  • The first time I met Barry Cryer was on this broadcast. He thereafter became a dear friend. I feel deeply honoured to have known him. We were introduced shortly before we went on air and despite my awe, he immediately disarmed me with his warmth, kindness and of course, ready wit. We were invited on to discuss that night's t.v. premier of Martyn Hesford's play about Kenneth Williams.

David, I really enjoyed this clip with you and Barray but, I also want to mention that your portrayal of Kenneth is exceptional and I know he would be proud. Thank you for bringing him to life again for us in Fantabulosa. I am a huge fan of Kenneth and his work and so wish I had had the privilege to meet him but, then again he may have told me to 'sod off' or something, bless him. Ah, if only he had enjoyed his life and much as many of us enjoyed his life. RIP Kenny

Off topic a bit maybe, but David Benson was brilliant as Noël Coward in Goodnight Sweetheart

Kenneth Williams was an intelligent, well read, wit, ranconteur who gave joy to millions. He was one of the greatest chat show guests ever. He even hosted twice for Wogan. RIP Kenny. Your private life is of no interest now!

Sheen was good in Fantabulosa but Benson would have been better. Better still, the chap who played him in Cor Blimey. That was absolutely spot on I thought and far more fun too by the way. Sheen's portrayal was utterly miserable I thought.

With respect I think Benson far too chunky, Kennys slight frame was a big part of his character, Sheen did a fine job imo

    What an informative combination!
I remember seeing Mr. Benson's one-man show in London and it was either the final show or towards the end of the run and there were cameras filming it for posterity. However, I haven't been able to find any recording. Was it issued on a DVD or am I being obtuse? I was abroad in Slovakia for 12 years so maybe I'm out of the loop.
There's also a fascinating interview with Barry Cryer by Mark Lawson. Well worth watching.

Richard Madeley’s memory is failing him. Acid Drops wasn’t a collection of letters. It was a collection of stinging celebrity put-downs that Kenneth had heard or heard about. It’s actually rather an entertains read. A collection of his letters was published posthumously.

Back in the 1970s, I was invited to a New Year''s Eve Party - it was actors, actresses, producers and other theatrical people. Suddenly there were screams and howls from across the room. It was Kenneth Williams (I hadn't noticed that he was there). Kenneth was screaming because some young actors refused to kiss him. It would have been scandalous were it someone else, but I think that was what was expected of Kenneth - he was unstable.

do think they wrong about saying Kenneth willam's was co
meting about being gay in the the the clib. feel he was just talking about the sterio type of actors in the day. he seemed only to talk about being gay in his Diary's, and only then in a very coded way.

Michael Sheen's performance is total cobblers. He's playing KW like KW was on stage or on screen in the Carry Ons.
Offstage and without an audience he wasn't like that at all. Listen to those few personal interviews he gives without an audience.
Other than his preciseness of diction, he's really not much different from anyone else
As he himself wrote "If only they could see the sort of man I am when I'm at home alone..."

  • @rnw2739
    @rnw2739 Před rokem

Sorry but what are these people watching when they say Sheen is superb.....he is TERRIBLE. A complete caricature and so forced it is ludicrous. I concede that Sheen is brilliant at doing Tony Blair but he was utterly embarrassing trying to play Kenneth.
Adam Godley should have been given the role. He is amazing as Kenneth. A remarkable performance as he is very tall and looks nothing like Kenneth but he gets Williams' voice spot on.... so spot on I believed it was Kenneth after a while watching 'Cor! Blimey'.
Sheen doing that blatantly fake laugh is utterly pathetic and painful to watch.

Kenneth Williams was the ultimate proof that no one cared if you were bent, if you were funny, and he and Paddick were hysterical. Now sadly totally unfunny self professed 'gay comics' are succeeding just because they are bent.
