Without filling the new filter, or priming it, you can just stick a tube on the middle connector and suck on it a few times to pull the fuel through. I was lazy and went this route, and in a surprisingly short time I had fuel coming up the tube.
You may her some gurgling, and feel the pressure change a few times, and after about 5-6 hefty sucks you should be good to go.

The Alternator is under the filter so be careful not to spill diesel on it ,,

Fantastic! Thank you. A mechanic once advised filling the filter with engine oil to help lubrication. Is that just a tale or is it good?

It's not clear what you're doing when you prime the system. Which pipes are connected to the manual pump?

Why is the filter holder loose? It's the same on mine and seems that the holder should be fixed under a ring on the bulkhead section. Strange! If you fill up the filter beforehand with fuel using the bottom of the filter there should be no need to prime the pipes afterwards. True??

Yes you are right the filter should be secured but It looks like the wiring harness doesn’t allow the filter to go in the right position.
I didn’t fill up the filter because I wanted to show what happened if you don’t do it.
Definitely best option is to fill up the filter using a syringe or a pump.
