  • Finally built a custom box for my subwoofer! The box has a volume of 2.7 cubic feed and is tuned to 32 hrz. However, I utilized the adjustable port by Sky High Car Audio so it could be tuned higher if needed.

I have critically listened and compared different kinds of enclosure ports. Shape is very important. In my honest opinion round arrow ports sound the best. Something crazy that ive heard was making the port before it starts to flare. The same diameter as the cone on your subwoofer. This trick works well on really long ports. That's why its commonly used in transmission line's.

Would be interesting to see a video on port shape. But with actual accurate engineered measurements. I cannot hear a difference between them. As long as the box and the port are designed correctly, it’s just air moving exactly the same and I don’t hear a difference.

I used tite bond 3 and clamps on my last couple of boxes Emf audio banhammer 15 in 5 cubes tuned to 26 hz and has held up fine for over 6 months now. Was a little worried at first that it might come apart. But no problems thus far. Used to do liquid nails and screws, but just gluing looks so much better. The amount of pressure in the car at 18-30 hz, I can only imagine the pressure in the box, not to mention the amount of force on the baffle hanging a 60 pound subwoofer on it at full throw. 35mm linear xmax so just under 3 inches of throw linear.

“ive worked with aeros on several occasions, and have always found it useful to reinforce them due to how flimsy they are. it always seems to play louder, and produces cleaner sound. my preferred method for reinforcing them is to assemble them without any adhesives, and heavily sandblast the outsides with a very rough blast media. after that, i install in the enclosure and connect the joints with pvc glue after scuffing the bonding surfaces, and then once installed i like to fiberglass the outsides of the tube and flares with a heavy layer of chopmat. this seems to make the ports VERY strong, and they absolutely will not flex after this.
any of you other guys do this? i got the idea from alan dante back when we were hangin' out at world finals '06 and it really makes a difference in my experience.”

The HVAC tape has weight and an elastic adhesive. This changes the resonance of the box itself. At certain frequencies and volumes boxes start to become less efficient due panel deflections. Each panel has a resonance frequency, so adding weight will lower the resonance frequency each panel. The adhesive, being rubbery, will dampen some of the unwanted harmonics that can have a canceling effect at cerain frequencies. Think of the tape as "Dynomat" for a box. "Dynomat" helps reduce resonances in you car's body panel and thereby increases Db on the meter. Why? because you car's cabin is a box. Same thing with HVAC tape in your box. The less your enclosure flexes, the more efficient it becomes.

SUGGESTION 4 A VIDEO: How to add a new baffle onto an existing box without dismantling anything! WHY?: For those who have stripped all of their subs screw holes, for those who need more box flexing support, for those needing deeper baffles for longer sub mounting screws, for those switching from square subs to round subs or vice versa, for those wanting to change the look of the front of their box/enclosure, and so on. I know I'm needing to do this because T-Nuts chewed up my MDF and so I'd like to add a 1/2" piece of PVC/ABS and install Threaded Inserts into the new baffle while sandwhiching the threaded inserts in between the old and new baffles. But you could use a 3/4" or 1" new baffle made out of quality wood and teach us how to effectively attach the new baffle to the old baffle while painting it to match your vehicle's interior or something interesting/helpful like that.

Just subbed to your channel. You did a nice job on this box. When I'm building a custom box there's a couple of things I do differently, it takes a little longer but it's worth it in the end for a perfect box. After I get all of the boards cut I fully assemble the box with just screws first to make sure all measurements were precise. That way if there was a mistake somewhere it's not a nightmare to disassemble it because of glue/caulk. The other thing I do is when cutting the vent or port holes I use a router. It looks much cleaner and certain ports install much tighter because of the curvature. Something a little extra to do is use a router to go down about 1/8" to recess the sub in a little.

He’s designs dozens of large builds and says while that holds true for a slot port it doesn’t for an aero port.
If you think about it a slot port is only open on one side while an aero port is open 360 degrees so a lot more air can move out of it than in a slow port with the same distance

That box looks and sounds absolutely awesome! Just wondering, why would you want to make the tuning frequency higher? Ive had a terrible experience with a prefab enclosure that was tuned too high and don't know why anyone would want to tune it high.

I don’t really want to but is an option. For example some subs just don’t perform well at 32 hz. Also, if I was going for purely SPL tuning it higher would probably help

Try it with just screws and see what happens, I didn't buy it myself till I tried myself. It's nuts how strong plain ole wood glue is on mdf. The more surface area you have the stronger it locks together. the bonded joint if done right is to be stronger than the parent wood. 🤔

If I can I refuse to use screws in the baffle board and specially if I'm using a exotic wood facing .
