggers felt great and the joysticks feel nice
Yeah you would prefer the Nintendo Switch Pro controller for the grips - those are hard to beat! They got it right straight from the beginning as far as that goes.

I have this controller and LOL’d when you mentioned not being able to change the batteries. After using mine + switch on a 16+ hour flight, I’ll take the trade off 😂 they’re not kidding with that 22 hour rating

Hey! Great review, but 1 question I had that I could never fully find an answer for. Is there any way to quickly assign just one button, to the back "paddle" buttons, without the use of the 8bitdo Ultimate software? I know that's necessary if you want to set up macros and strings of inputs, but can I just hold down a button on the controller to quickly assign a single input to the back buttons? It seems like this isn't possible from what I've read, but just want to be sure. Thank you!

@@switchunboxing yeah, that Atomic Purple Pro 2 is so nice, I'll probably grab one of those too if they go on sale at any point. That's the only way I can justify another unnecessary controller purchase, ha
I went with the black Ultimate controller, and after about a week I love it! Everything feels crisp and premium, great rumble, I love the feel of the Hall sticks and triggers, they were a main selling point for me. And using the ultimate software via the app on my phone is actually so well integrated that I don't mind having to use it. I was impressed with how little it interferes with your gameplay to change stuff up, no need to resync controller, it just works. I'm actually changing trigger distance game to game, never thought I'd use any of those features.
Also I'm appreciating the dock more than I thought I would, it's great. I REALLY hope 8bitdo release more controllers that fit into it down the road. I'd likely become an even bigger fanboy for their stuff. Super happy with the purchase👌

The real question is do you want your controller to stop working after a year? Or would you rather have a controller that has the potential to last 20+ years. Looking at you Dreamcast.

Can you use the included dongle with other Bluetooth controllers or is it 2.4g only. Or do you have to buy the 8bitdo Bluetooth wireless adapter to use other Bluetooth controllers.
8BitDo says you’ll need the USB Wireless Adapter 2 for that and that the included dongle only works with the Ultimate controller.
Is the pro 2 a little bigger ? I bought the ultimate but I’m feeling like it’s a bit small while playing . Which is a big bummer cause the ultimate feels perfect. Or should I just go with the Nintendo pro controller cause that one feels good for hrs .
To me they're all around the same size. But as you can see, they're just different. Certain things might make a controller feel bigger or smaller depending on size and shape of your hands. Pro 2 has wider trigger and shoulder buttons than the Ultimate. The handles aren't so attached. So there might be more handle for you there. Triggers and d-pad are the same size.
I know you compared the texture of this controller's grips to the Xbox One controller, but how does it compare to the textured grips of the Xbox Series S/X controller? I'm asking because I have a sensory issue and the rough texture of the Series controller grips bothers my hands. Thank you very much!

I bought the gulikit last week and was never able to connect it to my Switch...sent it back for refund (i did update the firmware). Think i'll try the Ultimate.

Strange, everyone tells that trigger sensitivity doesn’t change for switch using ultimate software but it DOES (checked multiple times in input tester in switch settings and in games).
Oh that is really cool! They must have updated it. My bad for not checking. Since very few Switch games support the feature, the 8BitDo Pro 2 just removed it altogether for the Switch. I thought it was the same for this one too.
Have you tried the Retroflag handheld grip? I am looking for a controller with the same Thumbstick and Triggers feel for TV gameplay

They say that only the USB Wireless Adapter 2 works with the other controllers on Switch.
Great video Shibby! Interesting to hear your thoughts on it. You kinda confirmed my suspicion that the Switch Pro Controller might still be a better overall controller, but the 8bitdo comes close.
I really took for granted how solid that controller is. Same with the JoyCon. A lot more testing and meticulous design went into that than I had ever realized. I mean, other than drift.. I gotta say though - I use the Ultimate when I need a controller quite often. But I’m mostly still a JoyCon boy

Thanks for the comprehensive overview, you did a good job contrasting the controller's features which helps me decide. I think the hall effect sensors single handedly make the decision for me, my SN30 Pro 2 is on its last legs and once it dies I'm copping an ultimate for sure.

No sadly. 8BitDo doesn’t have the license from them, so the dongle doesn't work for PlayStation.

Bought the Ultimate Bluetooth and I’ll be returning it. Going to get a new Xbox Seried controller instead.
What system are using it on? Prob not a bad way to go for PC or Xbox.
I bought it and returned it immediately. Did not like the way it felt (the square/boxy shape, thr cheap plastic, and the rough handle grids).
I like the official Nintendo Pro Controller better than any controller, but I got a Gullikit Kong 2 after returning the Ultimate, and think it's pretty good.
Almost bought the Kong 2 last night! The all white one looks slick but you know me - I might have to get both lol. I might in due time but I’ve got other reviews to do. Nintendo Switch Pro controller really is such a solid controller!! They got it right the first time. Love those handles
Can you coustonmize the paddles through the Nintendo switch.
They aren’t paddles they are just buttons but no they can only be customized through the app

@@brandonwhip3481 I’m not sure as I haven’t had paddles on a controller before. Just some buttons you can program to be whichever button shortcuts you’d like. They feel good and they’re fast and convenient.

I love how 8bit do's controllers feel like an amalgam od thr best parts od Nintendo, Xbox snd PS controllers. The pro for instance clearly has the face mapping foundation and the epic snes dpad with thr lower grip snd A placement of PS where their Ultimate controllers take the snes pad again and the rest feels like a cross betwee an Xbox controller and a Pro controller but it works.
Yup can’t say it’s completely originally but they mix the best of the best really well and then make it modern. Nicely done 8BitDo!!
@@switchunboxing Yeah for sure! I've been using my Ultimate the first model for MK 1 on Switch and it works very well, sometimes I do notice I'll neutral jump just up and down instead of towards or away but I have noticed it doesn't do it often thankfully. I've seen some other reviewers of 8bit do mention this with some other controllers they make. It's good but not quite as consistent as the actual SNES controller but like you said they are pretty much imitating and not 100% original just mimicking parts of the best parts of Nintendo, Sony and Xbox controllers and combining them.
Still while they have their flaws, I would still play an 8bit do any day over say a PDP, Power A or Hori which I've owned all they all feel like cheaper plastic compared to 8bit Do, hard to describe but yeah lol. Obviously 1st party will always be the best for all consoles most of the time. I have heard the Power A I think it's them with the Fusion is a good controller but is like 100 bucks. Great video review again!

@@switchunboxing The pro 2 is good, but its technology is the same as Sony's Dual Shock 3, which was released almost 20 years ago. A Pro 3, which if it comes out I suppose it will be when they launch the switch 2, should include the technologies of the current controllers, such as haptic vibration, or triggers with force feedback, and without leaving aside its universality, construction quality, configurability and affordable price.

I refunded the 8bitdo pro 2 I had it in gray I didn’t want it anymore becaus the triggers feel so loose and the button to loud . I bought the 8bitdo ultimate in white for 50 bucks it was on sale on Amazon I was lucky ! AND woah I LOVEEE IT MUCH MORE THAN THE PRO 2!
I def enjoy the Ultimate more! I would say that’s a good decision. The little differences really help

If the switch pro controller just had the 8bitdo dpad it would be perfect for me. Idk why the hell they haven't fixed that damn dpad yet. I mean even the wii u pro controller had a proper dpad with the pivot ball to prevent multiple inputs at once, so wth happened to the switch lol. It's not as bad as like an xbox 360 dpad but wtf nintendo.
The 8BitDos dpad is more Nintendo than Nintendos.
Why does everyone refer to offset joysticks as the "Xbox look"?
I promise you, I'm not trying to be one of those people, but Nintendo was first with this.
THEY WERE NOT THE FIRST COMPANY TO CREATE A CONTROLLER WITH OFFSET JOYSTICKS, Nintendo rarely is the first to do anything when it comes to breaking technological ground with video games, they prefer to perfect already existing technology.
That being said, they WERE the first company to release a home console in which the main controller contained offset joysticks if I'm correct, that being the GameCube (yes, the C-stick is a joystick, bite me).
I guess you can argue that Microsoft maintained the same offset joystick design since day one while Nintendo has jumped around.
The N64 only had one joystick, the GameCube had offset joysticks, the Wii either had one joystick if you were using the Wiimote and Nunchuck or two PlayStation style ones if you're using the Classic Controller, to anti-PlayStation joysticks on the Wii U Pro Controller (The placement really wasn't that bad, they should do it again considering nobody uses that joystick placement), back to offset all around with the Switch.
Nintendo was also the first console to use rumble! But with the Ultimate controller they were clearly going for the Xbox look considering the bubble face buttons, no screw holes, stick layout, and the fact that the first release of it literally had the Xbox logo on it with the Xbox buttons and layout.

They were not the first ones to have built-in rumble though, I believe that was Sony.
I think both versions were released around the same time though, 8BitDo made some kind of deal with Microsoft so they could make Xbox specific controllers.
All of their Switch controllers are not officially licensed by Nintendo, but all of their Xbox controllers are licensed by Microsoft for some reason.
my 25 dollar pxn controller feels like 3 times better than my actual pro controller so idk what ur talking about when u say its hard to beat

1:02 I've been thinking for a while that the plastic for the 8BitDo Ultimate Controller looks cheap. It's a shame to hear that it feels cheap as well.
6:03 I love the 8BitDo d-pad, but I think the Hori d-pad gives it a run for its money. I've been using it quite a bit since getting the Split Pad Compact for my Switch and it just feels smooth and solid. Its very rounded edges might make it the most comfortable d-pad out there.
7:53 The angled grip on the Xbox One controller is one of my least favorite things about it. That extra width across the top on the 8BitDo Ultimate Controller looks much better for people with large hands. It's the main reason I like the 8BitDo Pro 2 so much.
I already have the Pro 2 and the SN30 Pro, so I don't feel super-compelled to get the Ultimate. That said, I definitely like the hall effect joysticks and the charging dock. It seems like a solid choice for someone who might be new to the Switch ecosystem and wants to get a Switch controller that's better in certain ways (hall effect joysticks and a superior d-pad) than the Nintendo Pro Controller.
I had to edit it out for timing and flow, but I actually ended up changing my mind about the cheap feeling, after comparing to all those controllers (kind of addressed it during Power A analysis). In a way, it feels like the best quality out of the bunch. But that title might still go to the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Those grips just have a feeling to em

Guys, dont buy this controller if you need to press and use R1 R2 allll the time, it's really small and would hurt your fingers, i use it to play Nioh 2 and man.. my finger hurts, because the Top 4 buttons is small so you need to use your top part of your finger to press it all the time.

@switchunboxing yeah, and I use back the original switch control - which honestly is one of the most comfortable controller I ever use - minus the slippery controller surface. Original switch controller top 4 buttons are wide and easy to click, which good for people with smaller hands
