  • Peter Thorne goals - 1997/98 season
A modern day cult hero amongst Stoke supporters. Thorne started his career in the early nineties at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Swindon Town in 1995. He bagged 32 goals in 91 appearances during three seasons at the County Ground, also helping them win the Second Division title in 1996. He joined Stoke in the summer of 1997 as a direct replacement for top scorer Mike Sheron who'd just been sold to Queens Park Rangers. Thorne couldn't prevent our relegation to the Second Division in his first season although he did score 14 goals. He netted another 11 (1998/99) before bursting into life in the second half of the 1999/00 season, scoring 30 goals (the first Stoke player to do so since Mark Stein in 1992/93). Along the way he scored the winning goal in the 2000 Autowindscreen Shield final. Injury delayed his start to the 2000/01 season athough he returned to score 16 times as Stoke missed out on promotion via the play-offs. Early in the 2001/02 season he was sold to Cardiff City for £1.7 million, much to the heartbreak of supporters. He remained a regular goalscorer at Ninian Park (51 goals) and Bradford City (32 goals) before retiring in 2010.

Hi bud, been watching your videos the last couple of days. Where did you manage to get this footage of the 97-98 season from?

Mostly from some very old home made VHS recordings from 15/20 years ago. There was never any official release of the season as far as I'm aware (likewise 1996/97)

DrawForMeTheBoothen Yeah I think the regular season reviews started the following season...I've got them all going back that far. I know it was a season most would happily forget but not seen any of the goals from the relegation season since they happened. Thanks for uploading!
