  • Mutations that accumulate as one ages contribute to various neurological disorders.
Many people grew up learning that every cell in the human body has the same DNA. Contrary to this, humans are genetic mosaics, where individual cells throughout the body, including the brain, can have different genomes.
The brain begins to accumulate new mutations starting from birth, where changes occur randomly in different brain cells. As an individual ages, the number of somatic mutations increases substantially, contributing to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.
