    I see that some people are struggling with the bolt that goes through the alternator at the engine. I just replaced my alternator and struggled with this for a few minutes. My solution was to loosen the nut but not completely it, I then grabbed the alternator with one hand on each side and rocked it back and forth while sliding it towards the front of the car. This worked well for me.Good Luck!

    Few things:
    Loosen the mounting bracket so it can be maneuvered over towards the passenger side to make it an easy removal and install.
    You do not need to remove the lower bolt, just loosen a bit and pull out towards the front of the car.
    Make sure when you're putting the new alternator back, first get the belt back into position, push the alt down to a tense point, tighten the upper mounting bolt to finger tight, adjust tightness, then tighten the mounting bolt full. You can reach the lower mounting bolt easily with a ratchet underneath.
    No mess, no fuss. Done in an hour.
    Edit: also transfer the lower bolt to the new alternator to make it easier on yourself.

    Thanks, this worked great. The only thing that sucked was pulling the oil filter. It would have been great if I needed to do an oil change at the same time. Putting it back in was easy once I ran the lower bolt all the way through and then laid it into the channel. Worked like a champ, I'd still like to get ahold of the engineer that designed this setup and give him a piece of my mind. Whole job took about 1.5 hours because of some minor issues on my part.

  • @mattmgarza
    @mattmgarza Před 2 lety +5

    This job was a pain! Part of it is my fault because I failed to realize the lower bolt doesn't have to be removed at all, just the nut loosened enough to where you can pull it out.

  • @danjennings9129
    @danjennings9129 Před 3 lety +7

    DO NOT REMOVE OIL FILTER !!
    There’s an easier way. Just disconnect your upper radiator hose (save any coolant that may come out), disconnect power to your cooling fan. Now remove the fan shroud assembly. There is more than enough room to remove the alternator. I never had to get under the car let alone having to jack the car up. Everything can be done from the top. Just saying.
    Let me know if you find this easier than the whole oil change thing.
    I should have made the video! :)

  • @masterman393
    @masterman393 Před 3 lety +3

    You can shimmy it past the cat and oil filter with some patience. I didn’t have to take apart the water pump or filter to remove and put back the alternator just some twist and turns

  • @jg9002
    @jg9002 Před rokem +1

    No need to remove the bottom Alternator bolt. Just loosen the nut. It will pull out once top bolt,belt and wires to alternator are removed. And it can be removed from top if you disconnect radiator hose and remove fan which are easy to remove. Once it's out, THEN remove bottom alternator bolt and transfer it to the new one. Bolts are 12 mm.
    Also, Check the prices of alternators at your local parts dealer first. I called a few places and they wanted about 240 dollars, which I thought was outrageous. Went on Amazon and purchased one for 100 bucks and it arrived next day. Not sure what a shop would charge to replace an alternator, but I'm sure at least 400, so definitely worth doing yourself.

  • @Jord034
    @Jord034 Před 5 lety +4

    It's a lot easier to loosen the mounting bracket and pull the alternator straight up. It requires a little maneuvering, but it saves you some oil

      I completely disagree. I didn't notice he'd removed the filter so I loosened the bracket. Antifreeze seeped out & I struggled like crazy getting the alternator out the top way.

  • @arleatham
    @arleatham Před 3 lety +1

    Before doing anything, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
    Step 1. Jack up the passenger side car safely, remove the passenger front tire and the small fender liner that is connected with 3-10mm bolts.
    Step 2. Remove the fan by taking off 2-10 mm bolts that hold the air intake, and unclip the radiator hose from it, set aside.
    Step 3. Disconnect the electric connections from the fan and remove it by pushing in the 2 clips at the top that connect it to the radiator. You might need to disconnect the radiator hose from the radiator to lift it out, if so, drain a little coolant beforehand so you don't spill it everywhere.
    Step 4. Remove the bolts from the alternator (he does a decent job of explaining this part in the video).
    Step 5. Disconnect the electrical connections from the alternator (again, reference the video)
    Step 6. The bottom bolt in the alternator, that has a super long bolt, do like he says and tap it out with a wrench or something, and then because you took the fender liner off, you can reach down behind the wheel assembly and pull the bolt all the way out. If you do not remove the fender liner you cannot remove the bolt. He does not say this in the video, in fact, he doesn't mention how to remove that last bolt at all.
    Step 7. Pull the alternator out from the top and install new alternator, using the reverse directions of removing it.
    I hope this helps. You'll need 10 and 12 mm sockets and a lugnut wrench. You might need a pair of pliers to help with stubborn tabs on electrical connections and the clamps to remove the radiator hose if you are so inclined.

    Ughh,there's a bolt under the bottom of alternator,once you loosen, it does not need to come out,the oil filter does,the bolt that is where the slot is to loosen belt,remove,with tensioner bolt.pry upward from bolt on bottom,it is sitting in a slot,the alternator and bolt stay together,I struggled thinking the bolt was like a front break pin..once it's loose it has to be unseated by going up.Hope this helps!
