  • I asked Emily, my 7 year old, to do all the work on producing a video. She and her younger sister don't seam to appreciated how much work goes into editing, story writing, special effects, music etc etc once filming is complete.
So the instructions where clear. Think of a very short story with a dialog. Emily wrote a script (based on a previous video we have done but that's ok). We talked about some possible story variations but most of it was as she had written it. We started principal photography in the lounge with some blankets and tows providing backdrop.
Emily fed me and Amy the lines and operated the camera. Some direction was needed for framing but that went fine.
It was difficult to decide if I should let Emily loose on Final Cut Pro or give her the more simple iMovie. After a few minutes of fiddling in iMovie I thought it best to teach her something I was comfortable with. After all Final Cut isn't very unapproachable anyway.
I thought her the concepts of the timeline and I for in the video and O for out the video and E to extend the timeline. How to cut out bloopers and parts she didn't want. I found it useful to show her the audio peaks as a visual reference of when dialog starts and stops for edit points. I called them Mountains.
98% of the editing was done by Emily with my assistance. She even did the special effects and chose the music etc.
Very proud of her and at how well the video came out.
    Enjoy!
