9 Day Offshore Sail From Neah Bay, WA To San Francisco, CA -On our 30ft Sailboat

- This is the story of our offshore passage from Neah Bay, Wa to San Francisco, Ca. Sailing down this section of the U.S. coast for many global circumnavigators is the roughest passage of their entire voyage. We knew it was not to be taken lightly, and had been preparing ourselves, and Spy for this for many years, but this was still our first multi-day passage! It took 9 days, including two and a half days caught in a gale off Mendocino Point.

Glad to just now come across you video to see another perspective of the gales off Cape Mendocino! Looks like your employed some great strategies to help keep things safe and as comfortable as possible given the conditions.
We shared some similar experiences during our respective passages to SF, but a year apart! We had 3 days straight of 30-45 kts about 150 miles off of southern Oregon until we were within 70 miles of Drakes Bay, at which point things finally eased off. When we left Neah Bay, the forecast models showed we should experiences some 30 kt gusts on our approach to SF/Drakes Bay, but things changed. A LOT! Instead of the usual Mendocino gale staying within its typical 100 mile radius off the cape, it expanded out to 300 miles. There was nothing we could do but ride it out. If you're still in the Gulf of California come this fall, give us a holla. We're hauled out in San Carlos until November.

Well go figure we bought a bare hull from Rawson boat works spent 79 through 86 building. Flush deck stern hung rudder on a large skeg for a hybrid self steering system. Autohelm 2000 mounted on the tiller to a tab tiller pushing an aileron on the back of the rudder.

About 10 to 15 years ago, a singe handed sailor was sailing a 30-40 foot sailboat from Hawaii to San Francisco when he got caught in high winds, got exhausted, called the Coast Guard, and intentionally sank his boat to keep it out of traffic and was rescued.
That's a sad tale. That would be a very hard call to make. We are very lucky to have each other offshore. Thanks for watching, and commenting!

that's a great achievement! enjoy the narration over footage as opposed to always talking into the camera.
two bits of advise...1. dramamine! works wonders...keeps spirits up by keeping sea sickness at bay. doesn't make you any more tired than the normal stress of sailing...and much more effective to feel whole and a little sleepy, than stressed and sea sick.
2. they call it the 'mainsail' for a reason...first sail up, last sail down. made your trip much more uncomfortable under jib alone. better to ride under reefed main alone.
in those conditions, a double reefed main, and small headsail sheeted flat to help the bow stay off the wind...in the gale, a trysail would have done the trick.
also, your boat should not be overly prone to broaching, so you can maintain much more speed, and enjoy the surfing.
on my 1962 spaulding 33, i had 15-20 foot seas and 25 knots of steady wind from behind off the baja coast...we sailed at 7 knots in the troughs, and surfed at 10-12 knots all day on each successive wave. i had the full mainsail broad to port, and the boat felt steady as a rock.

While all boats sail differently, Spy and other Rawson 30's are notorious for excessive weather helm. In our experience, flying the main or trysail down wind in heavy conditions on Spy is certainly asking for heavy work on the tiller, and a possible broach.
Sounds like some awesome sailing you had off of Baja!

Thanks!! We were 120 off when the blow started, and 170 off by the end. The forecast looked like the gale would stay near the shore, but that was clearly inaccurate…
This looks to have been one of the storms that Garrett and Ruth rode out in harbour.
Possibly in an older video. The one in their recent video on the Baja peninsula was much larger. It built so fast and was so big they called it a bomb cyclone. Fortunately for Ruth and Garret, is was hundred of miles north, and they were only hit by the large seas it pushed down the coast. Thankfully ours was not a cyclone, just a another gale on the Oregon/California coast.

Awesome! I recently bought a 1963 rawson 30 that has been converted to junk rig. Curious, why did you remove 300 lb of the concrete ballast from under the v berth? Loved this video by the way!
@@codyking2761 Cool! Thanks for watching. We love our Rawson! Spy was always bow heavy. She came with a seized engine. We put in a new one that's 200 lbs lighter. To balance her out we carried 300 lbs of sand bags in the stern locker, for years. Also our anchor locker was set up to drain under the V berth with no outlet to the bilge. We would mop up the water, but it was always wet. Water had got between the fiberglass and concrete. Lots of mold issues! Finally got fed up with the whole mess and used a rotary hammer to pull it out. Really glad we did! No more bow heavy issues, and it turned out the concrete was not locked in place in any way. In the event of a roll over it would have come smashing through the V berth! Upside down in the middle of the ocean with a 300 pound wrecking ball inside the boat!🤠 Miley Cyrus playing in the background of course..
