  • In 2023 I will be taking up a more minimalistic lifestyle. This is part 1 of my decluttering series where I dive straight into decluttering my wardrobe. We look into my closet, dresser, and random boxes of clothes I own as well as clean and organize them back into their respective areas.

    Please don't take this comment personally, I just wanted to share my observations and a tip that helps me. As I watched you declutter it seems like your clothes still own you. It's very hard, I know. Especially when there's mountains of clothes surrounding you. You acknowledged that you only wear the same things and mentioned how little of your pants you wear, but you kept most of it. It happens a lot. People know they only wear 3-6 outfits, but they still hold on to stuff just in case or they say they will wear it now that they 'found it'. For me I believe if I don't like wearing it, or kinda push it to the side in my closet, I know I don't love it and I don't like holding onto that "fantasy self" as I've heard lol. I know you got rid of several bags. That must've been a massive load off your shoulders. But after this you may start to realize that things you still have aren't things you reach for. The first declutter often brings new insights on what is actually beneficial to us so we can make our spaces not seem stuffed but breathable 🥰

      I really appreciate your comment because I completely agree with you. I recorded this a little bit ago and looking at my closet now I know i need to get rid of more because you’re right I am still somewhat holding onto a “fantasy self” and it’s really difficult to break that barrier. This first time decluttering was a huge weight off my shoulders but man do i still have so much that i still don’t wear! But i am looking for others who can share some tips and help me do better in upcoming declutters too so I truly appreciate this a lot🤍 if you have any suggestions of what i can do in the future I would love your input :)

    I own about 70 pieces of clothing in total including pajamas, socks, underwear, etc and I still think it's too much lol. I agree with another commenter that you did keep a lot, BUT you also did an AMAZING job! As you said, minimalism is about the journey, not the destination, so I recommend coming back to your clothes once you're ready to continue decluttering, until you get to the point where you feel that you wear every single article of clothing in your wardrobe.

    I just watched your video again and wanted to offer encouragement. You did a great job at a first pass. I spent 2 years decluttering my place. For me it was done in layers. I'd go through a category and think it was fine, but then a month or so later I'd realize there was still too much and declutter again. I'm still letting go of things but not in large quantities at this point. And it'll get easier. Some of those clothes that you still feel attached to will at some point feel like excess and you'll let them go. Be gentle with yourself. Letting go is hard and you don't want to force yourself to do it before being ready. =)

    You did an amazing job! Here’s an idea that could help with the attachment you have to some of the clothes you’re unsure about: put them in a container/bag and store them somewhere out of sight (like under the bed) for a set amount of time. Maybe until the move, but it could be after if that feels like too little. If by that time you haven’t thought about wearing them and haven’t gone back to take them out, you can be certain that you don’t use them and you’d have also gotten used to having them out of your closet so it won’t feel quite so jarring. Hopefully this trick helps! But I loved how patient you’re being with yourself - that’s definitely the right attitude 💕

    Oh honey I’m still trying to figure it all out & I’m damn-near 40. What changed my brain for good was having children. My literal brain chemistry changed & that’s the only thing that I can credit with my current ability to declutter… there’s never a finishing line though. Get into this knowing that it’s an ongoing lifestyle change. My NEW goal (along with continuing my journey toward minimalism) is slow living! Can’t wait to see what my & your future holds. Keep it up girl. This community is good for encouragement & accountability! EDIT: holy crap! Jon Bellion was my audio student at FTC. 😄 weird. He’s a great person & I’m totally subscribing now lol. I'm enjoying the video so far - I just want to share something I've heard other people talk about when decluttering (Christina Mychas I believe, her videos are great and I recommend them!) and that is to Donate with Dignity, so donate things that are actually worth donating and in good condition. Usually places get too many things donated anyway that a LOT of it ends up in landfills in Africa. Maybe you meant give away to people you know, but if you mean donate to places then I just wanted to bring it up. Learning that the things we donate may end up in landfills anyway has made me a lot more conscious of what I do with clothes I want to declutter.

    • @kxr1725
      @kxr1725 Před rokem

      Also!! when I struggle to declutter sentimental clothes - like your red dress - I take pictures of them. That way, I can declutter the thing, but I get to keep something that sparks my memory, but the thing itself no longer takes physical space in my life. I learned this from The Minimalists (they're on youtube), and usually what we value is the memory, not so much the item itself. You have to evaluate if the thing that triggers the memory is worth the space it's taking up. To be fair, I do keep some sentimental pieces but have been able to declutter other ones using this method :)

      these are some awesome tips, thank you so much!🤍 I have been getting friends and family to look through my things and take what they want, but I am definitely cautious about where I want to donate the rest. it's so sad that so much just ends up going to waste :( and I know sentimental things are so hard to get rid of! I may try the picture method though, thanks again!!

    This has helped me the most since I started getting anxiety about having too much stuff. Declutter often, perhaps every 3-4 months until you get to where you want then narrow that down to 2 times a year. I’m responsible for 5 people in my house, myself and my 4 children concerning purging clothes that don’t fit or don’t wear. Work in small portions like this drawer take a break then do another so that you don’t get overwhelmed all at once. If you don’t love it, it doesn’t fit, or has stains then get rid of it. Sentimental will always stop you from letting something go. Ask yourself, would you buy it from a store? If the answer is no then let it go.

    Wow! I can't believe you did the KonMari method. You are so brave! I could never do that as the pile would still be on my bed a month later due to the overwhelm. I look at my jeans and imagine how many I need. Let's say I want to keep 5 pair because that is how many will fit easily (easy to get to and easy to put away) in the space I have designated. Then I pick my 5 favorites. I do this with each category. So instead of taking each item and having to decide if I like it, etc., I just pick my favorites and let someone else have the rest. Good luck as you continue. You did an amazing job!

As for decluttering your clothes even more my sugguestion would be re-going thru your clothes but by section like you said you did in the past. Drawers, closet,etc. This will help you pair things down even more. Also learning its okay to have space aka drawers not totally full. This was something that took me a long time to learn.

  • @Xiallaci
    @Xiallaci Před rokem +1

    When I started I wasnt ready to get rid of many things either. So what I did was that I created a "keep" pile, limiting myself to around 15 items and a "maybe" pile. the maybe pile went out of the closet under my bed (you could put it anywhere really where its out of sight, just not inside the closet). I kept the maybe-pile around a year and only went back once bc I actually got rid of too many sweaters and needed 1 extra.
    I liked the safety of knowing I could go back to those items and knowing I wasnt actually "parting" with them, just "putting them away nicely". During the next year I found that I really didnt miss anything, because I was enjoying the simplicity of my new closet and was like "meh I just cant be bothered anymore" - but truthfully I also refrained from looking through them again and just recycled them since I fear to fall back into old patterns.
    So in essence my tip would be: make an experiment out of it like "living 1 month with a 10-20 item capsule closet" and see how it goes.

    • @angelenecs
      @angelenecs  Před rokem +2

    Wow! Good job on decluttering half your wardrobe! If I may offer a few tips to help keeping your remaining clothes in good shape : dress pants/trousers and dresses would be more likely to keep their shape and prevent wrinkles if they were hung. Knitwear would better keep their shape especially in the shoulders if folded in drawers or on shelves.

    Way to fight through the overwhelm! You made really great progress and cut down your wardrobe by 50% which is a huge accomplishment ❤ As you said you don't really know what your style is. As you start to notice what you wear and what you don't and pay attention to why you don't wear things, you'll figure out your style & you'll easily be able to get rid of what's not you. Also, decluttering is only half the equation the jey is not bringing in more unless you know for sure it will add value. Decluttering is a continuous process and oor styles & bodies change but if you really put intention behind the things you bring into your space you'll easily be able to get ride of things don't work & prevent clutter from taking over. Looking forward to seeing more of your journey 🙌

So, a couple of things that helped me when i was decluttering and planning a big move i asked myself "do i use this enough to want to move it?" I’ve been struggling with figuring out what to let go of and what to keep as well especially since I’m also trying to find my style and rediscover what it is I actually enjoy wearing. One of the things I’ve noticed that helps a lot is trying them on albeit it being extremely time consuming. If it doesn’t make me feel good or if there’s anything I don’t like about the article of clothing that I can’t alter, I’ll part ways with it. A lot of people don’t like going through the process because it’s time consuming, but watching you go through your closet gives me a lot of motivation to go through mine too!

    You go girl! A massive successful first time declutter. As someone that's been through multiple rounds, I think you've got the right mindset -I enjoyed your vid more than many others, who focus on tossing /selling but not learning anything about themselves.
    One piece of advice is to reflect and assess yourself as you move through your journey. What you're letting go of and why is very enlightening.
    What also helped me with clothing and buy decisions was working out my personal style. Makes it sooo much easier. There's heaps online about this, I went with the 3 word method to describe my style. It makes outfits easier to put together, as everything in your wardrobe goes together in a way. You seem to prefer neutrals and comfortable from what you mentioned.
    Wishing you well on your journey to achieving your minimalist values, whatever that looks like for you ❤

    I am in the process of downsizing myself. I have been on this journey for more than 3 years. I moved from a 1950 sq ft house to a 980 sq ft apartment to a 580 sq ft apartment. I have had to down size in every area. I commend your progress. Every time you declutter you will be able to let go of more. Here are some tips that I have learned from others that have helped me. Counting items in each category definitely helps to see the overwhelming numbers. See if you can set a goal for each category. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t reach the exact number but aim to get closer each declutter. Declutter every season, and take out of your closet what you are not wearing that season. Turn all your hangers backwards. Turn them forward when you wear an item. You will see at the end of the season what you did not wear. I try to force myself to wear those items that I haven’t worn at the end of the season. I try to figure out why I haven’t worn it. I ask myself a few questions. Does it fit? Does it look good on me? Do I have things to wear with it? Does it reflect my current style? My lifestyle? Take notes about what you do or don’t like. Notice trends so you don’t make the same purchase mistakes in the future. Figure out what colors and styles you do look good in and work with other items you love. For the things you like but never wear, let them go. Someone else said “if it is not a hell yes, then it’s a no”. That helped me with my maybes. Sell them or give them to friends who they might be a hell yes for. Good luck with your intentional buying. It will get easier. Keep up the good work!

However, I have followed “ The Mnimal Mom “ & “ Dana K White “ for a long time & with a mix of the two styles I have succeeded. Should have done it years ago, life is so much easier now that my home is simplified.

My two methods that helped me so much 1) i hung everything in my closet by colors - made a huge difference when i looked and saw 5 gray t shirts hanging together of which i only wore one every now and then, and 2) shopping my own clothes. I didn’t look through my closet for things to give away. Instead i looked through and basically shopped. I only pulled OUT the things i love and would buy today full price. Sometimes I think I don’t have anything left to declutter but still find things weekly 🙈 so the journey continues and never stops . But I love that, I love decluttering because it gives me peace. I have a 1 year old daughter so that makes decluttering even more important and necessary😅👍🏼

    To me, minimalism is a (neverending) journey.
    It is just like you said. There is not a one-size-fits-all type of deal but in my experience, minimalism is a process.
    When I started with the clothes (I did not have as much as you) but I got rid of many things. After you do that once, you kinda get the hang of it and start trusting yourself and the process more. And the second time you realize that you kept many things that you do not really wear but they were sort of sentimental or you thought that you would wear and you are ready to let go. And you continue to do that as you go.

    Some things take doing them in small steps...its still steps to get where you want to be...I know.
    Honestly for me, covid and that almost 3 years of staying at home changed how alot of people have found themselves changed. It happened to me and others I know. We now look and see the process we were all in and now we are reevaluating whats important and ourselves...and yes, that means rethinking the world around you, in your space.
    I think you did a wonderful job. You Go!

    You did great! One tip you might consider is to hang your hangers backward and as you wear the clothes turn them around the right way. This will show you after a given amount of time what you wear and what you do not. It helps to further thin thigs out. =)

    you did a very good job. I don't have half the cloths you kept but every step in the right direction is nice :-) it took me many months to get rid of my belongings. sometimes it is just not the right time to throw your stuff away.
    An advice: when you get rid of cloths and belongings, get also rid of storage space. most of the people tend to buy new stuff just because they have space after decluttering. I know its pretty tempting but just don't do it xD

    someone may have said this already, but one cool tip i came across was: hang your clothes with the hangers facing backwards, and give away any clothes that you havent touched after a year has passed. it makes it super easy to tell which clothes you havent touched
    another cool tip is: for every 1 new piece of clothing you buy or put into your closet, give away 1 old piece of clothing. it doesnt have to be that strict, maybe for every 3 new things, you give away 1 old thing. but that helps you keep track of things, too
    also, youre allowed to own lots of things. you dont have to have a capsule wardrobe unless that's what actually works for you and brings you joy.

    Always imagine all the cloths I don’t want in the landfill and it breaks my heart ❤️. I try to sale, but let’s face it the cloths we donate 90% goes to landfill. Where do you donate?

    • @angelenecs
      @angelenecs  Před rokem

      Hi !! And i totally agree it’s so sad to know a lot of our donations go to landfills :( for me, i tried exhausting every other option first meaning I went to my family members and let them go through my stuff if they wanted anything, then friends, and even coworkers. I would say if those don’t move a lot you could try a yard sale or selling online! Or donating to a thrift store. I personally donated to the salvation army because my family and i just have always donated there. I also have family back in the Philippines so i try to keep them in mind if i could ship any to them as well. Good luck on your journey💕
