Are Large ADV Bikes Fit For Purpose? Your Opinion? | Almost A Motorcycle Podcast - Ep#4

  • Today’s podcast is my take on what large capacity ADV bikes are good at, and what, in my opinion, an average rider shouldn’t expect them to do. While most moto journos were lavishing praise on the latest BMW R1300GS model, I couldn’t help thinking: large ADV bikes - what’s the purpose of them? What do you use your KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, Suzuki Vstrom 1050DE or BMW R1250GS Adventure for?

I sold my Africa Twin and bought a touring bike and then a dual-sport. Touring on a big adventure bike would be fine, but you have to be an expert rider to take them off-road. I can ride my touring bike to campgrounds, so an unpaved road is not an obstacle.

Self evident for some of us. I need to get my old CT90 going. Slow but steady but goes anywhere and light as a feather.

My Super Tenere is a phenomenal touring machine. Would i consider thrashing it offroad, at my age (64) , hell no!!
We don't bounce any more ,,, we break when we splatter....
    And hopefully recover.....🤷‍♂️

There’s something to be said for lesser bikes that can deliver big adventures. It’s completely missed by the “grass is always greener” mindset. After running through a gamut of larger motorcycles, I’ve found that I’m happiest on my DR650. That said, your vstrom 1000 video is still one of my favorite motorcycle reviews. I’d love to eventually pair one with my DR one day.

I love large ADV bikes. They are comfortable for touring, good around town, have plenty of power, and are plenty fast. I don't take mine off road, but plenty of people do. People love to make fun of large adv bikes, but one of the few advantages of getting old is you don't really care what other people think. Get what you like.

Totally agree with what you're saying here. My NC750X gives me all the adventure I need on pavement and graded gravel roads.

Now there's an under-appreciated bike. More functional, cheaper, and better looking than a R1300GS, but doesn't get 1% of the reviews or media attention. Cheers.

Large adventure bikes? depends where you live, us living in BC they make sense, amazing on road and off-road all over here, from easy to difficult offroad… ride amazing on road and go explore endless easier offroad trails…

Maybe given x number of riders then the more expensive the bikes they buy the more money the manufacturers and dealers make.

I- of 66 years of age- and ((mostly)sound mind and body will not take my liter adv bike on any dirt I wouldn't take a 2wd pick up on. Why did I want one? There were dirt roads I wanted to ride that were too scary on my tupperware-tubby 99 BMW 1100 sport tourer. And I wanted to see the moving parts of the bike. Just like most adventure kitted 4x4 suv's/raptors get the same treatment. And I AM OK WITH THAT. I would have a smaller bike if I still wanted to ride off road only if the riding area was near by. I like to go 750 miles from home a few times a year now by m/c-and stay gone for a week. I pride myself knowing my used $3,500 14 VStrom will do what I want as well a that $30,000 new BMW will. BTW your reviews were part responsible for my recent upgrade form my 04 VStrom 1000. It was so satisfying to harvest my soft bags etc from the 04 to go on the 14. P.S. I grew up riding dirt bikes- so I identify more as an adventure rider than a street rider.

That's a good way to think about it (2wd pick up bechmark for ADV bikes.) Cheers.

Totally agree but don’t agree that the rider we’re watching isn’t wearing gloves. Must have been lesson one with my Mom, don’t ride your bike unless your wearing protective gloves 🧤

In my opinion the GS is not a true adv bike for the reasons you mention plus the fact that BMW is doing it's best to make it unserviceable except by a dealership by eliminating service manuals. Adventures are to be limited to towing distance to a dealership!

Have a friend who rode his DL650 from BC to Tierra Del Fuego in the company of BMW R1200GS riders. The weestrom was bulletproof, needed nothing but tires. The BMs needed services in Colombia and had issues the entire route.

Just did a 5200 km tour in NZ. Out of seven R1250s three had issues.
